SURFER GIRL AND ODYSSEY SURFING SCHOOL HOST SURFING SESSION WITH ORPHANS

SURFER GIRL AND ODYSSEY SURFING SCHOOL HOST SURFING SESSION WITH ORPHANS
In its continuous efforts to always make positive differences in everything that they do, the happiest girl’s brand in the world, Surfer Girl partnered with Odyssey Surfing School to host a surfing session with orphans at Kuta Beach on Saturday, 22 December 2012.
10 children from the Elisama Orphanage in Denpasar came to Kuta Beach for surfing lessons with an Odyssey surf instructor who as dressed in a full Santa Claus outfit. Helping with the teaching was Santa’s ‘assistants,’ which were Surfer Girl’s own team riders. The 6 team riders – aged from 10 to 14 years old – were so stoked to be able to share their surfing techniques and play along with the kids.
The event was not only about surfing, but was also packed with lots of fun and informative content. To start the day, the kids visited the Balawisata Lifeguards where the lifeguard on duty, Bapak Made Sujana, shared insights on safety when swimming in the sea. Following the visit, the kids then joined in a beach clean-up along the shores of Kuta Beach, then to the place where another exciting event was waiting; an environmental game by Surfer Girl. Conducted by the CSR team of Surfer Girl, the fun game was designed to inform and emphasize on the importance of waste segregation, with the kids racing to place each mentioned type of garbage into its appropriate bin.
The kids and all the team riders had a blast during this half-day event, especially when it came to jumping into the waves. Although this was the first-time surfing for most of the kids from the orphanage they were fearless, with most being able to stand up on a surfboard on the shorebreaks of Kuta Beach, right after half-an-hour theory session.

Surfer Girl's Head of Marketing Communications Nadia Bintoro also handed over donations in the form of Surfer Girl merchandises to the Elisama Orphanage, saying, “We’re really thankful for the orphanage and Odyssey Surfing School for this wonderful opportunity to share with the community. We’re sure that this won’t be a one-time event, as this is who we are – a fun brand that cares about others and the environment. We are looking forward to hosting more fun-filled, charity events in 2013.”

7th Annual ASC Sanctioned Monsoon Mayhem International Surf Challenge Returns to Desaru Beach in Malaysia from January 4-6

7th Annual ASC Sanctioned Monsoon Mayhem International Surf Challenge Returns to Desaru Beach in Malaysia from January 4-6

21 December 2012, Kuta-Bali:  The 7th annual Monsoon Mayhem International Surf Challenge returns to Desaru Beach in Malaysia from 4-6 January 2013 as a 2-star Asian Surfing Championship event, which will draw both professional and amateur surfers from all over South East Asia including Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and Taiwan to compete for the $14,000 MYR ($4,600 USD) in total prize money and ASC championship points, and just to have heaps of fun at this unique event.

Located just east of Johor Baru in Malaysia and the closest surfing beach to Singapore, Desaru Beach is a white sand strip of beachbreak that can offer up peaceful glassy conditions as well as maniacally thumping closeouts during the monsoon season, so what will be on offer each year is anybody’s guess. Mother Nature is a fickle beast and each year does her best to make sure that the event lives up to its “Mayhem” moniker.

There will be surfing competitions in four categories, Men’s Open, Women’s Open Masters (35 years of age and older), and Bodyboard), as well the Slide Jam Longboarding Competition, which saw tremendous success last year and is expected to draw skaters from all over Malaysia and Singapore to compete for the $1,000 RM first place prize.

The brainchild of Nazir “Ajill” Salleh of Bigfoot Industries, a surf and skate product retailer in Singapore, the Monsoon Mayhem event has continued to grow in popularity each year as a surf, skate, and music event. This is the third year the surfing competition has been sanctioned by the ASC, and it looks to be another exciting event drawing surfers, skaters, and their fans to the South East Malaysian beach once again.

For more information and details about the Monsoon Mayhem, how to get there from Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, as well as accommodation options see the Bigfoot Industries (BGFT)Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/events/403742169700962/?ref=ts&fref=ts
or just send an email with your inquiries to bfinternational@gmail.com.

The Monsoon Mayhem event is supported by the Malaysian state of Johor as both a tourism promotion activity and in support of the growth of surfing in Malaysia.

Monsoon Mayhem 2013 is organized by Bigfoot Industries, JOHO and Boomslang, sanctioned by the Asian Surfing Championships with official event partners Tourism Malaysia, Tourism Johor, Pejabat Memeterian Pelancongan Negeri Johor, Kejora, sponsored by UNKL347, Fatimah Mohsin The Wedding Gallery, and Light Connections and is supported by the Surfing Association of Singapore, Johor Surfing Association, and MRB.

The official accommodation for the event is the Pulai Desaru Beach Resort and Spa, check them out at http://www.pulaidesarubeach-johor.com

Volunteers picking up rubbish It was given a thorough cleaning. This area has probably never been cleaned before.
15 Ketapang trees were planted for shade and erosion control.
These trees were grown and the compost they were planted in were produced from the Waste to Wonder Program at the Island Sustainability Center sponsored by Rotary Club Bali, Nusa Dua.
Students from BaliWISE helping to clean the beach
Estela, Roles passionate Permaculture Guru taught everyone how to plant the trees in the best position and best way for them to get off to a great start. It is important to plant as many trees as possible at the start of the rainy season, so they are strong and big enough before the next dry.
"Trees are the lungs of the earth"Over 20 extra large garbage bags were collected as well.
Big thanks to the students and staff of Role and Komune for the 5am wake up and 6am start and all the hard work.
Big thanks to Komune for drinks and snacks on completion of the job well done.

Sean Gilhooly’s INDO The Movie Premier and Launch at Poco Loco in Bali on December 22

Sean Gilhooly’s INDO The Movie Premier and Launch at Poco Loco in Bali on December 22

14 December 2012, Kuta-Bali:  The much anticipated launching of Sean Gilhooley’s surf film INDO the Movie will be happening next Saturday night December 22nd at the Poco Loco Kitchen and Bar in Legian starting off at 7:30 pm.

Heralded by Surftime’s Matt George as “the most visually stunning and breathtaking documentation of surfing to come out of Asia,” INDO the Movie showcases a cast of the best of the best Indonesian surfers including Garut Widiarta, Mustofa Jeksen, Raditya Rondi, Marlon Gerber, Lee Wilson and others as they surf the greatest waves on the planet against the backdrops of epic scenery in exotic locations.

“I’m so stoked to see this movie,” says Garut Widiarta.  “I’ve done three boat trips with Sean to the best waves in Indo to shoot these clips, and these will be my best sections ever for sure.  I love having all of us Indo boys in one high quality and high performance movie like this. Can’t wait for the premiere!”

Mustofa Jeksen agreed, saying “I feel like this is a really special movie for us Indonesian surfers, for the quality of the surfing, the editing, the music and everything.  It gives me chills down my back when I watch it…can’t wait to see it on the big screen at the opening!”

INDO the Movie is the work of Bali-based Sean Gilhooley, who has been gathering the footage over the last two years and spending hours editing his first surf movie effort. "I do a lot of work for the Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championship tour, so I get to witness Indonesia’s best surfing on a regular basis, both in an out of competition.” said Gilhooley.  “I can safely say from the quarter final heats on, the standard of surfing here is up there with any WQS (World Qualifying Series) event, so I really wanted to document that in the best way I could.”
Being on the tour, when the comp is on he is flat out, but there are also free days at the comps as well time in between where he can get the boys together and shoot his own footage. “Over the last four years I have made over 450 web videos for these surfing events, and most of these clips are on a strict deadline where I film all day at the beach then spend between 6 to 8 hours that night editing and putting the clip on the net. Thankfully I love my job!  But I have always wanted to do my own thing without anyone looking over my shoulder dictating what I’m doing, so this was my chance to do it.  INDO is all me.  So if it sucks it’s on me, but at least I did it my way,” he added with grin.

DVD’s of INDO the Movie will be available at all the major surf shops in Bali and around Indonesia including Rip Curl, Billabong, Quiksilver, Volcom and wherever Electric sunglasses are sold.

Check out the INDO theMovie teaser at https://vimeo.com/55446648

Gilhooley was assisted in the INDO project by veteran Bali photographer Jason Childs, Balibelly.tv’s Thai Little, and Celeste Kim (Sparkelize) with the music.

INDO the Movie and its premier and launch at the Poco Loco Kitchen and Bar is sponsored/supported by One Stop Events, Rip Curl, Billabong, Quiksilver, Electric, Volcom, Cuervo, Bintang, Surftime, Balibelly.tv, and Indo Inc Productions.
