Roxy’s Global Girls Surfing Contest in Bali

Roxy’s Global “Let The Sea Set You Free” Contest Offers the Chance for Indonesian Girls to Live the Roxy Girl Dream
Man is that a sight for sore eyes!
14 March 2012, Bali-Indonesia:  As part of the global Roxy “Let The Sea Set You Free” contest, Roxy Indonesia is excited to invite Indonesian girls between the ages of 18 to 28 who wish to experience a once-in-a lifetime opportunity to live the life of a Roxy girl to submit their applications from now until April 8th, 2012.

It’s as easy as going to www.facebook.com/roxy.id or www.roxy.com/seaforyourself and submitting 2 or 3 photos and a short 150-word (max) essay or a short video telling describing what makes you a Roxy girl.

Ultimately, Roxy is looking for three of the most intriguing, fun, engaging, daring and media savvy girls in the world to experience this life-changing adventure that includes:
·     A trip to Biarritz, France for the Roxy Pro Surf Competition (departing on July 9, 2012 and returning on July 16, 2012. Airfare and hotel accommodation is included.)
·     Meet the Roxy pro athletes
·     Receive up to $5,000 USD
·     Be outfitted in head-to-toe Roxy products
·     Host Roxy video segments as well as be a face and voice for Roxy
·     Learn to surf in some of the best waves in the world
·     Get to know the Roxy Design Team
·     Jet set on surprise trip #2 (it's amazing!) – airfare and hotel accommodations included

The Indonesian Roxy winner also receive a prestigious prize package including a limited edition Roxy Yamaha Fino motorbike, become the Roxy Indonesia Brand Ambassador, enjoy a 4 day and 3 night holiday in Bali, and get loads of amazing Roxy products.

The contest ends on June 15th, 2012, when Roxy will announce the three girls chosen to live the life of a Roxy girl. The fans (you!) and the Roxy judging panel will ultimately select the three winners. The Roxy judging panel consists of one Roxy marketing official per region and one Roxy Pro Surfer.

And what exactly is a Roxy Girl?  “Roxy girls are unmatched. Full of energy and a genuine love for the world, we radiate optimism and warmth. We are kind-hearted, generous, and love to have fun. We dream big. We are always up for a challenge and down for a good adventure. We dare to be more. Do you?”

According to Holly Monkman, Marketing Executive for SEA, it’s not a requirement that the potential candidate already know how to surf.  “What is most important in being the ideal candidate is your spirit and attitude.  I suggest that the girls take a look at our website and our Facebook pages to view the photos and videos of our Roxy girls in order to get the real feeling of what the life of a Roxy girl is all about. I’m really looking forward to seeing some great submissions here in Indonesia, via our website and at the audition coming up in Bali on March 31st,” Monkman said.

For the Bali audition, Roxy has prepared a full day of activities on Saturday March 31st, starting with their “Roxy Let The Sea Set You Free Surfing Day” on Legian Beach in front of the Quiksilver surf School from 10 am -1 pm. Roxy team rider Gemala Hanafiah will be there to teach the girls how to surf, and in addition to free surfing lessons there will be a mini Roxy pop-up store where girls can shop for bikini’s sandals, hats, T-shirts, and other great Roxy beachwear.

Later that the afternoon starting at 6 pm, the Roxy “Let The Sea Set You Free Party With Surfer Girl” will go down at the Surfer Girl Store on Jalan Legian in Kuta.  The fun and good times will include the auditions for the Roxy “Let The Sea Set You Free” program, a Meet and Greet with Indonesian Roxy girl Gemala Hanafiah, a Make Up and Nail Session by Etude, live acoustic music, live mannequins showing off the latest Roxy fashions, and a chance to win a Roxy Yamaha Fino and other Roxy goodies just for entering the contest or spend minimum Rp 499K on all Roxy products to enter Yamaha lucky draw.

This special audition is sponsored by Yamaha Mio Fino, Quiksilver Surf School, Surfer Girl, Etude and Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia with media partners Cosmo Girl!, GADIS and Cita Cinta magazine.

INDONESIAN SURFING SENSATION "ONEY" ANWAR RE-SIGNS WITH RIP CURL FOR 5 YEARS

Bali, Indonesia – Rip Curl SEA is proud to announce the re-signing of Indonesian surfing prodigy Oney Anwar to a new five-year contract.

Born and raised in the remote jungle village of Lakey Peak, Sumbawa, Anwar (18) has been a Rip Curl team rider for over eight years. After winning nearly every Indonesian youth surfing contest as a grom, Anwar has rapidly emerged as one of Asia’s brightest surf stars.

“I want to thank Rip Curl for supporting me in my surfing career and my education too,” Anwar said. “I’ve been with Rip Curl since I was ten years old and the company has been a big part of my life. I’m stoked they will continue to be by my side in the future.”

With the support of Rip Curl, Anwar is currently living on Australia’s Gold Coast, where he is a senior at Palm Beach Currumbin High School. Since 2007, Anwar has been working towards his high school diploma in Australia and training with some of the best coaches in surfing as part of Rip Curl’s International Grommet Development Program.

In 2010, Anwar became the first-ever Indonesian surfer to win an ASP Pro Jr. event when he claimed the Dripping Wet Pro Junior at South Curl Curl Beach on Sydney’s northern beaches. He followed it up with a starring role in Rip Curl’s landmark Seven Ghosts river surfing expedition.

“In 2012 I want to finish high school and make it into the top five of the Australian Pro Junior series so I can compete at the World Juniors,” Anwar said.

Many believe Anwar has the potential to become the first surfer from Indonesia to qualify for the Association of Surfing Professionals elite World Tour. James Hendy, Southeast Asia Marketing Manager for Rip Curl, shares that belief.

“Oney is fully a part of the Rip Curl family,” Hendy said. “He’s been with us since he was little grom surfing on broken surfboards in Lakey Peak. We are proud to have helped Oney with his schooling in Australia for the past five years, and are excited to help him take his surfing career to the next level in the future.”

Taiwan Junior Surf Champion Rory Macdonald Signs with Quiksilver

Taipei, Taiwan (February 22, 2012) — Quiksilver, the world’s leading surf wear and boardriding company, is proud to announce the signing of a 3 year contract with 12 year old junior surf champion Rory Macdonald from Taiwan.
Born and raised in Taiwan’s southern town of Kenting, Rory was introduced to surfing by his father at the age of 3. His surfing talent and trilingual language abilities (Mandarin, Taiwanese & English) quickly established him as the grommet to watch on the island. Competing in local contests since the age of 6, he is a well known face around the resort town. “I like surfing in Kenting; the waves are different every time but I still surf it no matter what. It’s all good practice,” Rory said.
Since 2010, Rory has won 8 championships including 4 titles in Junior Short Board and 4 titles in Men’s Short Board divisions; becoming one of the most accomplished young surfers in Taiwan. His recent performances at the 2011 Quiksilver ASC Taitung County International Surf Challenge and the 2012 Riyuewan Open in Hainan, China, also proved his tremendous potential to the international surfing community.
“Having followed Rory’s progress over the last few years it is fantastic to now welcome him to the Quiksilver family. Rory rips and is blessed with a heap of natural talent. There is no doubt that he will be a big part of the surfing future of Taiwan”, said Quiksilver Taiwan’s General Manager Clayton Wholley.
As part of his sponsorship agreement, Rory will travel overseas to numerous international contests this year – the first being the Asian Surfing Championship sanctioned Oakley Pro 2012, to be held at Canggu in Bali this April.
When asked how he felt about joining Quiksilver, Rory said “I’d be stoked to be able to become a pro surfer, and cannot wait to travel and surf around the world…. I want to keep challenging myself and improving.”
Tipi Jabrik, the President Director of the ASC said, “Rory is one of Taiwan’s biggest hopes for the sport, as he’s got both talent and personality, so he will be a great asset for Quiksilver.”

Stay tuned to news and updates about Rory Macdonald on Quiksilver Taiwan ‘s website: www.quiksilver.tw or visit facebook site at www.facebook.com/QuiksilverRoxyTaiwan.

Raditya Rondi Wins Billabong Cherating Pro 2011

Raditya Rondi Wins Billabong Cherating Pro 2011 - Becomes First ASC Surfing Champion

12 December 2011 – Cherating, Malaysia: In an exciting finale to the Billabong Cherating Pro 2011, Indonesia’s Raditya Rondi dominated both the relentlessly pounding South China Sea waves and his fellow finalists to take the Men’s Open Division victory yesterday at Cherating Point in East Malaysia.  With this being the final event of the inaugural 2011 Asian Surfing Championship Tour season, Rondi also claims the title of first Asian Surfing Champion, a historic milestone in Asian surfing.

It was a battle not only against his competitors but also against the elements, as the further increase in swell from the previous day had the waves in the 3-4 foot range with a raging rip current making paddling against it all but impossible.  After catching a wave, the surfers would usually get washed half a kilometer or more in a matter of minutes, and have to paddle in to the beach and then run back up to the point to jump in again.  It was a test of strength and endurance as well as surfing ability, and after the final Rondi said jokingly, “Maybe that gave me an edge. I was the youngest guy in the finals, and maybe the most fit, so I still had some reserve power that maybe they didn’t, which got me in position to get the best waves.”

Always modest, Rondi played down the fact that he absolutely ripped apart his very first wave to post the highest single wave score of the day, 7 points out of a possible 10, which had the crowd on the beach cheering wildly.  He went on to add another good score halfway through the final to clinch his hold on first place and leave the runner up spot to Teiki Balian from France, third place to Tipi Jabrik from Indonesia, and fourth place to Kuo Heng Liang of Taiwan.

Rondi was clearly ecstatic about not only his win but becoming the first ASC Champion, saying “This is a really a great moment for me, to be the first ever Asian Surfing Champion, and I’ll remember it forever.  Back home in Indonesia, it was Pepen Hendrik that was the first Indonesian Surfing Champion back in 2004, and now its 2011 and I’m the first ASC Champion.  I’m so stoked right now, and feel so honored.”  When asked about his experience this year surfing on the ASC Tour he replied, “I’ve had so much fun, traveling to different parts of Asia, making new friends, seeing new places, and surfing fun waves.  I really think it’s a great idea and really important to surfing.  It gets us out of our usual places and helps us improve our surfing.  I’m looking forward to next year already!”

In the Women’s Division final, it was 4-time Indonesian Women’s Surfing Champion Yasnyiar “Bonne” Gea who took the win in the final minutes over 13 year old Annissa Flynn from Thailand, who seemed to have the victory in hand until Gea scored big points for her now patented layback maneuver, her second of the final, which turned the win over to Gea.  Gea also claimed her spot in history today, becoming Asia’s first Women’s Champion.  “I’m so happy to both win today and to be the Asian Women’s Champion,” she said.  “I hope I can be a good example for other women to follow, so we can get more girls out surfing together.”

In the Master’s Division it was Aril Zainal whose local knowledge got him the best waves and the top scores, as he seemed to know just where each section was and how to hit it for maximum points.  He was clearly worn out from the effort of surfing three heats, but stoked on his victory, saying with a laugh, “I’m so tired I can barely carry my board back, and I’m so glad its over.  There is no way I could go out for another heat after this!”

The Billabong Cherating Pro 2011 was a very successful event, drawing almost 70 men and women contestants from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Japan, the Maldives, Taiwan, France, Denmark, Australia, and Switzerland to compete for cash, products, prestige, and fun in this 3 star Asian Surfing Championship sanctioned event, the 8th and last stop on the 2011 ASC tour.

Finalists in the Men’s and Women’s Divisions received cash, a Nixon watch, and Von Zipper sunglasses, and the Master’s finalists received product vouchers and the winner receiving a Nixon watch.

Billabong Asia’s Brand Manager Peter Thew was on hand to join in the fun over the weekend, and had this to say after the awards presentation:  “It’s always good times for us here at Cherating, and it was exciting to come back again this year.  This is a great grassroots event and with the ASC coming in this year there are a bunch of new countries seeing Malaysia surf for the first time.  Hopefully we can continue to grow this event but still keep it true to its grassroots core, helping to nurture and build the Malaysian surfing community.  Looking forward to coming back next year to do it again!”

The Billabong Cherating Pro 2011 was sponsored by Tourism Pahang, Satu Suku Surf, Billabong Asia, Nixon, and Von Zipper with media support from Surfersvillage.com, Lines Magazine, Thai Surfrider Magazine, SurfTime Magazine, Baliwaves.com and RVM, and sanctioned by the Asian Surfing Championship Tour.
