Big Waves Bring Big Moves on Day 2 of Oakley Pro 2012 at Canggu as Round 4 is Completed
2 April 2012, Canggu-Bali: Rounds 3 and 4 of the Oakley Pro 2012 at Canggu were completed today in pumping 4-6 foot surf, with occasional bigger sets closing out the entire beach. The big waves brought out the big moves from Indonesia’s best pro surfers, and after the final horn blew a stop to the days competition there now 8 surfers left to battle it out in tomorrows quarterfinals that are scheduled to begin at 6:30 am, conditions permitting.
It is hoped that the competition will conclude tomorrow, as the already sizeable swell is predicted to be increasing steadily over the next several days and Canggu isn’t able to handle a much bigger swell than what was on offer today. If conditions don’t permit completing the competition tomorrow, it will go on hold as there would still be 12 days left in the 14 day waiting period that ends on April 14.
The day’s action began at 7 am with 2011 Coca-Cola ISC champion Marlon Gerber starting his 2012 season by easily winning Heat 1 of Round 3. He later also won his man-on-man Round 4 heat against a charging Gazali Hamzah to secure himself a spot in the quarterfinals, where he is now matched up against number 12 seeded Darmaputra Tonjo.
After his Round 4 heat win Gerber was asked for his thoughts at the start of the new season, to which he replied, “I’m really looking forward to competing this year, but for sure I feel a bit more pressure than I did at this same time last year. I’m committed to getting another championship this year, definitely, so I’m probably thinking more about things and less relaxed. But I’m confident too, knowing that I already have my name on that championship trophy.”
Later he was asked if he had any favorite competition sites this season he said, “No, I like them all. After all, the approach and the goal is the same for all of them right? Surf your best and win! I like going backside and frontside just the same, but when there is a wave like Macaroni’s I’m super stoked because I love that wave. I’ve been surfing it since I was 18. But anyways, its nice to see that this year’s schedule looks more balanced with rights, lefts, and peaks, so I’m pretty stoked to be competing on the ISC. I have new boards from YU, my new board sponsor, and they are working really good, so I’m all set.”
Gerber will compete against young Darmaputra Tonjo in Quarterfinal 1, which will be no walk through, as Tonjo grabbed international headlines last year at the 2011 Oakley World Pro Junior contest where as a wildcard he took out first number 2 seeded Nat Young and then number 1 seed Jack Freestone.
One of the most hard fought battles of the day came in Heat 8 of Round 3, which saw arguably Bali’s best goofyfooters Garut Widiarta, Made “Bol” Adi Putra, and Raditya Rondi, all related by the way, with one of West Java’s best goofyfooters Asep Pahruroji from Cimaja in the heat. “That was one crazy heat,” said Widiarta back on the beach after winning the heat. “I couldn’t believe it when I saw the heat draw. Us Bali boys are all from the same family and Asep from Cimaja surfs Cimaja every day, which is a right just like Canggu, so I’m really kinda surprised I won it. Now I’m up against Mus (Mustofa Jeksen) in the quarters, so at least I’m up against another goofyfooter. I didn’t have lots of luck in comps last year, so I’m hoping that my luck has changed for this year and I can get into a final or even win.”

Atraksi-Atraksi Terbaik Hadir Dengan Set Ombak Besar Sebagai Penutup Babak 4 di Hari Kedua Oakley Pro 2012, Canggu
2 April 2012, Canggu-Bali: Babak 3 dan 4 event surf Oakley Pro 2012 di Canggu selesai hari ini dengan ombak ketinggian 4-6 foot menutup set secara keseluruhan. Ombak-ombak besar yang tersaji menjadikan lanskap sempurna bagi para surfer pro terbaik Indonesia untuk bermanuver secara maksimal. Saat horn dibunyikan sebagai tanda berakhirnya babak hari ini, event menyisakan 8 surfer untuk bertanding di perempat final yang dijadwalkan besok dan dimulai pukul 6.30 pagi apabila kondisi cuaca memungkinkan.
Diharapkan kompetisi bisa selesai besok karena swell yang tersedia sekarang diprediksi akan terus naik di beberapa hari ke depan, mengingat Canggu sendiri sudah tidak mungkin menyediakan swell yang lebih besar dari yang tersaji hari ini. Jikalau kondisi tidak mengijinkan untuk diselesaikannya kompetisi esok hari, event tetap akan di hold karena masih ada 12 hari tersisa dari 14 hari waiting period yang berakhir tanggal 14 April.
Aksi di hari kedua ini dimulai pukul 7 pagi. Adalah Marlon Gerber, juara Coca Cola ISC 2011 yang mendapat giliran pertama dan memulai debut tahun 2012 ini dengan menang mudah di Heat 1 babak 3. Kemudian ia kembali memenangkan pertarungan man-on-man di heat babak 4 melawan Gazali Hamzah untuk membawanya ke perempat final, dimana ia akan melawan surfer muda tangguh yang duduk di peringkat 12, Darmaputra Tonjo.
Sesaat setelah kemenangannya di Heat babak 4, Gerber dimintai pendapatnya tentang bagaimana start musim tahun ini dan menjawab,” Saya benar-benar menunggu musim tahun ini, tapi jujur saja kali ini saya merasakan ada sedikit tekanan dibandingkan dengan tahun lalu. Tentunya saya berkomitmen untuk kembali jadi juara tahun ini, jadi mungkin yang saya bakal lakukan adalah berpikir untuk beberapa hal dan sedikit lebih relaks. Tapi di sisi lain saya juga merasa nyaman, menyadari bahwa nama saya sudah pernah ada di tropi.
Sewaktu ditanya tentang kompetisi favoritnya di musim tahun ini, ia berujar,” tidak ada yang spesial, saya menyukai semua kompetisi. Lagian, maksud dan tujuannya juga sama saja kan? Surfing semaksimal mungkin dan menangkan kompetisinya! Buat saya, backside maupun frontside itu sama saja, tapi saat kamu dapet ombak kayak di Macaroni saya bakalan sangat antusias karena saya suka banget sama ombak itu. Saya sudah surfing di ombak itu sejak saya umur 18. Tapi ngomong-ngomong, senang rasanya melihat skedul tahun ini lebih balance dengan right, left juga peak. Dari situ saya sangat antusias sekali bertanding di kompetisi-kompetisi ISC. Saya sekarang punya board baru dari YU, sponsor papan saya yang baru, dan mereka menciptakannya dengan luar biasa. Dengan semua itu, saya siap bertarung tahun ini.
Gerber akan berhadapan dengan surfer muda berbakat Darmaputra Tonjo di perempat final 1, dimana pertarungan ini akan menjadi pertarungan sengit karena seperti yang kita ketahui Tonjo menjadi headline di kalangan surfing internasional saat kontes Oakley World Pro Junior 2011 tahun lalu, dimana sebagai pemegang wildcard ia menumbangkan surfer junior no. 2 dunia Nat Young dan setelahnya ia menaklukkan surfer junior no 1 dunia, Jack Freestone.
Satu lagi pertarungan terbesar hari ini yaitu saat Heat 8 babak 3, dimana para goofyfooter terbaik Bali yaitu Garut Widiarta, Made “Bol” Adi Putra, dan Raditya Rondi dan salah satu goofyfooter terbaik dari Jawa Barat, Cimaja, Asep Pahruroji semuanya bertarung dalam satu heat. “Ini heat yang gila,” kata Widiarta setelah memenangkan heat. “Saya seperti tidak percaya saat melihat heat draw-nya. Kita, surfer-surfer Bali berasal dari keluarga yang sama dan Asep dari Cimaja surfing di Cimaja setiap harinya, dimana spot kanannya hampir serupa seperti Canggu. Tentunya saya ngga nyangka bisa menang. Setelah ini, saya akan bertarung melawan Mus (Mustofa Jeksen) di perempat final. Kembali, saya akan melawan goofyfooter yang lain. Prestasi saya tahun lalu sungguh kurang bagus, jadi saya harap tahun ini keberuntungan ada di pihak saya untuk bisa masuk ke babak final, dan sampai menang.”
