Pic: ASP/Hain Quarterfinalists Decided at the Oakley ASP World Junior Championships Bali  KERAMAS, Bali/Indonesia (Saturday, October 13, 2012) – The 2012 Oakley ASP World Junior Championships Bali was treated to another stellar day of competition surfing at Keramas today. Competitors revelled in the 3 to 4 foot (1.5 meter) right handers running down the reef at the world famous Keramas. From a field of 48 surfers, just eight remain in the draw, who will battle it out to be crowned the 2012 ASP World Junior Champion. Jack Freestone (AUS) scored the 2012 Oakley ASP World Junior Championships' first perfect 10-point-ride for a monster full-rotation alley-oop aerial. Freestone had a couple of shaky heats earlier in the event, but was back to his devastating best today, posting multiple scores in the excellent range to finish with a two-wave heat total of 18.17 (out of a possible 20). "I already had a couple of good scores and thought it was time to do a big air," Freestone said. "I stood up, saw the section and the rotation felt good then I landed, it felt really good. I love this event, I love Bali. I'm looking forward to surfing some more with just one other guy out." Ezekiel Lau (HAW) posted yet another impressive heat win in Round 4 over Carlos Munoz (CRI). Munoz pushed Lau to the brink, with both surfers throwing down massive moves, but the Hawaiian came home strong and sending the Coasta Rican home. "It's great to win that heat," Lau said. "But you can't think about it too much because you've got another one coming up. Also when the conditions are this good you can't get over excited. It's been a great event for me so far, I'm into the Quarterfinals like last year so hopefully this year I can go further." Andrew Doheny (USA) eliminated Hawaiian powerhouse surfer Keanu Asing (HAW) in their Round 4 bout. Doheny's classic Californian style impressed the judges and all onlookers, as he takes another step closer to matching his result from this event last year, a Final berth. "That heat was gnarly," Doheny said. "I knew that Keanu (Asing) is good with heat tactics and stuff, so my plan was to try and get the first good wave of the heat and it must have worked. I came second here last year and I want to do as good, if not better because this is my last year in the juniors." Cooper Chapman (AUS) came flying out of the gates and laid down some of the day's most impressive turns to make it to the Quarterfinals in his first ever Oakley ASP World Junior Championships event. "I kept falling on the end sections," Chapman said. "It's good to know I can still get a good score without completing the wave. This is my first year at the ASP World Junior Championships so it feels great to make it into the Quarterfinals." Connor Coffin (USA) advanced to the Quarterfinals against the odds after scoring an interference in the first minute of the heat. Coffin paddled for a wave when Kalani David (HAW) had the inside position. When David stood up, Coffin pulled back, but it was too late and he collapsed a section of the wave ahead. His interference penalty was losing half of his second scoring ride. Coffin was however still able to amass enough point to advance. "I didn't think he (Kalani David) was going to make it onto the wave," Cofffin said. "But as soon as I saw that he did, I pulled back. It must have been too late though because I got the interference. I just though 'oh well at least I get to surf Keramas for another 29 minutes with no one out', but then I found a couple of waves and still made it through the heat. Stoked." Frederico Morais (PRT) won the closest heat of the day, eliminating Brazilian Italo Ferreira (BRA) by a mere 0.50. Morais will now face Ramzi Boukhiam (MAR) in Quarterfinal 4 when competition resumes. "I feel like Keramas really suits my surfing," Morais said. "That heat was close, but I'm in the Quarterfinals now and I'm feeling confident. I'm looking forward to the surfing my Quarterfinal, hopefully we have some more great waves." Ramzi Boukhiam (MAR) from Morocco defeated Australian Thomas Woods (AUS) in the final heat of the day. Boukhiam is the last goofy-footed (right foot forward) surfer left in the event, using his powerful backhand attack to secure a Quarterfinal berth. "That heat was really hard," Boukhiam said. "The conditions changed just before I paddled out, it was more like a beachbreak than Keramas. I've been training hard, I had a really European season and I'm just trying to keep the same mind-set at this event." The swell is decreasing rapidly and Beau Emerton, Contest Director has called that tomorrow will be a lay-day and the next call will be Monday at 6am local time. Pic ASP/Hain Keramas Creates History on Day 7 of the Oakley ASP World Junior Championships Bali KERAMAS, Bali/Indonesia (Friday, October 12, 2012) – Today the 2012 Oakley ASP World Junior Championships Bali were treated to flawless 4 - 6 foot (1.5 - 2 meter) surf. The pumping conditions gave the surfers every opportunity to put their full bag of tricks on display. The day started with Nikki Van Dijk (AUS) claiming the event win and the ASP World Junior Title in the Women's division followed by the Men's Round 3. The field of 48 surfers has been culled to just 16 remaining, with the eventual event winner being crowned the 2012 ASP World Junior Champion. Ezekiel Lau (HAW) put his tube riding skills and power carves to work today to defeat Deivid Silva (BRA) in Round 3. Lau finished equal 5th at this event last year and will have to get past Carlos Munoz (CRI) in the next Round to make the Quarterfinals again in 2012. "That first set was so important," Lau said. "It's tempting to catch the medium size ones because they're so perfect, but you have to wait for the big ones to get the scores. I was lucky to get that first one, it lined up perfectly. Surfing waves like this in a contest is incredible, I can't believe it." Wade Carmichael (AUS) posted the day's highest two-wave wave total, a 17.00 (out of a possible 20) for a series of viciously powerful carves and snaps. Carmichael eliminated Round 1's top performer Peterson Crisanto (BRA), sending a warning shot to his fellow competitors. "I just wanted to go out there and get barrelled," Carmichael said. "But that first wave came through and didn't open up so I just rattled off a few turns down the line. I'm one of the event's lowest seeds, but it doesn't bother me who I surf against. You just have to go out there, catch the best waves and do your thing." Caue Wood (BRA) did the Brazilian contingent proud with an upset win over 2009 ASP World Junior Champion Maxime Huscenot (FRA). The pair battled back and forth in a tight heat that went Wood's way, he will now face Cooper Chapman (AUS) when competition resumes in Round 4. "The surf is perfect today," Wood said. "I was a bit worried at the end because Maxime (Huscenot) is a great surfer and a former ASP World Junior Champion. I just tried to keep calm and focus on my surfing and I'm so happy to win that one." Jack Freestone (AUS) survived a scare in Heat 9, in the dying minutes he was trailing Brazilian surfer Geovane Ferreira (BRA). Freestone focused in on a wave, launched a series vertical turns, earning him the required score and a spot in Round 4 where he'll face Arashi Kato (JPN). "It feels good to get through that one," Freestone said. "I fell off on a few and he fell off a few, so it was one of those funny heats. I needed a score at the end of the heat, but I wasn't stressing. I'm not putting pressure on myself at this event, I'm just going to see what happens. Bali is a special place for me and I'd love to take this competition out again." Kalani David (HAW) and Luke Davis (USA) put on the most exciting heat of the day, that also ended up being the closest heat of the day with the surfers separated by 0.16. David, the second youngest surfer in the men's draw ended up winning the heat thanks to his aerial antics. "I jumped in the air when they read out the score," David said. "Luke (Davis) is such a good surfer, I feel bad for him losing by only that much. I don't know what I was thinking on that wave, I just there up a big air, and when I landed I just went for another one. I'm so stoked to win that one." Connor Coffin (USA) eliminated the last local Indonesian surfer Hairil Anwar (IND) this afternoon in a great battle. The two surfers had contrasting approaches to the heat, Coffin using power gouges and Anwar taking to the air, with Coffin taking the win. "Oney (Hairil Anwar) is one of my favourite people in this event," Coffin said. "He came up to me to talk about conditions and say good luck before the heat. That's why I like him so much, he's such a nice guy. I knew I'd have to get some good scores to beat him because he does these rad blow-tail turns and airs. This is my last year as a junior so I'm really enjoying my time at this event." Frederico Morais (PRT) went off in his Round 3 Heat win against Japanese surfer Kaito Ohashi (JPN) today. The conditions had changed since the morning, it was smaller and lower tide with some onshore winds, but he launched massive airs and turns and was one of the day's most impressive surfers. "We've been really lucky to have good waves at Keramas for the past two days," Morais said. "I free-surfed around this time yesterday and it really help me get to know what to expect for my heat today. The surf is very different from the barrels this morning, but it's still really good." After the last heat of the day surfers, event staff and spectators participated in a traditional surfing memorial paddle-out for the victims of the 2002 Bali Bombings to commemorate the 10 year anniversary. Two Women Left Standing At The Oakley ASP World Junior Championships Bali 
KERAMAS, Bali/Indonesia (Wednesday, October 10, 2012) – The 2012 Oakley ASP World Junior Championships Bali relocated to the other side of the island and set-up at Keramas for Round 2, 3, Quarterfinals and the Semifinals of the Women's draw today. There were some long lulls in-between sets, but it was well worth the wait with 3 to 4 foot (1.5 - 2 meter) beautiful waves on offer. After a long day of surf action there are only two women left in the event vying to be crowned ASP Women's World Junior Champion.
Bianca Buitendag (ZAF) used her sharp backhand attack to advance to the Final defeating reigning ASP Women's World Junior Champion Leila Hurst (HAW) and New Yorker Quincy Davis (USA). Buitendag, who has qualified for next year's ASP Women's World Championship Tour is in red hot form and has posted solid scores throughout the entire event.
"I can't believe I've made it this far," Buitendag said. "I've had a good event so far and now I'm focused on the Final. I grew up surfing on my backhand so I'm super comfortable going right out here. This is such a great contest, all the girls are surfing amazing. I've had some really tough heats, I'm just glad that I've been able to post some big scores."
Nikki Van Dijk (AUS) eliminated fellow Australian and last year's Oakley World Pro Junior runner-up Philippa Anderson (AUS) in a back and forth battle. Van Dijk will now face Buitendag in the Final, the pair have had a number of battles at ASP 6-Star events throughout the year so the stage has been set for an epic Final duel.
"I'm so excited!" Van Dijk said. "It's been such a great day. Getting to surf Keramas with just one other girl has been so much fun. I can't believe I'm in the Final and have a 50/50 chance of winning the ASP World Junior Championships. If you told me this would happen at the start of the year I wouldn't have believed it."
Quincy Davis (USA) advanced to the Semifinals over Mahina Maeda (HAW) with some last minute heroics, but was unable to get past Buitendag in their Semifinal bout. Davis is the highest placed American surfer, finishing equal 3rd in the Oakley ASP World Junior Championships Bali.
"This event has been a great learning experience for me," Davis said. "I lost in Round 3 at this contest last year, so it feels amazing to have made the Semifinals."

Lay-Day Called for Today And Tomorrow At The Oakley ASP World Junior Championships Bali CANGGU, Bali/Indonesia (Monday, October 7, 2012) – There won't be any surfing at the 2012 Oakley ASP World Junior Championships Bali today and tomorrow due to small surf and bad winds. There is a promising swell expected to hit on Wednesday so Contest Director Beau Emerton and Head Judge Glen Elliot have made the call to move the contest to Keramas and wait for the new swell. "The surf is pretty bad at the moment and tomorrow's forecast is looking the same," Elliot said. "We're going to move everything over to Keramas because the new swell is looking good for over there. The tides are perfect for early mornings so the next call will be Wednesday at 6am." The Oakley ASP World Junior Championships Bali will run from October 6 – 17. Gazali Hamzah and Nyoman Satria Earn Indonesian Wildcard Spots in Oakley ASP World Junior Championships Bali

5 September 2012, Kuta-Bali:  It was a fiercely contested final in Canggu today for the two wildcards spots in the Oakley ASP World Junior Championship Bali that will start tomorrow, with less than a point separating the top three of the four Indonesian finalists. 

When the horn blew the end of the 25 minute final, it was Lakey Peak Sumbawa’s Gazali Hamzah who finished first with a two wave total of 11.25 points, narrowly edging out Nyoman “Blacky” Satria from Legian Beach in Bali who made an impressive come from behind run to edge out Nusa Lembongan’s Agus Frimanto, ending with 11.15 points over Frimanto’s 10.70.  Angga Bayu from Bali's East Coast rounded out the final with a total score of 6.70.

Extremely happy with his well-earned victory, winner Hamzah had this to say after being presented with his wildcard by Oakley’s Gino Andreas.  “This morning when I started out I knew I had to really try my hardest and go all out, because it’s my last year and my last chance as a pro junior.  When I got to the finals I was happy of course, but the conditions were really difficult and all the guys out are so good, so I was nervous.  When I got that 7.25 on my first wave it gave me confidence, and I knew I just had to get one more good score to win.  It was hard with lots of closeout waves coming through, so hard to find the good one, but in the end I was good enough to win.”  When asked how he felt about being able to join his brother Hairil “Oney” Anwar in the main event, he replied, “I’m really proud, for both getting the wildcard and being able to compete with my brother Oney.  It’s the first time we get to compete together in a world championship event, so it’s really great.”

Oney Anwar has been going to school and competing in Australia for several years now, and was granted a wildcard by the ASP based on his status as the highest rated Indonesian junior surfer in the 2012 ASP Australasia Pro Junior Series, finishing in 9^th place overall

Dark horse Nyoman “Blacky” Satria from Legian Beach, chaired up the beach by his Padma Beach posse that included last year’s giant killer Darmaputra Tonjo, was all smiles and shouts, saying, “I’m so…I don’t know how to explain it…just so really happy.  Last year in the trials I finished 17^th, so different from this year. This year I really focused and been training hard, so happy to get this good result. I’m so stoked to get this wildcard and get into a world championship event. I can’t wait for tomorrow!”

Satria put on a solid performance on his way to the final, but was not really favored to end up with a wildcard in a final that included Lembongan’s Agus Frimanto, as Frimanto has won several junior and pro junior events and also has a Coca-Cola ISC Open win under his belt (the 2011 Mentawai Surf Competition at Lances Right.)  Frimanto was blitzing the field and won all of his heats handily, but a last minute charge by Satria that earned him a well-deserved 6 points on his last wave put Frimanto on the ropes with no time to fight back.

It was a testing day for most all of the the 32 Indonesian pro junior (under 21 years of age) surfers that gathered at Canggu this morning to take their best shot at winning one of the two coveted wildcard slots in this, as it was not only a battle against each other but also against elements, as the wave conditions were nothing but challenging with frequent 6 foot closeouts making for a non-stop paddle marathon. But they were all heart, and knowing that what was at stake was an entry ticket into the first ever world championship event ever to be held in Bali, there was no holding back.

The two Indonesian wildcard winners will be facing the world’s best pro juniors tomorrow at Canggu Beach, immediately following the traditional Balinese opening ceremony that is due to start around 8:00 pm.
