Scar Reef Shows Up as Quarterfinalists Decided on Day 3 of O'Neill Freak of the Reef Challenge in West Sumbawa
30 June 2012, Jelenga Beach, West Sumbawa: Quarterfinalists were decided today on Day 3 of the O'Neill Freak of the Reef Challenge at West Sumbawa, after a morning of non-stop action at Yoyos in pumping 3-4 foot surf for the remainder of Round 3 and half of Round 4 and then a change of venue to Scar Reef to finish off Round 4.

The swell had increased significantly overnight as predicted, so Yoyos was on fire with solid and consistent sets rolling in for most of the morning, giving the contestants some near perfect conditions to work with.  But when the strong winds came up and reports of sets starting to appear in the 4-foot range at Scar Reef came in, the crew got packing and in record time was set up in the boat for an afternoon session at Scars.

The four remaining heats of Round 4 were completed, and although Scars did fling a few nice barrels across the reef during the afternoon, due to the long waits between waves the decision was made to stop the competition for the day.

"I'm stoked that the boys got to surf both venues today, with Yoyos firing in the morning and Lady Scar making an appearance this afternoon for us.  We'd have liked to get a bit more of her of course, but we'll take it," said O'Neill's Tai Graham at the conclusion of the day.  "It's looking like tomorrow we'll be doing the final at Yoyos as the swell has been down-graded from what we were expecting, so we're looking to finish by mid morning tomorrow with very early start to take advantage of the best tides and winds."

The quarterfinal lineup tomorrow will be:
Quarterfinal 1:  Josh Haye vs Sandi Selamet
Quarterfinal 2:  Putra Hermawan vs Raditya Rondi
Quarterfinal 3:  Made Widiarta vs Soma Warsoma
Quarterfinal 4:  Rahtu Suargita vs Pepen Hendrik
Highlights of the morning's session included Bali's Soma Warsoma taking the high score honors with a lofty aerial, for which he received the highest score of the competition so far, 9.0 points out of a possible 10, a near perfect score.

17 year old Aussie Josh Haye first eliminated 2011 Coca-Cola ISC champion Marlon Gerber in Heat 5 of Round 3, and then narrowly bested current number 2 seeded Mustofa Jeksen in Heat 1 of Round 4, to get himself a place in the Quarterfinals, where he will be up against Sandi Selamet from West Java.

Selamat got the better of his mentor Dede Suryana Heat 2 of Round 4, keeping himself busy racking up points on the smaller inside waves while Suryana waited outside with priority in anticipation of the larger set waves.  Unfortunately for him most of the set waves swung wide and closed out, leaving him chasing around on the inside only needing a wave score of 3.9 to advance, but failing to find it.

Made Widiarta got a walk through in his Round 4 Heat 5 with Gazali Hamzah, because as Hamzah was walking out into the water to catch the boat for his heat he cut his heel quite deeply on a shell and had to return to the beach.

The two previous Scar Reef competition winners, Raditya Rondi (2008) and Rahtu Suargita (2009) are still in the running, looking to be hoisting the famed Scar Reef trophy sword after tomorrow's final, both putting in great performances today to nab quarterfinal berths.

Tomorrow morning's quarterfinals are planned to start at 6 am, so all the competitors and crew were informed that they should be at the contest site at 5:30 am, ready for the exciting conclusion of the O'Neill Freak of the Reef Challenge.

Michaela Partin Takes Women’s Division Win on Day 2 of the O’Neill Freak of the Reef Challenge in West Sumbawa

Michaela Partin Takes Women’s Division Win on Day 2 of the O’Neill Freak of the Reef Challenge in West Sumbawa

29 June 2012, Jelenga Beach, West Sumbawa: Day Two of the O’Neill Freak of the Reef Challenge got started with the Women’s Division contestants paddling out at Yoyos to decide who would be victor.  At the end of the 25-minute final it was Michaela Partin of the USA who paddled in as the Women’s “Freak of the Reef” winner over second place Salini Reggannis of Java and third place Alia of Kalimantan.

“I feel really lucky to have won here today,” admitted Partin.  “I’ve never surfed here before and so at first I had a hard time finding the right place in the lineup, but after I figured it out I started catching some good waves and it got much more fun. I’m super happy to have won another event, especially in such a beautiful place where the water is so clear and clean, I’m really stoked to be here for sure,” she added.

Partin won a previous Coca-Cola ISC event held at Macaronis in the Mentawai Islands just this last May, and the goofyfooter looks to be equally adept on her backhand with this win at Yoyos, now having won at both a lefthand and a righthand reef break.

Just after the Women’s final, strong winds begin to pick up speed and along with the receding tide created some challenging conditions for the start of Round 3, with rippable waves still presenting themselves but not with ideal consistency.

Current rankings leader Lee Wilson was the first victim of the inconsistent conditions in Heat 1, failing to fully complete an air reverse on his first wave and then falling on a couple more, leaving him in last place by mid heat.  With less than 10 minutes to go he finally completed an air reverse for 5.5 points, which left him only needing a 2 point wave to knock Made Darmayasa into third place, as Tipi Jabrik had a solid lock on the lead with to medium scores.

Unfortunately for Wilson, time ran out before another scorable wave came his way.  “Looking back on it, maybe I shouldn’t have gone so hard on those first couple of waves,” he said.  “But yesterday was so consistent I figured I had plenty of time and lots of waves would be coming through for me.  Then with time running out all I could do was wait.  And it just didn’t happen today,” he explained.

West Java’s Dede Suryana posted the morning’s best scores in Heat 2, with an air reverse getting him a 7.5 and then an Alley Oop a 6.0 to (of course) also rack up the highest combined heat score of the day a 13.50.

Fellow West Javan Sandi Selamet won Heat 3 with Bali’s Raditya Rondi coming in second to advance to Round 4, and in the final heat of the day it was Kuta duo Made Widiarta and Devis Ratif also making it through.

With the side to on shore wind picking up speed and at one point almost blowing the judges tent off its moorings, Contest Director Tai Graham decided to call it a day and run the rest of the Round 3 heats early tomorrow morning when the winds will be lighter and the swell due to increase.

Consistent with the Coca-Cola ISC’s “Keepin’ it Green” program of leaving each beach cleaner and greener than they found it, each day during and after the competition Curtis from the ROLE Foundation and several of the ISC surfers went around picking up trash around the contest site.

Plants were brought from Bali by truck and will be planted around the Scar Reef contest site, as Yoyos already has plenty of natural shrubs, trees, and other greenery in its still natural state.

Where to get hot Indo chicks in Bali

Travel safe in Bali - Travel insurance from Worldnomads.com

One of the best ways to get together with Indo chicks in Bali is DateInAsia.com. This free dating site allows you to sign up, post a profile and immediately get in touch with girls in Bali and all over Indo.

The chicks on DIA come in a few basic categories:

1. Normal girls looking for a boyfriend.
2. Normal / naughty girls looking for some fun.
3. Single parents or other desperados looking for a way out of their life.
4. Hookers
5. Freaks
6..............................and one in a while.................hotties.

Looking at it logically, hot girls don't need dating sites. Its the girls who can't get dates who go on dating sites. However, when hot Indo chicks live in places where westerners don't go and they dream of meeting a westerner, a dating site makes a lot of sense.

Tips: Be honest, polite, striaghforward. If you want a gf say so. If you want a sex partner say so.
Don't: Don't believe all the bullshit, don't waste your time dealing with head cases. Don't offer what you can't deliver. Don't deal with chicks who mention 'money problems'.

Have a good time on DIA. You can arrange dates and get to meet and enjoy plenty of decent Indo girls.

First Round Completed Today at Yoyo’s to Begin the Inaugural O’Neill Freak of the Reef Challenge in West Sumbawa

First Round Completed Today at Yoyo’s to Begin the Inaugural O’Neill Freak of the Reef Challenge in West Sumbawa

28 June 2012, Jelenga Beach, West Sumbawa:  The O’Neill Freak of the Reef Challenge in West Sumbawa got started today with the first round being completed at scenic Yoyo’s Beach in 3-4 foot waves and sideshore winds, providing the perfect setup for Indonesia’s top surfers to work out the travel kinks and get their game on.

The six star Coca-Cola ISC sanctioned professional surfing competition has drawn Indonesia’s top ranked surfers to compete in the beautiful and unspoiled West Sumbawa area, with a total prize purse of Rp 60 million rupiah up for grabs in the Men’s Open, Women’s and Master’s Divisions, along with valuable Coca-Cola ISC Championship points.

“Today’s decision to get started at Yoyo’s was an easy one,” said O’Neill’s Tai “Buddha” Graham.  “The conditions were perfect to get the boys out there and get warmed up.  We got the Round 1 heats done and expect to be back here early tomorrow morning for the next couple of rounds.  Yoyo’s always produces consistent swell and has those offshore to cross-shore winds that make for great aerial surfing, so we’re looking for lots of intense competitive heats tomorrow.”

The swell forecast is looking perfect for the event, with a building swell that should peak on Saturday afternoon for a great finish at Scar Reef. It promises to be another epic event on the Coca-Cola ISC Tour, as it travels around Indonesia surfing the best waves in the archipelago.

The first highlight of the day came in the first heat, which saw Bali’s Made Darmayasa nab the highest single wave score of 7 points (out of a possible 10) as well as the highest heat score of 12.75 (out of 20), mixing up big turns and a couple of air reverses. Australian Josh Haye took second in the same heat, with the second highest single wave score of 6.50 and the second highest heat score of 11.50.

Getting the nod for the most intense heat of the day was Coca-Cola ISC President Tipi Jabrik winning his heat after driving all night and half the day from Bali to the contest site at Yoyo’s.  He arrived with about 15 minutes to spare before the start of his heat, and once out in the water was quickly relegated to last place in the 3-man heat as 12-year-old Made Tedi from Bali had charged into the lead. 3 times younger than Jabrik, Tedi was charging the (for him) double overhead waves intent on a heat win, and Jabrik admitted to feeling the heat from the youngster.

“I was kinda relaxing during the first part of the heat, thinking I just needed a couple of 5 or 6 point waves to get the lead,” he said. I got a 5 midway through the heat and was in second, but then one of the other guys got a good score and knocked me down to third again.  That got me nervous, as I didn’t want to get knocked out so early after driving so far!  Thankfully a couple of set waves came in late in the heat and I got a good score, 7 points or so, and that put me into first.  That was a relief for sure!”  It was a heat that both Jabrik and young Tedi will certainly not forget.

Another highlight was the battle of the Andre’s in Heat 6, where West Java’s Andre Julian and Lakey Peak Sumbawa’s Andre Anwar, both goofyfooters, duked it out for first place, trading the lead numerous times during the heat each trying to out do each other with deep gouging bottom turns, blasting the tops of the waves, and pulling off long floaters.  In the end it was the younger Andre Anwar that got the nod by a slim .15 of a point, the final heat scores 9.90 to 9.75.

Tomorrow promises even more intense competition as the top 16 seeded ISC surfers take to the water to meet the challengers that advance from Round 1, with number one seeded Lee Wilson leading things off in Heat 1 of Round 2.

After the surfing action and concluded for the day, the crew all returned to the Scar Reef HQ at Jelenga Beach for the official opening ceremony.  Speeches by Tipi Jabrik and the Regent of West Sumbawa KH. DR. Zulkifli Muhadlihas were followed by the traditional ringing of the gong by Tai Graham, while Tipi Jabrik and Regent Muhadlihas looked on.  Local traditional dances and music followed to complete the event.

Surfer Girls Pua and Salini Take On Cimaja Point in West Java

Travel safe in Bali - Travel insurance from Worldnomads.com

Surfer Girls Pua and Salini Take On Cimaja Point in West Java

26 June 2012, Kuta-Bali: Surfer Girls Pua Johnson and Salini Rengganis just returned to Bali from a trip to Cimaja Point in West Java, where they got a chance to surf and attend the Quiksilver Open West Java surfing competition that took place from June 14-17.

It was Pua’s first contest ever outside of Bali, so she was really excited about it.  She traveled to Cimaja with her father Richard, leaving on an early morning flight from Bali to Jakarta, and because she had never been to Cimaja before, didn’t know that the beach wasn’t close to Jakarta.  “I was so sleepy when we left Bali, but when we got to Jakarta I was so psyched…all I wanted to do was surf,” she said.  “But then I found out we had to drive in a car for about 5 hours!  I did fall back asleep in the car, but as soon as we got to the hotel I couldn’t wait to go surfing.  There weren’t many people in the water and they let me catch some waves, so it was really fun.“

The next morning she and her dad went down to the beach to prepare for her heat and she started wondering where Salini was.  Turns out Salini was stuck in traffic on the drive from Jakarta, so Pua went out and surfed her heat under Richards watchful eye and coaching.  “I was super hyped to be at the contest, and when my heat came I was a little nervous. I could have done better,” she said.  “I almost made it through my heat against Michaela and Iis, but I let it slip away.  Next time I’ll try and train harder, and hopefully do better.”

It was Salini’s second trip to Cimaja, and she was happy just to be there at the event with Pua and the other girls, even though she missed her heat.  “I had been at a photo shoot for a film festival for three days in Bandung, and we finished at 4 am in the morning.  So we left at 5 am and got stuck in traffic,” she explained.  “But I’m glad I finally got there and could hang out and surf with the other girls in the afternoon.”

The next day she got to go to another nearby surf spot and do some free surfing with Annissa from Thailand, Gamala Hanafiah from Jakarta and some others, while Gamala’s husband Andryz took photos of them from the water.

Nadia Bintoro, Head of Marketing Communication at Surfer Girl commented: “It’s unfortunate that Salini wasn’t able to make it to her heat, but Pua did quite well competing outside Bali for the first time. We are very proud of the girls and believe it would make valuable knowledge for the next competitions”

Travel safe in Bali - Travel insurance from Worldnomads.com

Surfer Girl Beach Clean Up for World Oceans Day
To celebrate World Oceans day 2012 and mark the inaugural world Coral Triangle day on the 8th of June, Surfer Girl was delighted to organize a beach clean up at Jerman Beach, Tuban, Bali.

In line with The Happiest Girls Brand in the Worlds mission statement To make a positive difference through all that we do Surfer Girl participates and organizes beach clean ups on a regular basis as part of the companies CSR:- Care Share Respect and Green Practices programs.

For World Oceans Day the Surfer Girl family was excited to mark the date with the largest beach clean up organized by the company for the year so far.

World Oceans Day this year was connected with the worlds first international Coral Triangle Day, celebrated in several locations around the Coral Triangle region on June 9, 2012. The purpose of Coral Triangle day is to highlight the importance of marine conservation and to raise awareness on this global center of marine biodiversity.

The Coral Triangle is a six million square-kilometer ocean expanse that contains the highest number of reef building corals on the planet. It spans across six countries in Asia and the Pacific including Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Solomon Islands and Timor Leste. Its spectacular coral reefs systems host thousands of whales, dolphins, rays, sharks, and six of the worlds seven species of marine turtles. More than 120 million people heavily depended on the region's marine resources for food and income.

Ni Made Rusmawati, General Manager of Surfer Girl Indonesia, said: We are very proud that as a positive brand, Surfer Girl is always consistent in doing real efforts to preserve the environment especially the beaches in Bali, being the home of Summer the Surfer Girl and I cant think of a more appropriate way for the Surfer Girl family to celebrate World Oceans day.
The afternoon kicked off with over 70 excited members of the Surfer Girl team, along with Surfer Girl CSR partners from SLB Jimbaran, Yayasan Kasih Peduli Anak, Bali Life Foundation and WWF gathering at the beach ready to do their part to mark the international date. As everyone set about enthusiastically cleaning the beach to make sure every piece of rubbish was gathered ready to be collected by Eco Bali for recycling some of the talented students from SLB Jimbaran kept the atmosphere lively with their Jimbe traditional music performance.

Once the beach clean up came to an end the event was closed with an additional touch of fun from the Surfer Girl team themselves as they put on the first of the annual Surfer Girl internal talent shows of the year.

Lee Wilson Takes Quiksilver Open West Java 2012 Win

Travel safe in Bali - Travel insurance from Worldnomads.com

Lee Wilson Takes Quiksilver Open West Java 2012 Win

17 June 2012, Cimaja-West Java: Lee Wilson put on an impressive display of competitive surfing in the 25 minute finale of the Quiksilver Open West Java at Cimaja Beach today to win the Men’s Open Division final over fellow Bali surfer Mustofa Jeksen.  Wilson took to the air and used his full repertoire of progressive surfing maneuvers to score first a 9.5 (out of a possible 10 points) and then follow it up with a 7.5 to leave Jeksen needing a combination of waves to gain the lead.  When the horn blew the end of the final, Wilson's combined score was 17 points to Jeksen's 10.2.  Wilson was last year’s Quiksilver Best West Java event winner as well, which now makes him a two-time champ at Cimaja.

From the podium at the beach during the trophy presentation, Wilson first thanked the locals for sharing their beach and the organizing crew in Cimaja, saying “I love coming here to Cimaja, thanks so much to everybody that made it possible.”  Then he added, “and a special thanks to my daughter Ava, who is my inspiration.”

According to Wilson’s father Robert, Lee has been coming to Cimaja regularly since January of 1985, when he was still in his mother’s stomach!  Lee was born in Jakarta in October of 1985, his father from Australia and his mother from Indonesia.

Wilson was last year’s Quiksilver Best West Java winner and also the winner of the most recent Coca-Cola ISC surf competition held just two weeks ago in the Mentawai Islands of Sumatra. He was in top form during the entire event, consistently posting big scores and defeating the best of the best surfers in his chase for the top spot on the podium, including bringing down local Cimaja powerhouse Dede Suryana earlier today in Quarterfinal 1, then veteran and 2004 ISC champion Pepen Hendrik in Semifinal 1 before meeting goofyfooter Mustofa Jeksen in the final.

“I couldn’t hardly sleep last night,” said Wilson after being asked about his matchup with Suryana earlier in the morning, “as I kept thinking about Dede and how strong he was surfing.  I didn’t know how I was going to get past him, I really didn’t, because the way he was surfing yesterday was the best I’ve ever seen him surf.  In our heat this morning it seemed like he was going to win it until I got that barrel and scored 9 points, and then I was so lucky no more good waves came in. ”

Suryana was understandably disappointed at not being in the final and winning the event in front of his hometown friends and family, but was introspective in his response saying, “I think I was a bit too relaxed out there actually, as I had looked at the swell report last night it showed that the swell was building today.  I was confident that there would be more and bigger set waves, so I chose to be patient, which ended up working against me.  But that’s competition, it’s like that sometimes and we can’t control the waves, so it’s ok. There is always the next comp so we can try again!”

Mustofa Jeksen was also very positive after his second place finish, saying “Sure I would have liked to win, but going backside at Cimaja limits my variety of maneuvers and Lee was surfing so good, doing things like getting two airs on one wave, so it was really difficult.  But I’m happy about second place, as I have already won the first event of the year and now got a second, so I’m in a good position going into the next event, which is the lefthander of Scar Reef in West Sumbawa.”  With his runner up finish today, Jeksen is now number 2 in the Coca-Cola ISC tour 2012 rankings.

Wilson now sits in the number one spot in the Coca-Cola ISC Tour Open Division rankings with two contest wins already this year.  He has also won two Coca-Cola ISC championships, the first in 2007 and the second in 2009, and looks to be well on his way to a third one in 2012.

In the Longboard Division final it was another repeat win for Java’s Arip “Mencos” Hidayat, whose mastery of the longboard is almost legendary.  He quickly combo’d the rest of the field by racking up high scores of 9.25 and 8.75, with the Philippines Luke Landrigan giving chase but settling for second spot.  Arip is also the reigning 2011 Coca-Cola ISC Longboard Champion.

The Philippines can be very proud of the performance put up by Nilbie Blancada in the Women’s Division, which had a truly international final with women from Indonesia, Taiwan, and Australia in addition to the Philippines.  Nilbe, who hails from Siargao Island and calls the world famous wave of Cloud Nine her home break, charged the Cimaja waves, big or small, without a hint of hesitation, clearly dominating each heat and the final.  “I’m so happy to win, and happy to be here in Indonesia to surf.  It’s the first time I’ve been out of the Philippines so it’s a little different for me, but it’s nice to be here and meet new people, and surf Indonesia waves,” she said.

The Masters Division was once again taken out by Sujari, the older brother of Dede Suryana, so he now has two Quiksilver Open trophies on his shelf.  Ketut Juliarta of Bali gave him a good chase, eventually losing out by only half a point, but Sujari’s local knowledge and years of surfing Cimaja Point gave him near perfect wave selection and allowed him a variety of maneuvers with which to impress the judges.

The Quiksilver Open West Java was blessed with near perfect weather and surfing conditions during the four days of competition, with 3-4 foot waves consistently rolling in and making for an easy job for Contest Director Tipi Jabrik, who is also Quiksilver Indonesia’s Sports Marketing Manager and the Coca-Cola ISC’s President.

“We love coming to Cimaja,” said Jabrik, “as its such a consistent and contestable wave for all surfing divisions.  Plus it’s a beautiful place, the beach is easily accessible, and the people are so helpful, making it really easy to come here.  The West Java government has been very supportive as well Pak Dadang as the local organizer, and through our Coca-Cola ISC Keepin’ It Green program that is supported by Quiksilver, Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia, the ROLE Foundation and GUS, we can keep this place looking better and better each year.”

As part of the Coca-Cola ISC Keepin’ It Green program aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of the tour wherever it goes, there have been daily beach cleanups involving the local school children than have been very well received, and after the beachside awards presentation on Sunday afternoon the Quiksilver and Coca-Cola Amatil crew along with Curtis Lowe from the ROLE Foundation planted some trees near the beach to help lessen the environment impact in the future.  “We’re so delighted to see that the kids are so happy and into picking up the trash and keeping their beach clean,” said Curtis.  “They really seem to be getting it, and we’re looking forward to seeing even more progress next year.  Leaving this beach cleaner than we found it, and planting some trees that will help clean the air and preserve the soil here is the least we can do, both for the locals and for the overall environment. And a special thanks to Tisah, who is here at the beach everyday without fail picking up trash.  She more than deserves the Keepin’ It Green Award!”
