Whores & Cigars in Surabaya Indonesia

Repentant commercial sex workers restart life

Some commercial sex workers at the Dupak Bangunsari red-light district in Surabaya have called an end to their profession and decided to return home to start new lives.

Nineteen of them had by then been given training in various skills with respect to their preferences. They were each given working equipment and capital of Rp 3 million (US$333) to begin efforts to earn a new living.
Among them was Sri Anjarwati, 46, from nearby Mojokerto. She had been working as a prostitute for
five years. She said she had started a new livelihood as a food vendor.

“I used the Rp 3 million as start-up capital and I run the business with my younger sister,” said Sri, who claimed to have fallen into the world of prostitution after she was betrayed by her husband.
Asvia, 25, said she was determined to leave the red-light life after joining the training provided by the provincial administration and receiving working capital to run an eatery. “I will get married this month. A man is willing to accept me as I am,” Asvia told reporters on the sidelines of a ceremony held by the East Java provincial administration and the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) to officially send the former sex workers home over the weekend.

They come from Sidoarjo, Malang, Blitar, Lamongan, Mojokerto, Jombang, Kediri, Jember, Pati, Jepara, Sumbawa and Surabaya.

The ceremony last week was the fifth held thus far over the past five years. Dupak Bangunsari was known as the largest red-light district in the Southeast Asian region in the 1980s, before the infamous Dolly red-light district, also in Surabaya, gained its notoriety. Dupak once accommodated some 3,000 prostitutes and 350 pimps.

MUI’s East Java branch chairman Abdussomad Buchori said that sending home prostitutes and pimps was part of serious efforts by both the council and the provincial administration in closing down the six red-light districts in Surabaya. East Java, which was home to 47 red-light districts spread across its regencies and municipalities.

“There are now 43 districts left, as four have recently been closed down,” said Abdussomad, adding that of the four, three were in Malang and one was in Blitar.

The head of the provincial administration’s people’s welfare bureau, Indra Maulana, said that the administration was very serious about closing down all red-light districts in the region. This, he said, was because the people living nearby could not accept such behavior in their respective neighborhoods.
“We will do so by using persuasive and conducive approaches that are non-confrontational. We prioritize the role of local preachers and ulema to bring them back to the right path,” Indra said.
He said closed red-light districts would be tightly monitored in case pimps tried to re-open their businesses. “If so, they will be charged under the law on human trafficking.”

Indra also said that local people who previously benefitted by the economic spillover from prostitution businesses would also be given training to help them move forward.

East Java Governor Soekarwo had previously promised an “unlimited budget” to support any regencies or municipalities in the province pursuing programs to close prostitution districts in their respective
jurisdictions.

With the remaining prostitution areas, East Java is presently home to more 7,000 prostitutes and over 1,000 pimps. Of them, some 30 percent are operating in the provincial capital of Surabaya.

“East Java does not tolerate immoral acts, but we do not just evict them. We will give them skills and working capital,” Soekarwo said.

Indonesian Immigration Law still up in the air

Last April there was much excitement about the new immigration law which was going to grant permanent residency and the right to work for foreigners married to Indonesian citizens. The law hasn't official been activated but there has been some talk about foreigners who have managed to get it done in Jakarta. Here's a look at the new rules.

Q:  What happens if a mixed marriage couple, who have been married for more than 5 years and live abroad, want to return to live in Indonesia?
A:  The foreign spouse should enter Indonesia on a Visa Tinggal Terbatas (Temporary Stay Visa). Once in Indonesia, she/he can apply for Izin Tinggal Tetap (ITAP = Permanent Residence Permit, or PR).

Q:  What happens if a mixed marriage couple have just got married abroad and want to live in Indonesia?
A:  The foreign spouse should enter Indonesia on a Visa Tinggal Terbatas. After getting an Entry Stamp (Tanda Masuk), they must  apply to the local Immigration Office for Izin Tinggal Terbatas (ITAS = Temporary Residence Permit).  The ITAS is valid for 2 years and can then be converted to ITAP. To get the ITAP, the foreign spouse must also sign a Declaration of Integration.

Q:  Can a foreign spouse who has an ITAP due to being in a mixed marriage, work in Indonesia?
A:  Yes.

Q:  What happens if the child of a mixed marriage, who has foreign citizenship and lives abroad, wants to live in Indonesia?
A:   She/he should enter Indonesia on a Visa Tinggal Terbatas. Once in Indonesia, they can immediately apply for an ITAP.

Q:  What happens if the child of a mixed marriage, who lives in Indonesia, chooses her/his foreign citizenship upon reaching the age of 18?
A:  She/he can get an ITAP immediately.

Q:  What happens in the case of the foreign spouse in a mixed marriage who has been married for more than 2 years and is living in Indonesia?
A:  She/he can get an ITAP immediately.

Q:  What happens if the couple divorce?
A:  A mixed marriage ITAP will not be cancelled due to divorce if the couple has been married for 10 years or more.

Q:  What happens if the Indonesian spouse dies?
A:  A mixed marriage ITAP will not be cancelled due to the death of the Indonesian spouse.

Q:  Do ITAP holders need a sponsor?
A:  People holding an ITAP due to being in a mixed marriage do not need a sponsor.

Q:  Does the mixed marriage ITAP have to be renewed?
A:  ITAP holders must report to the Immigration Office every 5 years. There is no charge for this.

Q:  Is a re-entry permit still needed with an ITAP?
A:  Yes. ITAP holders can get a multiple re-entry permit that is valid for 2 years.

Q:  How long can an ITAP holder stay away from Indonesia without losing their ITAP?
A:  The ITAP will be cancelled if the holder is away from Indonesia for more than 1 year, or if they do not intend to return to Indonesia.

House repairs in Bali

One Bali expat recently woke up to find that the water in his Seminyak house was not working. What could be the problem? This particular house had a large water-tower where water was pumped to create pressure. The electric pump appeared to be working, water could be heard sloshing, but none came out of the taps. After consulting the Balinese owner, the expat agreed to wait for some Javanese 'tukan' (workers) to arrive and look for the source of the problem. The house owner suggested that the expat would agree to pay for all the costs of this investigation and subsequent repair.

Here is the thing about renting in Bali. We know that a renter is only liable for damages to the property, not long term repairs. This is often stated in the contract too, but in situations where repairs are actually needed this fact often gets 'misunderstood'.

On this occasion the expat was able to politely explain that if he 'broke' the water system he would pay for repairs, but if the water system was merely old then 'bapak' (the older gentleman) would be liable. It all ended well and the 'tukan' earned some extra money fixing an old decaying water system.

14 year old Australian boy arrested for marijuana possession

As reported in many major media outlets a 14 year old Australian boy has been arrested for possession of marijuana. Everyone from Kevin Rudd to the Australian Ambassador has been scrambling to the boy's defense. How can this happen? He was so nice, he's so young, it must be a mistake...etc. What no one has asked and probably will not ask is what was the little fuckwit doing buying drugs?

According to reports he was out getting a massage and thought it a good idea to purchase the drugs offered to him by a stranger. Yes you have to feel sorry for anyone being so obviously set up, but why bring it on yourself?

Australian media will make a big song and dance about this, 'poor us, poor us, poor fucking us'.  A 'deal' will by done (poor mum & dad who have just lost their mortgage) and little Johnny fuckwit can go back to dipshitville and play footie with his maties again.

Warung Ocha - A Seminyak success story

A few years ago there existed a small streetside warung serving basic Indonesian food. Set in the heart of Seminyak Warung Roadkill had an ear-catching name and handy location. However it was tiny and eventually went out of business.

Warung Roadkill became Warung Ocha, the same menu continued with a few tasty add-ons such as roast chicken and potatoes in marinara sauce. Expansion followed  into the back area, then along the street, then back again. Warung Ocha now has a good menu with some excellent items on.  One of the winners is grilled tuna with potato/marinana and salad for 38,000rp.

Warung Ocha has free wi-fi, is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, is a great place to people watch and a cozy place to sit.

Well done to Warung Ocha for continuing to improve and add value to a cool place.

Tuesday night outside JP's Warung was better than the runway at the Miss Universe contest. Hotties from Russia, China, Indonesia and a dozen other places arrived on foot, by taxi and motorbike for a DJ performance.
