This year has started off well with someone in the Indonesian government coming to his senses and deciding not to enforce the latest Customs directive of charging Bali visitors a tax on personal items.
The new law was announced in early December and stated that all passengers arriving in Indonesia will be allowed a $250 dollar limit on personal items, the excess being charged a 20% duty. The tourism industry is a $4 billion a year earner. A great way to kill off that industry is to harass visitors by charging them duty on personal items such as jewelry, cameras, laptops and iPhones. Imagine a newlywed couple, he sporting his new laptop and her the diamond wedding ring she has just received. If the laptop cost $1,000 and the ring $5,000 those 2 people are $5,500 over the limit and would be liable for a fine of $1,100….thanks for choosing Bali for your honeymoon!
Thankfully this kind of scenario, plus the unimaginable lines at Customs (searching bags, people haggling for a lower price) will not happen. So once again children, Bali is the perfect holiday playground you all have been dreaming of.
