Bali surf report - Monday January 31st 2011

Surfing conditions today for Airports, Kuta, Legian, Seminyak and Canggu are roughly the same, with wave heights at around 5.5ft with an interval of 12 seconds. Winds of 3mph out of the SW are the go today.

Travel safe in Bali - Travel insurance from Worldnomads.com

This follows choppy conditions yesterday at Canggu even though there was decent wave height. Over the next 7 days Bali will be hit by strong winds spoiling the surf action a bit. Directly following that, starting around Monday Feb 2nd, Uluwatu is expected to have surf from 4-5ft, with intervals from 12-15 seconds, winds from 4-9mph.

To sum things up for you. Its goolache of choppy, windy, small surf interupted by some ok intervals. Here's more from MagicSeaweed.

Indonesia struggling with pornography issue

The 21st century and communication technology mean access to all kinds of information is easy for almost everyone. Balinese farmers who formerly would be ploughing fields and learning gamelan can now contact and chat with models in Jakarta on their smart phone. High school kids in Jakarta have access to all kinds of adults information,as do kids and adults all over Indonesia who visit internet cafes. For a largely Muslim country, and especially one that run by anal-retentive little men who are scared of everything from the outside world, this presents a huge problem.

Travel safe in Bali - Travel insurance from Worldnomads.com

Indonesia has been working with ISP's to block pornography (a very difficult task unless you have a team of people online 24/7 checking every site accessed by everybody) and also working with Blackberry to block adult content.

One of the highest profile cases of anti-pornography is the prosecution / persecution of Ariel 'Peterporn' (Nazriel Irham) who did the unforgiveable when he video taped himself with his girlfriend. For this unpardonable sin Ariel is faced with a 5 year prison sentence and Rp 250 million fine.

The funny side of all this is that a lot of Indonesians are big fans of pornography. Just visit a local internet cafe and watch people pointing anf giggling. Same with the widespread availability of DVDs. The way the govenment is trying to criminalize person behaviour smacks of fear of their part and a failure to understand modern life and also how processes work.

Ariel Peterporn's verdict will be on Tuesday February 1st 2011.

Bali flights latest - 13 flights from Bali canceled, Bromo ash

From the Jakarta Post

At least 13 international flights scheduled to arrive and depart from Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar, Bali, have been canceled after volcanic ash from Mount Bromo infiltrated Denpasar's airspace Friday.

Travel safe in Bali - Travel insurance from Worldnomads.com

"Operators have ordered the cancellation of flights to and from Denpasar in accordance with the warning issued by Darwin's Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre [VACC]," stated Bambang Supriadi Ervan, the chief spokesman of the Transportation Ministry.

"The Transportation Ministry  also issued a similar warning on Mt. Bromo's ash clouds. We also have published a flight hazard zone map that shows which routes are safe for aircrafts to fly through", Bambang added.

Carriers that have ordered flight cancellations include Cathay Pacific, Jetstar Australia, Valuair, and Virgin Blue. Cathay has suspended their Hong Kong-Denpasar flights, and Valuair has suspended their Singapore-Denpasar.

Cathay Pacific flights bound for Hong Kong and Valuair flights bound for Singapore have also been canceled. Jetstar Australia followed suit and has temporarily suspended flights originating and bound for Denpasar from major Australian cities, which includes Darwin, Melbourne, Sydney and Perth.

Bambang added, "The Transportation Ministry actually has no authority to order flight cancellations. The decision ultimately rests on the judgment of each airlines concerned based on information provided through our flight hazard zone maps and warnings issued by international authorities, in this case, the VACC."

What the F**K !!!! - Why are there so many accidents in Indonesia?

Jesus H Christ on a popsickle stick, why are there so many accidents in Indonesia? Do people walk around with their eyes shut? Don't Indonesians understand proceedures? Do people just not use their head in matters of importance in this country?

The answer is YES, YES, YES. People do walk around and drive around with their head in the clouds, proceedures are usually not adhered to and their brains are up their ass. Sounds harsh? Its a fact. After witnessing a local man and a local woman collide with each other at a local Bali intersection (he making a right turn from the left lane, she making a left turn from the right lane), getting up and looking at each other like 'where did you come from?' this writer can believe its all possible in Indonesia.

Ferries catchnig fire, trains crashing...not surprising when you witness the lack of process in most businesses, with staff 'out to lunch' on most issues. Once in a while you'll come across a competant local in Bali, and they stand out like a light, a star in a sea of twilight.

So anyway, commiserations to the families of the people killed today in the ferry and train crashes in Indonesia. Someone was accountable, but that someone just didn't seem to care.

Bali flights are back on track after Bromo erupts

Bali flights are back on track after Mt. Bromo erupts. The East Java landmark erupted on Thursday decorating the sky with grey and brown ash. Most airlines halted service to Bali several hours, including Qantas and JetBlue.

The halt in service was only temporary and Australians planning on coming to Bali need not be concerned. it is interesting that a couple of years after a major earthquaake in Indonesia, volcanic eruptions have started happening. Anak Krakatoa located between Sumatra and Java came to life recently, as did the always active Merapi in Central Java. Bromo has started to stir and its possible that Mt. Batur in Bali might show some life in the near future.

Indonesian ferry on fire - many dead

An Indonesian ferry sailing between Java and Sumatra caught fire killing 11 people and injuring 200. The incident happened at 3am when the Sumatra bound ferry was just 40 minutes into its voyage.

Indonesia is the world's largest archipelago and thus relies on ferries to transport people and goods around the country. Ferries tend to be old, poorly maintained and severly overloaded. Today's accident was likely the result of a tossed cigarette, which once again prives smoking can kill.

Say no to drugs in Bali

One aspect of Bali tourism that has not chaged over the years is locals setting up tourists for drug busts. Back in the early 90's this was rife in places such as Lovina, whereby a local would offer marijuana and the unsuspecting buyer would be arrested 100 meters down the street. Not much has changed.
The idea that Indonesia is tough on drugs is only partly accurate. Indonesia is tough on foreigners who import, export or wh oare caught with drugs. In fact if you fall into any one of these categories you'll probably have to sell your house to be able to buy your way out of a long prison sentence. Other than that Indonesia is not tough on drugs at all, with touts on major streets in Kuta / Seminyak freely offering drugs to every passerby. Strangely these characters never seem to get busted.

The latest 'fly' to get caught is a 31 year old German tourist named Andreas Wolfgang Binder who ws caught in the Poppies I area after purchasing 1.26 gm of marijuana from an unknown source. Let's hope Andrea's parents have $40,000 handy.
