Full Day of Non-Stop Action on Day Two of Rip Curl Pro Terengganu

1 December 2012, Terengganu-Malaysia: Day of Rip Curl Pro Terengganu got off to a slow start this morning due to a rain storm drenching the beach for about two hours, delaying the start of competition from the planned 7:30 am kickoff time to just after 9:30, when the first heat of the Men’s Open Round 2 paddled out to do battle.

The weather rapidly improved and the sun broke out, heating things up on the beach while the action in the water also got hot and heavy, as Asia’s top surfers battled it out to advance and get one stop closer to tomorrow’s final.

Indonesia's Garut Widiarta posted the day’s highest single wave score in his Round 2 heat, a 7.5 (out of a possible 10 points) for a backside aerial 360, to advance to a quarterfinal berth tomorrow.  Other standouts were Marlon Gerber and Darmaputra Tonjo, whose expertise in aerial maneuvers in the smallish 1-2 foot waves got them big scores from the judging panel.

The 16 Women’s Division contestants were next out, with 5-time and current Indonesian champion Yasnyiar “Bonne” Gea, current Asian women’s champ Annissa Flynn (THD), Diah Rayahu (IDN) and Jessie Hong (TWN) all winning their heats to advance to the semifinals.

The Master’s Division and Longboard Division also were run today, setting up for the semifinals tomorrow as well.

During the full day of surfing there was also a special board shaping demonstration by Australia’s Darren Handley, who is the personal shaper for world champion surfers Stephanie Gilmore and Mick Fanning, surfboard art painting by Laura Pabst de Cesar, a poster signing session by the Rip Curl Asia surf team and Darren Handley, lots of free Fanta and Nestle’s ice cream, surf lessons and games and all manner of fun in the sun.

The quarterfinals of the Men's Open will start off first thing tomorrow morning with a stacked heat of top Indonesian surfers in Quarterfinal 1, as 2012 Indonesian and Asian champion Raditya Rondi takes on fellow Indonesians Garut Widiarta, Darmaputra Tonjo, and Devis Ratif, which should get the day off to another blazing start the final day of action at the Rip Curl Pro Terengganu where champions will be crowned in all divisions at the close of the day.

Round 1 of Mens Open and Bodyboard Divisions Completed on Day One of Rip Curl Pro Terengganu

30 November 2012, Terengganu-Malaysia: Day One of the Rip Curl Pro Terengganu got off to an exciting start this morning as Terengganu’s local dignitaries and event sponsors sounded off air horns to officially open the event at 10:30 am.

The Round 1 competitors in the Men’s Open were the first to see action in the 2-3 foot waves, with the mild weather and minimal winds making for perfect conditions for surfers and spectators alike, with many of Malaysia’s surfing fans heading down to the beach to get their weekend started.  In the Terengganu area, their weekend consists of Friday and Saturday due to their Muslim religion, which necessitates a mid day break for prayers each day as well.

After the mid day break, the 26 bodyboarders from Malaysia, the Maldives, and Japan had their chance to compete, while some of the other competitors skated on the slalom course and free surfed down the beach, and the spectators had a chance to take surf lessons with Jonathan Morrison-Deaker from the Rip Curl School of Surf, play games at the Fanta and Rip Curl booths, get their board painted by surfboard artist Laura Mannheim, eat tons of Nestle ice cream, and just relax and watch the action going down in the water.
Tomorrow will see Round 2 of the Men’s Open hit the water first thing at 7:30 am, in what promises to be a very full day of competitive action.  If you are anywhere near Terengganu, come on down to the beach and enjoy the show!

6-Star ASC Rip Curl Pro Terengganu is Ready for Asia’s Best Surfers – Action Begins Tomorrow

6-Star ASC Rip Curl Pro Terengganu is Ready for Asia’s Best Surfers – Action Begins Tomorrow

29 November 2012, Terengganu-Malaysia:  After several days of preparation the contest venue of Batu Buruk Beach in Terengganu is ready to host the first ever 6-star Asian Surfing Championship surfing competition in Malaysia, the Rip Curl Pro Terengganu, which will kick off tomorrow November 30 at approximately 10 am.

In conjunction with the government of Terengganu, Rip Curl Malaysia is proud to be the first surf brand in Malaysia to sponsor a 6-star rated ASC surfing competition with total prize money of 36,500 MYR (over $12,000 USD) across five surfing divisions; Men’s, Women’s, Longboard, Masters, and Bodyboard, plus a Skateboard Slalom Race and various specialty awards such as “Best Malaysian Surfer” and “Best Wipeout” to name a few.  In addition there will also be 22,500 MYR ($7,500 USD) worth of Rip Curl products given out to the finalists.

With big prize money and valuable ASC championship points on offer, the Rip Curl Pro Terengganu has drawn the Asian region’s best professional surfers from Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan, and the Maldives, as well as surfers from Japan, Singapore, and France.

Bali’s Mega Semadhi arrived last night and wasted no time in getting out to test the waters this morning.  “It was small but fun out there,” said Semadhi, who in September won the last event of the 2012 ASC season in Phuket, Thailand. “It’s my first time to come to Malaysia and I’m looking forward to doing well in the competition.  I’m hoping the waves get a bit bigger but even if it stays like this it will be ok, as I enjoy surfing in anything.  I’m confidant I can do well here and hoping I can win this event.”

Dede Suryana from West Java, Indonesia was the winner of the Open Division at last year’s ASC sanctioned event held here in Terengganu, and he is happy to be back to defend his title.  “It’s going to be pretty competitive this year, with more guys from Indo here, guys from Thailand and from the Maldives too,” said Suryana.  “Plus the locals have improved a lot so it’s not going to be easy. Hopefully I can win it again.”

The event will kick off tomorrow morning at around 9:30 after allowing for any last minute registrations, and according to Contest Director Bryan Ng it may be the Longboard or Bodyboard Divisions that will be first out, depending of course upon the morning’s conditions.

The swell is forecast to increase slightly and remain fairly constant at 2-3 feet (.5 to 1.0 meter) through the weekend, with favorable winds and moderate weather conditions, setting up for a fun weekend of surfing and hanging out on one of Malaysia’s cleanest and whitest stretches of beachbreak.

The Rip Curl Pro Terengganu 2012 is sponsored and supported by the State Government of Terengganu, Rip Curl Malaysia, EC Extreme, the Ministry of Tourism Terengganu Office, and Tourism Malaysia, and co-sponsored by Fanta, Nestle Drumstick and Sunplay with Suria FM as media partner.
