About the Rip Curl Cup

Now in its ninth year, the Rip Curl Cup Invitational at Padang Padang is Indonesia’s longest-running surfing competition and the only ISC tour event featuring top international surfers alongside Indonesia’s best. The field of 32 surfers is split equally between 16 of Indonesia’s all-time greatest and 16 of the world’s best barrel riders. This invitational format, along with the allure of the wave at Padang and a $10,000 prize purse, makes the Rip Curl Cup the most anticipated event of the Indonesian surf season.

For 2012, Rip Curl has extended the event waiting-period to a grand total of six weeks to ensure catching an epic swell for the “one-day, one-swell” event. This year's window will run from July 15th through Aug. 26th and the contest will be run entirely on the chosen day. When contest directors see an ideal “Padang swell” in the forecast, they will give the green light and the 32 competitors will have 24 hours to make it to Bali’s Bukit Peninsula.

History-Making Surfboards for Sale from Quiksilver Legends Mark Richards, Tom Carroll, Martin Potter, Matt Hoy and Jake Paterson - Help Clean Up Bali’s Beaches

Travel safe in Bali - Travel insurance from Worldnomads.com

History-Making Surfboards for Sale from Quiksilver Legends Mark Richards, Tom Carroll, Martin Potter, Matt Hoy and Jake Paterson - Help Clean Up Bali’s Beaches

Get onto www.hoyshow.com surfing fans and make a pledge to buy one of these 5 legend's surfboards.  These exact replica surfboards from five of Quiksilver’s greatest surfing legends, Mark Richards, Tom Carroll, Martin Potter, Matt Hoy, and Jake Paterson are being sold to support their on-going efforts to raise money to help clean up Bali’s beaches.

This surfboard auction is part of the second annual Bali’s Big Eco Weekend recently held on July 6-8, as a Quiksilver and Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia sponsored event that is focused on raising the awareness of the importance of caring for Bali’s environment, to the local community, the government, tourism stakeholders, and the tourists who visit the “Island of the Gods.”

The highest pledge on each board at 6PM July 13th (Australian EST) will have the first right to purchase and own a piece of history, with the money going towards the on-going corporate social responsibility efforts by Quiksilver and Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia to create a cleaner and healthier Bali for everyone to enjoy.

Up for sale are 5 legendary and game changing exact replica surfboards that have been hand made and personally signed, along with a signed canvas image, each of which has a short story written about the surfer and the surfboard by Vaughan Blakey, the editor of Surfing World in Australia.

Four-time world champion and Newcastle’s own Mark Richards has created a replica of the single fin board that he won his first Hawaiian events on, which was originally shaped by Reno Abellira. “It was a single fin wing pin which for its time was cutting edge in terms of rocker, rail shape, and outline. I recreated the replica from memory as a tribute to this board and the influence Reno had on my shaping and competitive success,” says Richards.

Two-time world champion Tom Carroll, the first pro surfer to sign a million dollar contract, chose the hot pink 7’8” Pat Rawson with which he did “The Snap” during one of his famous Pipeline wins on 12 foot bomb as his contribution.  The superbly fit and powerful Carroll aboard this hot pink board snapping under the lip of that awesome wave is a truly iconic scene.

1989 world champion Martin “Pottz” Potter’s chosen surfboard is his title-winning 6’2” Blue Flame shaped by Glen Minami of Blue Hawaii. Pottz is known as the pioneer of progressive surfing, the man who revolutionized surfing with aerial maneuvers; free surfing during competitions to everyone’s amazement. Pottz with his blue-flamed board beneath his feet, speeding across the water before taking to the air…this board was indeed the portent of today’s surfing style.

And who could forget the all black Pacific Dreams 6’3 of Matt Hoy with the white Maltese Cross?  The never-say-die party legend who can take waves apart like few others living much cleaner lives can, has 5 world tour event wins to his credit, and is still admired for his ability to live life his own way.  This black “outlaw” board is a testament to the free spirit in all of us.

The fifth surfboard is from Western Australia’s Jake Paterson, whose all guts for all the glory charge in the dying seconds at Backdoor won him the Pipeline Masters and the admiration and respect of the world’s best surfers. His board that day….a borrowed 7’4” baby swallow…which is on display in Jake’s surf shop today.

Simply click on one of the links below and post your pledge amount, the highest pledge come Friday the 13th will be the proudly own of one of these iconic history making boards:

IB Kusuma Rai Tanabe Crowned 2012 Quiksilver’s King of the Groms SEA Champion

IB Kusuma Rai Tanabe Crowned 2012 Quiksilver’s King of the Groms SEA Champion

9 July 2012, Kuta-Bali:  15 year old Ida Bagus Kusuma Rai Tanabe (Gusde) of Kuta was crowned the 2012 Quiksilver King of the Groms SEA champion yesterday on Kuta Beach in front of his family and friends after winning a very close 25 minute final dual against Aussie expat Reef Doig, who is also 15 years old.

The two Under 16 year old surfers had battled through two days of challenging wave conditions and a talented field of frothing grommets (surfer slang for kids under 16) to meet on Sunday afternoon and decide who would be crowned the “King” and receive the all-expense-paid trip to the Quiksilver King of the Groms International Final in France, as well as a brand new Yamaha motorbike.

It was a epic final in 1-2 foot beach break waves, where most waves allowed one or two turns at best, as these young rippers went blow for blow, smashing the lip, racing and floating over sections, pulling out all the stops to impress the judges and get the big scores.

In the exciting climax, with less than a minute left and Gusde in the lead, young Reef spied a nice little wave lining up and then took off, knowing he only needed a small score of 3.05 to take the win. After smashing three turns to finish the wave off, Reef, Gusde and everybody on the beach walked back to the judging tower waiting for the announcement, but they wouldn't hear the news until later at the beachside presentation.  “It was close….but not close enough Reef,” exclaimed Quiksilver’s Tipi Jabrik to Reef and the waiting crowd as the presentation began.  “You needed a 3.05 and the judges gave you a 2.9!  Good effort Reef, and congratulations to Gusde, the new King of the Groms SEA Champion!”

Even though he was the runner up, Reef was still smiling and from the podium replied to Tipi and the audience, “It was a great final and thanks to my sponsors, and congratulations to Gusde who was ripping!”

Gusde was perhaps still in shock from the announcement of his win, for when asked how he felt about winning the King of the Groms title and getting a trip to France could just smile and reply, “I’m really happy, so happy!”  He'll no doubt be working on his French and English language skills from now on in preparation for his trip.

A total of 97 boy and girl groms joined up for the annual Quiksilver King of the Grom’s SEA Final at Kuta Beach, and new this year was the addition of a special Roxy Jam for the girls, where they could compete together instead of mixing it up with the boys.

A total of 16 girls surfed together in the inaugural Roxy Jam, with 10-year-old Joniati “Cinta” Hansel winning the final with her massive floater.  She then got an equally massive hug and kiss from her father shaper Bruce Hansel back on the beach, as well as received a Roxy voucher for 2 million rupiah (over $200 USD) and the Coca-Cola Encouragement Award of a new custom made surfboard.

Quiksilver’s Jake Paterson was asked to comment on the level of performance and improvements he has seen in Bali’s surfing scene this year as compared to the past few years, and he replied, “The level of surfing here is just going through the roof.   This weekend the waves were pretty small and difficult to surf, but those kids were out there ripping the bags out of em.  So I’d say the future of Indo surfing is looking really good.  What impressed me the most were the 10 and 12 year olds though.  The 14 -16 year old group are really good right now, but this next wave of kids will be incredible.  I’m looking forward to seeing how they develop over the next few years, and I can’t wait to come back and do it all again next year!

The Quiksilver King of the Groms SEA Final was part of the Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia and Quiksilver “Bali’s Big Eco Weekend”, an annual event organized with the intention of bringing environmental awareness to the public and private sectors of Indonesia and the world regarding Bali and Indonesia’s problems with waste management and keeping the beaches and water clean.

To help draw attention and raise awareness of these issues facing Bali, Quiksilver elicited help from their world famous team of surfing legends, 4-time World Champion Mark Richards, 2-time World Champion Tom Carroll, 1989 World Champion Martin Potter, outlaw power surfer Matt Hoy, and Pipeline Master Jake Paterson.

These five legends came to the beach and signed posters, watched the groms surf, and then surfed themselves in the Locals vs Legends tag team challenge.  It was a definite highlight of the day for the beach crowd, with superb and hilarious commentary by Surfing World Editor Vaughan Blakey, as the Legends took on the local Quiksilver Grom and the Quiksilver Local teams.

It the end it was the Quiksilver Local team taking the trophy off the Legends, who had won last year with a horn-beating wave by Jake Paterson.  But this time it was the Local’s Tipi Jabrik who got the winning wave over Jake, to come in to the beach with his board held high.

But Jake wasn’t too upset, saying, “Don’t worry Tipi, next year when the waves are bigger we’ll get it back…just you wait!

Tom Carroll was the new legend on the team this year, and had a great time as well, also mentioning wave size as having something to do with their loss, saying, “This legends thing was good fun, but the waves were so small I couldn’t hardly surf!  But it was really fun hanging out with MR, Pottz, Hoyo and Jake as well as with Ketut Menda and all the Bali crew, and seeing those groms surfing against us. There was a great crowd too, and I’m glad they enjoyed it as much as we did.”

As part of these Quiksilver legends activities during their stay in Bali, they participated in a charity golf tournament and dinner at the Pan Pacific Nirwana Bali Resort, where their replica surfboards along with other items were auctioned off to raise a whopping $44,000 USD to help clean up Bali’s beaches.
These funds along with funds donated by Garuda Indonesia and other sponsors will buy beach-cleaning equipment to help with the effort to get Bali cleaner and greener.

Quiksilver SEA CEO Paul Hutson was excited and proud of the great results from the weekend, saying “I think it’s safe to say that our expectations were more than exceeded this weekend, and for that I’d like to thank our presenting sponsor Garuda Indonesia, our surfing legends for giving their time up to come and help us, our great partner Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia, Yamaha and the whole list of other sponsors, the lifeguards that help us out every year, and everybody that helped make this weekend a huge success.  Raising a total of Rp 452,400,000 (about $48,000 USD) is quite an achievement, and will result in a substantial leap forward in our mission to help us clean up Bali, setting an example for all of Indonesia and also other parts of the world to follow.”

Non-Stop Action at Kuta Beach For Start of Quiksilver King of the Groms South East Asia Final

Travel safe in Bali - Travel insurance from Worldnomads.com

Non-Stop Action at Kuta Beach For Start of Quiksilver King of the Groms South East Asia Final

7 July 2012, Kuta-Bali:  Bali’s Kuta Beach was jam-packed with action today for the start of the annual Quiksilver King of the Groms South East Asian Final, with over 80 under-16-year-old boy grommets taking to the waves at Halfways to compete for their place in tomorrow’s run for the coveted “King of the Groms” SEA title, and 16-under-16-year-old girls joining up for their first-ever Roxy Jam in Indonesia.

In perfect weather conditions and with 2-3 foot waves on offer, a frothing mix of boy and girl groms from Indonesia, Australia, Brazil, Japan, the USA, and a few other countries gathered on the beach to hang out, have a fun day in the sun, and do a little competing to see who could catch the best waves, impress the judges, and get through their heats so they could come back tomorrow and do it all again in the race for the final.

Last year’s King of the Groms SEA Final had 78 contestants, and this year’s signups trumped that by a significant margin, due primarily to the addition of the Roxy Jam that added 16 girls to the 81 boys, making for a record setting 97 entries.  There were so many contestants signing up that 8 trial heats had to be run in order to parse down the boy’s field for the 64-man heat draw.

This resulted in a very full day of surfing, as the trial heats got underway at just after 8:30am, and it took until 5:00 pm to complete Round 3 of the boys and the semifinals of the girls to set things up for the finals tomorrow.

Of course there was the serious side of the competition, as there is the significant prize of the KOG crown, the trip to France to compete in the KOG International Final, and a brand new Yamaha motorbike at stake, but it was the camaraderie and fun that was the most evident during the day, as the kids ate their lunch from banana leave wrappers, had lots of water and juice to drink, and did fun stuff like dressing up in Sumo outfits and wrestling on the beach, dragging Coca-Cola trash cans around the beach picking up trash, cheering and razzing their friends who either lost or won their heats, and of course going out and tearing up some waves!

On the list of standouts in the boy’s competition today were Riski Eka, Rio Waida and his brother Ryuki, along with Komang Sastrawan and Raju Sena.  Last year’s runner up Angga Bayu and equal third finisher Jeren Kering both made their heats today to advance to the man on man Round 4, so look for an exciting finale as these future superstars light up Kuta Beach with their best ever performances in search of the King of the Groms crown.

In the Roxy Jam after six heats of fun waves in the hot Kuta sun the finalists were decided, and it looks to be Taina Izquiredo, Kailani Johnson, Cinta Hansel, and Julika meeting tomorrow to decide who will get the number one spot on the podium.

Of special mention today was the fact that 9-year-old Jack Potter, 1989 World Champion Martin “Pottz” Potter’s son, surfed in his very first contest heat today at Kuta Beach, after only surfing for about the last 2 months!

After his heat he this to share about his experience and also some advice to the other competitors, saying, “In the King of the Groms the most important thing is to have the most fun you can in your heat, like I did…I was just thinking happy things.  Don’t think like ‘oh this is going to be really hard’….just think, ‘I’m here to have fun!”

His father had this to add; “Jack just competed in his first proper heat and he did really well, I’m super proud of him.  I think it’s really healthy for the kids to hang out with kids their own age, and to learn the ropes of competitive surfing, as it gets them adjusted for what’s coming later in life.  The whole spirit of the King of the Groms isn’t about winning, its about mixing it up with your friends, having some fun, getting some waves, swapping stories, and swapping cultures by meeting kids from all over the world.  It’s really good to get Jack involved with it.”

Potter along with Quiksilver surfing legends Mark Richards, Tom Carroll, Matt Hoy, and Jake Paterson are again attending the King of the Groms in Bali this year, and tomorrow they will all be hanging out at the beach cheering on the groms and signing posters as well as competing in a fun Locals vs Legends surf competition on Sunday afternoon.

The King of the Groms SEA Final is being held during the 2nd annual Bali’s Big Eco Weekend, a combined effort on the part of Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia and Quiksilver Indonesia to educate the local and national public and heighten the awareness of the environmental issues facing Bali today.

Tomorrow will see an afternoon conclusion to the King of the Groms event with the action starting at 8 am, so don’t miss out on the biggest surfing event of the year so far on Kuta Beach. Tell all your friends and favorite people to come on down and enjoy all the action with you.

Quiksilver’s King of the Groms South East Asian Final at Kuta Beach to Run July 7th-8th

4 July 2012, Kuta-Bali, Kuta Beach will once again host the annual Quiksilver King of the Groms South East Asian Final over the weekend of July 7th and 8th, with Indonesia’s best 16 year old and under surfers competing for the coveted “King of the Groms SEA” title and an all expense paid trip to France.

The winning “King” will travel to Hossegor Beach in France to compete as one of only 18 other surfers from around the world in the King of the Groms International Final that will be held during the Quiksilver Pro from September 28 – October 8 2012.

Quiksilver’s 2-time “King” Andre Julian from Cimaja West Java will be on hand to give advice and to support his junior Quiksilver team mate 12 year old Rio Waida, who has been blowing up in every junior contest he enters. Rio has been surfing since he was 5 year old, and has been in the finals of the last 5 contests so far this year in Bali, winning 4 of them.

“I’m going to do my best to win and be the King of the Groms this year,” says Rio.  “I really want to go to France so I can compete in the international King of the Groms and watch the Quiksilver Pro.”

Rio was invited to the Quiksilver Pro on the Goldcoast in Australia this last March, where he got to surf and hang out with all the pro surfers including 11-time World Champion Kelly Slater.  “That was the most fun ever,” exclaimed Rio.  “I got to surf at Snapper Rocks and D-Bah with some of the pro surfers, and got to meet and hang out with Kelly Slater!”

78 grommets (surfer slang for young surfers in their teens and below) signed up to compete in last year’s event and those numbers are expected to be beaten this year during this national school holiday weekend. And it looks like there will be no shortage of great waves for the competition either, as the forecast shows a 2.2 meter swell at 14 second intervals being predicted for Saturday’s start.

Again attending the King of the Groms event this year are Quiksilver surfing legends Mark Richards, Tom Carroll, Martin Potter, Matt Hoy, and Jake Paterson, who will be hanging out at the beach watching the groms and signing posters on both days, as well as competing in a fun Locals vs Legends surf competition on Sunday afternoon.

The King of the Groms SEA Final will be held during the 2nd annual Bali’s Big Eco Weekend, a combined effort on the part of Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia and Quiksilver Indonesia to educate the local and national public and heighten the awareness of the environmental issues facing Bali today.

Day One of the King of the Groms competition will kick off at Halfways on Kuta Beach at 7 am, and will include a Roxy Jam Expression Session as well.

Day Two will see the conclusion of the King of the Groms event starting at 7 am, and the always fun Locals vs Legends taking place in the afternoon.

Don’t miss out on the biggest weekend event of the year at Kuta Beach, so tell all your friends and favorite people to come on down and enjoy all the action with you.

For 2012, Rip Curl has extended the event waiting period to a grand total of six weeks to ensure catching an epic swell for the “one-day, one-swell” event. This year's window will run from July 15th through Aug. 26th and the contest will be run entirely on the chosen day. When contest directors see an ideal “Padang swell” in the forecast, they will give the green light and the 32 competitors will have 24 hours to make it to Bali’s Bukit Peninsula.
