SURFER GIRL BEACH CLEAN UP GOES TO KARANG ASEM

In line with its vision to create positive difference through everything that they do, Surfer Girl, the happiest girls brand in the world, partnered with the worldwide traveler organization, CouchSurfing held beach clean-up at the pristine beach of Blue Lagoon and Bias Tugel in Karangasem Bali on Sunday 21 October 2012 as part of CouchSurfing Indonesia Festive 2012.

This year, the annual CouchSurfing Indonesia Festive comes with the tagline NACULA – Nature creates culture and adventures which is strongly aligned with Surfer Girl’s long-term commitment to environmental preservation.

Around hundred of participants of Surfer Girl staffs, local and international CouchSurfers, VW Bali Community and surrounding local communities cleaned every inch of the beaches. Presentation was also given by Surfer Girl Green Practices’ Staff to inform the audiences on the danger of rubbish littering to the ocean.

Being the fun brand, the day is also filled with many fun activities from Sumo wrestling in giant costumes, to hula-hoop competition where all travelers, staffs and local communities alike mingled in the joyful atmosphere. As everyone enthusiastically set off to clean the beach to make sure every pieces of rubbish were gathered, the local students from SDN 1 and SDN 2 Padang Bai showcased their artistic skills in the fun drawing contest on the rubbish bins. The bins were then handed to the Chief of the Village Padang Bai as a manifestation of Surfer Girl’s its long-term commitment to environmental protection. The bins are going to be placed in 6 spots across Blue Lagoon and Bias Tugel beach to encourage positive actions by the communities and visitors to keep the beach clean in the long run.

The event has not only come with strong environmental messages, it was also served as a channel to introduce the great Indonesian culture and hospitality with was much appreciated by global travelers who came to the event.

Rip Curl Malaysia Announces the 6-Star ASC Sanctioned Rip Curl Pro Terengganu for November 30-Dec 2, 2012

17 October 2012, Kuala Lumpur-Malaysia:  At a press conference in front of the Rip Curl store in the Utama Mall in Kuala Lumpur on October 15, Rip Curl Malaysia officially announced the dates for the first ever 6-star Asian Surfing Championship surfing competition in Malaysia, the Rip Curl Pro Terengganu, which will take place at Batu Burok Beach in Terengganu from November 30-December 2^nd, 2012.

In conjunction with the government of Terengganu, Rip Curl Malaysia is proud to be the first surf brand in Malaysia to sponsor a 6-star rated ASC surfing competition with total prize money of 36,500 MYR (over $12,000 USD) across five surfing divisions; Men’s, Women’s, Longboard, Masters, and Bodyboard, plus a Skateboard Slalom Race and various specialty awards such as “Best Malaysian Surfer” and “Best Surf Wipout” to name but a few.  In addition there will also be 22,500 MYR ($7,500 USD) worth of Rip Curl products given out to the finalists.

In the ASC tour system, events are rated from 1 to 6 stars according to the total prize money available in the Men’s Open Division, with 6 being the second highest rating with a total prize purse of $4,000 USD. The highest rating the Ultima, which boasts a total prize purse of  $5,500 USD, and according to Mr. En Nik Mohd Syahrom from the State Government of Terengganu, the event will be upgraded to an Ultima level next year.

“After the success of last year’s event in Terangganu, we decided this year to up the prize money to the six star level,” said Mr. Syahrom who is the Manager of Promotion and Events for the Terengganu government.  “And have every intention of upgrading it to the highest level, an Ultima event, next year,” he said, which drew loud cheers from the crowd.

With big prize money and valuable ASC championship points on offer, the Rip Curl Pro Terengganu will draw the Asian region’s best professional surfers from Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan, Japan, Singapore and the Philippines, as well as from other countries including Australia, the USA, and France.

2012 ASC Men’s Open Champion Raditya Rondi from Indonesia is excited about coming back to Malaysia and competing in the Rip Curl Pro Terengganu, saying “I’ve competed in events in Malaysia every year for the last four years and always enjoy the monsoon season so I can go back there to surf, compete, see my friends, and have a great time.  With this year’s event having more prize money and points, I’m super stoked on getting a chance to come back, and hopefully I can win the event this year!”

Rip Curl SEA Marketing Manager James Hendy flew up from Bali to attend the press conference and to personally thank Jon Lee from Rip Curl Malaysia, Bryan Ng as the event organizer, and Mr. Syahrom from the Terengganu State Government for initiating and supporting the event, saying, “On behalf of Rip Curl I’d like to say that I’m really stoked to see such a great event being created here in Malaysia, and I’d like to say a special thanks to Jon and his crew here at Rip Curl Malaysia, to Mr. Syahrom and the government of Terengganu for their support, and to Bryan Ng for putting in so much time to organize what is promises to be the best most exciting surfing event ever held in Malaysia. Also coming from Bali to attend the press conference was Tim Hain from the ASC, who voiced how delighted he was at how the sport of surfing was progressing in Malaysia.  “I’m very proud of Bryan and the core crew of Malaysian surfers that have ultimately made an event like this possible with their hard work and dedication, as well thankful to the surf brands like Rip Curl that are supporting them and believing in all the positive benefits that the sport of surfing brings to a community. My first trip to Malaysia for a surf contest was in 2008, and I’ve been coming back each year since, and its like a dream come true to have a 6 star ASC event this year.  I’m really excited about the event, and so proud of the surf community here in Malaysia.”

The press conference also included a fashion show with the latest collection of sporty Rip Curl products for men and women being shown off by models from the Amber Chia Academy, and the official signing of Rip Curl Malaysia’s surf team members.

Bryan Ng was officially signed as Rip Curl’s Brand Ambassador for Malaysia, Brenda Lee was signed up as Rip Curl Malaysia’s newest surf team member, and Mohd “Semmy” Suhaimi from Cherating renewed his surfing contract for yet another year.

After a photo session on the podium, the surfers and management of Rip Curl Malaysia together with Tim Hain from the ASC took to the stage and answered questions from the various invited media, then called it a wrap for the afternoon.

Indonesia’s Oney Anwar Narrowly Defeated by USA’s Conner Coffin in Round 3 of the Oakley ASP World Pro Junior Championships Bali

12 October 2012, Kuta-Bali:  Indonesian wildcard and rising star Hairil “Oney” Anwar was narrowly defeated today in Round 3 by Connor Coffin from the USA, ending his run for a world championship win at the Oakley ASP World Pro Junior Championships being held in Gianyar at Keramas Beach.

Anwar was the first surfer to catch a wave in the 30 minute heat, but failed to complete his air-reverse attempt, and Coffin took advantage of it by tearing apart a perfect set wave and posting the highest score of the heat, 7.83 points out of a possible 10.

Coffin and Anwar have very different styles, with Anwar the aerial surfer and Conner the power surfer, so Anwar fought back completing his next air-reverse and capping it with a deep gouging turn, earning him a score of  7.67.

Both surfers put on a great show for the fans on the beach, but Coffin seemed to have knack for choosing the best waves that fit his surfing style while Oney kept searching for the perfect wave that would allow him to rip off a massive score and get the lead.

Coffin posted another wave for 7.70 points and Anwar answered back with a 6.27, which still left him needing a score of 7.86 to take the lead, but time ran out and thus ended Anwar’s chance to advance into the 4^th round and beyond.  Final score was Coffin with 15.53 points (out of a possible 20) and Anwar with 13.94.

“Against Conner I knew I had to go big,” said Anwar after the heat.  “I was looking for a wave to do some turns as well as airs, but I didn’t find it.  I was feeling confident because I knew the conditions favored doing airs, and Conner doesn’t do them really.  So I knew I had a good chance to win the heat, but in the end I couldn’t find the right waves and Conner did.”

When asked what his biggest take away was from the experience he replied, “I just need to be more patient and wait for the right wave.  I kept looking for a turn wave but only saw air section waves (laughing).”  

Anwar goes home with $1,200 USD and the valuable experience of competing in his first ASP World Championship event, and with this young man’s potential it certainly not going to be his last.

James Hendy (from his sponsor Rip Curl) was on hand to watch the heat and to cheer Oney on, and said afterwards, “I think Oney was a little bit unlucky because the very low tide played a bit of a factor in him not being able to complete that one air on the inside section, due to the reef being exposed there.  With a higher tide he probably could have ridden out of those last two airs and scored the points he needed and won the heat.  But in the end it’s good for his confidence, being up against one of the best pro juniors in the world and giving it such a good effort.  Quite an achievement for anyone, never mind a kid from Lakey Peak, Sumbawa.  I’m really proud of him, for sure.”

 Anwar was the only Indonesian to receive an ASP wildcard, due to his being ranked 9^th on the ASP Australian Pro Junior tour, whereas his compatriots brother Gazali Hamzah and Nyoman “Blacky” Satria had to compete against a field of fellow Indonesian surfers in a trial event on October 5^th to gain entry into this prestigious event.

Both Hamzah and Satria were defeated in Round 2, but received $900 USD prize money for their two rounds of surfing in the 2012 Oakley ASP World Pro Junior Championships Bali.

12 Oktober 2012, Kuta-Bali:  ‘Rising star’ dan pemegang wildcard asal Indonesia, Hairil “Oney” Anwar akhirnya harus tersingkir di babak 3, ditaklukkan oleh Connor Coffin dari Amerika – dan mengakhiri langkahnya untuk menjadi juara di event Oakley ASP World Pro Junior Championship yang digelar di Gianyar, pantai Keramas.

Anwar mendapat giliran pertama untuk menaklukkan ombak di heat 30 menit tersebut, tapi gagal menyelesaikan aksi air-reverse nya. Saat itulah Coffin mengambil kesempatan dengan sempurna membelah set ombak untuk mencetak poin tertinggi di heat, 7.83 poin mendekati 10.

Coffin dan Anwar masing-masing memiliki style yang berbeda. Anwar terkenal dengan teknik aerial-nya, sedangkan Conner dikenal dengan power-nya.  Anwar kembali melawan balik – berusaha melengkapi air-reverse nya dan diganjar poin 7.67.

Kedua surfer ini menyajikan pertarungan yang hebat juga impresif – terutama bagi para pendukung kedua surfer yang berada di lokasi. Coffin sangat cerdik memilih ombak yang tepat untuknya beraksi dengan style-surfingnya. Sementara Oney masih mencari ombak yang ideal untuknya beraksi, Coffin mencetak sebuah skor yang masif untuk memimpin heat.

Coffin kembali mencetak poin di ombak berikutnya,  7.70 dan dijawab Anwar dengan 6.27 poin. Anwar membutuhkan 7.86 poin jika ingin memimpin heat. Tapi hingga waktu habis, Anwar tetap tidak dapat mencetak poin yang dibutuhkan untuk memimpin dan langkahnya terhenti untuk maju ke babak 4.

“Melawan Conner saya tahu saya harus lebih maksimal,” ujar Anwar setelah heat. “Saya mencari ombak yang ideal agar bisa kembali bermanuver di udara, tapi saya tidak menemukannya. Awalnya, saya merasa nyaman karena kondisi cuaca dan angin yang ada sangat memungkinkan saya untuk melakukan aksi di udara, dan saya tahu Conner tidak terlalu banyak melakukan aksi tersebut. Jadi saya yakin saya punya peluang besar untuk memenangkan heat, tapi hingga heat berakhir saya tidak menemukan ombak yang ideal. Dan Conner menemukan ombak idealnya.”

Saat ditanya apa hal terbesar yang bisa ia ambil dari pengalaman kali ini, ia menjawab,” saya harus lebih sabar dan benar-benar menunggu ombak yang tepat. I kept looking for a turn wave but only saw air section waves (tertawa).”

Anwar membawa pulang $1,200 USD dan juga pengalaman tak ternilai selama ia bertanding di event ASP World Championship pertamanya. Dengan bakat yang dimilikinya, sudah tentu karirnya tidak berhenti sampai di sini.

James Hendy (dari Rip Curl, sponsornya) yang menyaksikan dan menyemangati setiap heat Oney,  setelahnya menambahkan, ”saya pikir Oney sedang tidak cukup beruntung karena ombak yang rendah menjadi faktor utama ia tidak bisa melakukan manuver di udara secara utuh, termasuk faktor karang yang ada di sana. Dengan ombak yang lebih tinggi ia mungkin bisa melakukan setidaknya dua manuver di udara dan mencetak poin yang ia butuhkan untuk mendominasi heat. Tapi, pada akhirnya, hasil ini bagus untuk  modal kepercayaan dirinya, bertarung melawan salah satu surfer pro junior terbaik di dunia dan hal tersebut pastinya memberikan effort yang bagus.  Cukup bagus prestasi yang ia berikan, apalagi dari seorang anak dari Lakey Peak, Sumbawa. Saya sangat bangga padanya.”

Anwar adalah satu-satunya surfer Indonesia yang menerima ASP Wildcard, dikarenakan posisi rankingnya yaitu 9 di tur ASP Australian Pro Junior.  Sementara rekan seperjuangannya yang juga kakaknya, Gazali Hamzah dan Nyoman “Blacky” Satria harus berjuang terlebih dahulu melawan surfer-surfer Indonesia lainnya di event trial 5 Oktober lalu untuk masuk ke event prestisius ini.

Baik Hamzah dan Satria tereliminasi si babak 2, tapi keduanya menerima prize sebesar $900 untuk dua babak yang mereka ikuti di Oakley ASP World Pro Junior Championship Bali.

Oney Anwar Defeats Dylan Lightfoot to Advance into Round 3 of Oakley ASP World Pro Junior Championships Bali

11 October 2012, Kuta-Bali:  On Day 4 of the Oakley ASP World Pro Junior Championships Bali at Keramas Beach in Gianyar today, Indonesia’s Hairil “Oney” Anwar defeated South African Dylan Lightfoot to advance into Round 3, the sole remaining Indonesian wildcard remaining to compete against the world’s best pro junior surfer in this world championship event.

In Heat 11 of the elimination round 2, Anwar jumped into action as soon as the horn blew the start of the 25-minute heat, gaining the lead against Lightfoot, which he never relinquished.  His best two waves got scores of 6.17 and 6.16 for a two wave total of 12.34, which he earned by blasting turns and pulling off air reverses, never letting the pressure off of his opponent.  When time ran out, Lightfoot was still searching for a wave that would get him the 6.27 points he needed, ending with a wave total of 9.17

 “I was pretty confident going into this heat, “said Anwar who hails from Lakey Peak in Sumbawa, but is currently living and going to school in Palm Beach on Australia’s Gold Coast.  “All the other Indo boys got knocked out earlier today, so I really felt like I had to do for the boys.  My brother Gazali and friends from Lakey are all here to support me, so ya it feels really good to win this heat.”

When asked about his strategy going into the heat he explained, “I knew I had to find a good wave early, but make sure it was a good wave.  I didn’t want to think about Dylan, just think about me and the wave, so that was my plan.  Just get a good wave and do a couple of airs.”  And his plan for Round 3?  “It’s going to be hard, because everybody is surfing so good, so I’ll have to step up my game for sure.  I have really good boards and so I’ll just go out there and do my best.”

Anwar will be facing American Conner Coffin in Heat 12 of Round 3.

Oney’s brother Gazali Hamzah got off to a good start in Heat 2 against number 2 ranked pro junior Jack Freestone, but couldn’t hold off the charging Freestone for long.  Hamzah’s highest wave score was a 7.33 for a nice barrel ride, but then Freestone nailed one of his own for an 8.33, to which he then added 7.17 to seal his victory as Hamzah failed find a good scoring wave to exchange for his 3.33.

Hamzah goes home with a $900 paycheck for his two heats of surfing, and a great experience to remember his last year as a pro junior.  “I’m stoked I got a good barrel in the heat,” he said.  “I just wish I could have gotten another one, like that 8 point barrel of Jack’s.  Maybe I could have won if I’d have got that wave.  But I’m so proud that I got to compete in this event, especially because it my last year as a pro junior, so it’s been like a dream come true to be able to have the chance beat the best pro juniors in the world.”

The first Indonesian wildcard to be eliminated today was in the first heat of the day, which was Nyoman “Blacky” Satria from Bali.  Satria was up against a formidable competitor in the form of Hawaiian Keanu Asing, and though there were some good waves rolling through, Asing found it difficult to put up any high scores in the heat, his best a 6.17. Although Satria put on a good performance his best two waves scored only 4 points and 3.3 points, so he finished with a two wave total score of 7.3 to Asing’s 8.6.

Satria also receives a check for $900 USD for his two heats of surfing, as well as the once-in-a-lifetime experience of surfing in an ASP world championship event in his own backyard.

Oney Anwar Taklukkan Dylan Lightfoot Untuk Melaju ke Babak 3 Oakley ASP World Pro Junior Championships Bali

11 Oktober 2012, Kuta-Bali:  Di hari ke 4 Oakley ASP World Pro Junior Championships Bali yang digelar di pantai Keramas, Gianyar hari ini, surfer Indonesia Hairil “Oney” Anwar berhasil menaklukan surfer asal Afrika Selatan, Dylan Lightfoot untuk melaju ke babak 3. Anwar menjadi satu-satunya surfer Indonesia pemegang wildcard yang tersisa bertarung melawan surfer-surfer pro junior terbaik dunia di event internasional ini.

Di Heat 11 babak 2 yang merupakan babak eliminasi, Anwar langsung mengerahkan seluruh kemampuannya begitu horn pertanda start dibunyikan, dan langsung memimpin heat yang berlangsung selama selama 25 menit tersebut. Anwar sama sekali tidak memberi kesempatan pada rivalnya, Lightfoot.  Dua ombak terbaiknya diganjar poin 6.17 dan 6.16 total dengan total yaitu 12.34, menyajikan atraksi-atraksi air-reverse demi menyingkirkan kompetitornya. Saat waktu berakhir,  terlihat Lightfoot masih mencari ombak untuk menambah 6.27 poin untuk mengejar ketinggalannya.  Lightfood akhirnya hanya berhasil meraup total ombak 9.17

“Saya sangat percaya diri saat bertarung di heat ini,” ucap Anwar yang berasal dari Lakey Peak di Sumbawa, tapi saat ini tinggal dan bersekolah di Palm Beach Gold Coast, Australia. “Surfer-surfer Indonesia lainnya tersingkir terlebih dahulu hari ini, jadi saya pikir tinggal saya yang bisa melanjutkan perjuangan mereka. Kakak saya Gazeli dan beberapa kawan dari Lakey semuanya ada di sini untuk mendukung, jadi ya pastinya sangat senang bisa menang di heat ini.”

Saat ditanya apa strateginya bisa menang heat tersebut, ia menjelaskan, “Saya tahu saya harus menemukan ombak yang bagus di awal, dan memastikan bahwa ombak  tersebut bagus dan potensial.  Saya tidak berpikir apapun tentang Dylan, fokus saya hanyalah saya dan ombak.  Cari ombak yang tepat agar bisa melakukan trik di udara.”  Dan rencanamu untuk babak 3 nanti?  “Saya yakin, pertarungan di depan akan lebih tangguh, karena semua surfer yang lolos bermain sangat apik. Jadi yang harus saya lakukan adalah memompa level surfing saya. Saya memiliki papan yang bagus, jadi yang saya bisa lakukan adalah pergi ke sana dan surfing semaksimal mungkin.”

Anwar sendiri akan bertarung dengan surfer asal Amerika, Conner Coffin di Heat 12 babak 3.

Kakak Oney, Gazali melakukan start yang baik di babak 2 dan sempat memimpin saat melawan pemegang ranking pro junior no. 2 dunia, Jack Freestone, tapi tidak bertahan lama.  Skor ombak tertinggi Hamzah adalah 7.33, hasil dari mengendarai barrel dengan solid. Tapi kemudian Freestone unjuk kemampuan untuk langsung mengantungi skor 8.33 – dan kemudian menambahkan lagi 7.17  poin untuk  langsung menghantarkannya mendominasi heat dan menyingkirkan Gazeli yang gagal mendapat ombak bagus untuk menambah poinnya yang tertinggal 3.33 poin. 

Walaupun demikian, Hamzah membawa pulang paycheck sebesar $900 untuk dua heat nya – juga tentunya, sebuah pengalaman tak ternilai mengingat ini adalah tahun terakhirnya sebagai surfer pro junior.

“Saya senang sekali saat mendapat barrel yang bagus,” katanya. “Saya berharap akan ada lagi barrel yang seperti itu, seperti yang Jack dapatkan ketika meraih 8 poin. Saya mungkin bisa menang kalau saja ada ombak yang seperti itu. Tapi yang pasti, saya senang bisa bertarung di kompetisi ini, khususnya karena ini adalah tahun terakhir saya sebagai pro junior. Jadi ini seperti mimpi yang terwujud, punya kesempatan untuk bertarung melawan surfer-surfer pro junior terbaik di dunia.

Surfer Indonesia pemegang wildcard yang tersingkir pertama hari ini yaitu Nyoman “Blacky” Satria dari Bali.  Satria berhadapan dengan surfer tangguh asal Hawaii, Keanu Asing. Walau begitu, Keanu pun kesulitan untuk mencetak skor tinggi di heat tersebut. Ia hanya berhasil meraup 6.17 poin.  Walau begitu, Satria menghadirkan performa yang maksimal dengan skor dua ombak terbaiknya yaitu 4 poin dan 3.3 poin, finis dengan total dua ombak poin 7.3. Sementara Asing mengantungi 8.6 poin.

Sama seperti Hamzah, Satria menerima cek sebesar  $900 USD untuk dua heat surfing nya, dan tentunya, pengalaman sekali seumur hidup bisa surfing di event sekaliber ASP world championship ini di kampung halamannya sendiri.

Two Women Left Standing At The Oakley ASP World Junior Championships Bali 
KERAMAS, Bali/Indonesia (Wednesday, October 10, 2012) – The 2012 Oakley ASP World Junior Championships Bali relocated to the other side of the island and set-up at Keramas for Round 2, 3, Quarterfinals and the Semifinals of the Women's draw today. There were some long lulls in-between sets, but it was well worth the wait with 3 to 4 foot (1.5 - 2 meter) beautiful waves on offer. After a long day of surf action there are only two women left in the event vying to be crowned ASP Women's World Junior Champion.
Bianca Buitendag (ZAF) used her sharp backhand attack to advance to the Final defeating reigning ASP Women's World Junior Champion Leila Hurst (HAW) and New Yorker Quincy Davis (USA). Buitendag, who has qualified for next year's ASP Women's World Championship Tour is in red hot form and has posted solid scores throughout the entire event.
"I can't believe I've made it this far," Buitendag said. "I've had a good event so far and now I'm focused on the Final. I grew up surfing on my backhand so I'm super comfortable going right out here. This is such a great contest, all the girls are surfing amazing. I've had some really tough heats, I'm just glad that I've been able to post some big scores."
Nikki Van Dijk (AUS) eliminated fellow Australian and last year's Oakley World Pro Junior runner-up Philippa Anderson (AUS) in a back and forth battle. Van Dijk will now face Buitendag in the Final, the pair have had a number of battles at ASP 6-Star events throughout the year so the stage has been set for an epic Final duel.
"I'm so excited!" Van Dijk said. "It's been such a great day. Getting to surf Keramas with just one other girl has been so much fun. I can't believe I'm in the Final and have a 50/50 chance of winning the ASP World Junior Championships. If you told me this would happen at the start of the year I wouldn't have believed it."
Quincy Davis (USA) advanced to the Semifinals over Mahina Maeda (HAW) with some last minute heroics, but was unable to get past Buitendag in their Semifinal bout. Davis is the highest placed American surfer, finishing equal 3rd in the Oakley ASP World Junior Championships Bali.
"This event has been a great learning experience for me," Davis said. "I lost in Round 3 at this contest last year, so it feels amazing to have made the Semifinals."

Gazali Hamzah and Nyoman Satria Earn Indonesian Wildcard Spots in Oakley ASP World Junior Championships Bali

5 September 2012, Kuta-Bali:  It was a fiercely contested final in Canggu today for the two wildcards spots in the Oakley ASP World Junior Championship Bali that will start tomorrow, with less than a point separating the top three of the four Indonesian finalists. 

When the horn blew the end of the 25 minute final, it was Lakey Peak Sumbawa’s Gazali Hamzah who finished first with a two wave total of 11.25 points, narrowly edging out Nyoman “Blacky” Satria from Legian Beach in Bali who made an impressive come from behind run to edge out Nusa Lembongan’s Agus Frimanto, ending with 11.15 points over Frimanto’s 10.70.  Angga Bayu from Bali's East Coast rounded out the final with a total score of 6.70.

Extremely happy with his well-earned victory, winner Hamzah had this to say after being presented with his wildcard by Oakley’s Gino Andreas.  “This morning when I started out I knew I had to really try my hardest and go all out, because it’s my last year and my last chance as a pro junior.  When I got to the finals I was happy of course, but the conditions were really difficult and all the guys out are so good, so I was nervous.  When I got that 7.25 on my first wave it gave me confidence, and I knew I just had to get one more good score to win.  It was hard with lots of closeout waves coming through, so hard to find the good one, but in the end I was good enough to win.”  When asked how he felt about being able to join his brother Hairil “Oney” Anwar in the main event, he replied, “I’m really proud, for both getting the wildcard and being able to compete with my brother Oney.  It’s the first time we get to compete together in a world championship event, so it’s really great.”

Oney Anwar has been going to school and competing in Australia for several years now, and was granted a wildcard by the ASP based on his status as the highest rated Indonesian junior surfer in the 2012 ASP Australasia Pro Junior Series, finishing in 9^th place overall

Dark horse Nyoman “Blacky” Satria from Legian Beach, chaired up the beach by his Padma Beach posse that included last year’s giant killer Darmaputra Tonjo, was all smiles and shouts, saying, “I’m so…I don’t know how to explain it…just so really happy.  Last year in the trials I finished 17^th, so different from this year. This year I really focused and been training hard, so happy to get this good result. I’m so stoked to get this wildcard and get into a world championship event. I can’t wait for tomorrow!”

Satria put on a solid performance on his way to the final, but was not really favored to end up with a wildcard in a final that included Lembongan’s Agus Frimanto, as Frimanto has won several junior and pro junior events and also has a Coca-Cola ISC Open win under his belt (the 2011 Mentawai Surf Competition at Lances Right.)  Frimanto was blitzing the field and won all of his heats handily, but a last minute charge by Satria that earned him a well-deserved 6 points on his last wave put Frimanto on the ropes with no time to fight back.

It was a testing day for most all of the the 32 Indonesian pro junior (under 21 years of age) surfers that gathered at Canggu this morning to take their best shot at winning one of the two coveted wildcard slots in this, as it was not only a battle against each other but also against elements, as the wave conditions were nothing but challenging with frequent 6 foot closeouts making for a non-stop paddle marathon. But they were all heart, and knowing that what was at stake was an entry ticket into the first ever world championship event ever to be held in Bali, there was no holding back.

The two Indonesian wildcard winners will be facing the world’s best pro juniors tomorrow at Canggu Beach, immediately following the traditional Balinese opening ceremony that is due to start around 8:00 pm.
