Shortboards, Women and Rain on Day 2 of Taiwan Open of Surfing

Jinzun Harbor-Taitung County: After an excellent day of weather yesterday,
rain was the order of the day as all but the Junior division contestants saw
action on Day Two of the 2012 Taiwan Open of Surfing, taking place at Jinzun
Harbor in Taitung County, Taiwan.
Despite the inconvenience of the rain for the organizers and
the spectators, the wave conditions continued to be excellent for the
contestants for the majority of the day, with solid 3-4 foot waves rolling in
with regularity.
At just after 7 am, with a rising tide conditions and glassy
wave faces, the contest directors elected to start off the day by sending out
the 9 remaining Noserider Pro Invitational contestants to decide their 5 man
final. Despite snapping his board
near the end of his heat, Nic Jones (AUS) posted the highest single wave score
of a 7.1 and combined two wave score of 13.4 to lead the field. He was followed by Taylor Jenson (USA) with
11.9 points and Rosie Locke (AUS) who also with 11.9 points, then Cheng
Tung-Ming (TWN) with 8.1 and Chou Chong Hong (TWN) with 7.8 to round out the
final 5.
When asked how he felt being one of the two locals making it
into the final, Cheng Tung-Ming replied, “I felt like it was going to be a
difficult heat because everyone is so talented, so I just tried as best I could
to choose the right waves that would give me the most scoring potential. I am
so happy to surf against such great surfers, and I hope it helps me to progress
my surfing. I am really happy to represent Taiwan in the final.”
Tung-Ming, who is 37 years old, lives in the Kenting area,
which is about a 3 hour drive from Jinzun Harbor and has been surfing now for
over 20 years.
In the highly competitive Longboard Division, Indonesia’s
Arip “Mencos” Nurhidayat won the first heat of their quarterfinals by posting a
set of solid scores for his often unique and mostly unpredictable surfing
style, and is very focused on ending up in the top spot of the podium tomorrow.
“I was really disappointed yesterday at not getting through my heat in the
noseriding division,” said Arip. “So
now my goal is to win the longboard division, and that’s what I have to
do. There are some really good
surfers here, but I’m not going to think about that, I’m just going to have to
surf really good so I can win.”
Arip hails from the small town of Batu Karas in West Java, known as the
Malibu of Java, and is the current Indonesian (ISC) and Asian (ASC) longboard
champion.
Possibly the most interesting matchup occurred today in the
Men’s Open division man on man Round 4, where in Heat 8 it was 12-year-old Rory
MacDonald (TWN) who was sent out to take on world renown free surfer Dean Brady
(AUS). After his heat, Rory was
asked for his reaction regarding the matchup. “I didn’t care,” he said smiling. “I just wanted to surf and get some
good waves. I really don’t care
who is out there because I’m looking at the waves and trying to find the best
ones. That’s what’s important to
me.”
Quarterfinal matchups tomorrow for the Men’s Open are: Raditya Rondi (INA) taking on Nic Jones
(AUS), Dede Suryana (INA) vs (Rahtu Suargita (INA), Marlon Gerber (INA) vs Dean
Brady (AUS), and Taylor Jenson (USA) vs Tipi Jabrik (INA).
After the completion of Round 4 of the Men’s Open, as the
wind and the rain began to blow in earnest, the four heats of the Women’s
Division were run in rather challenging conditions. Indonesia’s 5 –time Women’s champion Yasnyiar “Bonne” Gea
posted the sessions highest single wave score of 7.5 in the opening heat, and
ended up also with the highest combined heat score of 13.00 to lead the field
into the semifinals. “Yes it was hard out there,” she said. “Finding a good wave was the most
challenging, one that I could turn on without falling down! Then there was a lot of paddling in
between. But I’m so glad to make
it through and into the semi’s.”
Tomorrow will see the conclusion of the Taiwan Open of
Surfing, where the winners will be awarded their share of the NTD 600,000 (USD
$20,000) in prize money up for grabs across the Men’s, Women’s, Longboard and Noserider
Pro Invitational divisions, which is the biggest prize purse ever offered in a
surfing event in Taiwan.
The Taiwan Open of Surfing is an Asian Surfing Championship
sanctioned Ultima event.
