The big risk in Bali is dengue fever rather than malaria. Dengue is characterized by fever and weakness. A healthy person can recover and many Bali expats have had dengue. Keep hydrated and ride it out. Dengue is caused by the larger mosquito that bites in the daytime.

As witnessed  recently and reported in the local press one thing never changes in Bali. That is the 2 most dangerous things for a tourist are traffic and the ocean. Its the same every year. Just this week 2 news reports came in stating a US Navy Seal, war veteran, Middle East soldier etc. had been killed in Bali while on R&R riding a scooter. Another reported that a 60 year old tourist from Austria drowned at Nusa Lembongan while going for a leisurely dip.

House repairs in Bali

 One Bali expat recently woke up to find that the water in his Seminyak house was not working. What could be the problem? This particular house had a large water-tower where water was pumped to create pressure. The electric pump appeared to be working, water could be heard sloshing, but none came out of the taps. After consulting the Balinese owner, the expat agreed to wait for some Javanese 'tukan' (workers) to arrive and look for the source of the problem. The house owner suggested that the expat would agree to pay for all the costs of this investigation and subsequent repair. 

Here is the thing about renting in Bali. We know that a renter is only liable for damages to the property, not long term repairs. This is often stated in the contract too, but in situations where repairs are actually needed this fact often gets 'misunderstood'.  

On this occasion the expat was able to politely explain that if he 'broke' the water system he would pay for repairs, but if the water system was merely old then 'bapak' (the older gentleman) would be liable. It all ended well and the 'tukan' earned some extra money fixing an old decaying water system.

Bali hit with 6.1 earthquake - still standing

 Bali experienced a 6.1 earthquake this morning which came right out of the blue. The entire episode lasted maybe 20 seconds. The epicentre was measured at 61.3 kilometres deep, some 130 kilometres south-southwest of Denpasar, said US seismologists in Hawaii.

Its a pretty unnerving feeling to have the whole house shake.  One wonders if the building will suddenly come apart and collapse. Depending on the construction buildings can survive earthquakes. On the west coast of the US almost all buildings are made of wood, which flexes instead of snapping. With cement structures its disintegration and displacement that you are guarding against. All of the tourist villas and hotels in Bali are made with cement slabs containing rebar which anchors the slab in place. Box structures are at their most vulnerable to displacement at the corners, so bracing corners is essential.

This writer was at home when  the earthquake struck. The common reaction here in Bali is to run outside at the first sign of a quake, fearing a building collapse. Seventeen people were injured today by flying masonry and roofing tiles doing just that. If a roofing tile hits you on the head it could be all over.

Common logic says get under a table or some other piece of furniture if you can't get outside. Don't do that either, you'll be crushed. Find a solid object, (stone bathtub, stone counter, garden wall, large step, stack of computer / office paper in boxes etc) and lay close to it. Even if the roof falls in you'll survive.

21 billion rupiah budgeted for Bali roads

 According to the BeatMag the Bali government has budgeted 21 billion rp for road works. As anyone who has visited Bali will tell you the conditions of the roads is pretty bad. Even compared with other SE countries such as Thailand the roads are in a poor state.

We've got 2 problems here. #1 the level of road construction is low. The quality and standard of the newly built rads is poor, that's why they decay and break less than a year later. Want to see properly made roads? Go inside the Nusa Dua complex, you won't find a pothole anywhere. Outside the main gate its back to reality and crappy roads again. 

#2 is corruption. The people charged with managing the dispersal of money together with the local authorities often see government money as their private 'get rich quick' scheme. Its common knowledge that when a road construction project is approved the local government guy, police and banjar guys have a meeting to figure out how much of the pot will be theirs even before the thing has started.

Solution: Hire the company who built the roads in Nusa Dusa to do road construction. Then the roads would last 10 times as long.

14 year old Australian boy arrested for marijuana possession

 As reported in many major media outlets a 14 year old Australian boy has been arrested for possession of marijuana. Everyone from Kevin Rudd to the Australian Ambassador has been scrambling to the boy's defense. How can this happen? He was so nice, he's so young, it must be a mistake...etc. What no one has asked and probably will not ask is what was the little fuckwit doing buying drugs? 

According to reports he was out getting a massage and thought it a good idea to purchase the drugs offered to him by a stranger. Yes you have to feel sorry for anyone being so obviously set up, but why bring it on yourself?

Australian media will make a big song and dance about this, 'poor us, poor us, poor fucking us'.  A 'deal' will by done (poor mum & dad who have just lost their mortgage) and little Johnny fuckwit can go back to dipshitville and play footie with his maties again.

Geger beach project under scrutiny

 Bali expats are no doubt saddened by the wholesale destruction (and that's the word for it) of Pantai Geger ( Geger beach) south of Nusa Dua. What is going on at Geger beach is another symptom of what's wrong with Bali. A once tranquil, beautiful and relaxing beach where locals and expat used to enjoy has been destroyed by a construction company. 

BeatMag reports that a special commitee of the Bali Legislative Council inspected the site recently after reports of environmental damage. They confirmed the reported damage. These commitee members could of flown over in an airliner and spotted the environmental damage. The construction site could fit the MCG inside it about 5 times. Giant trucks, crains and diggers with massive power drills are at work destroying all before them. Its not not much about environmental damage as totally anihilation of everything there. Don't tell me the Bali government had no idea this was going on! Come on. 

As BeatMag reports there is growing suspission of corrupt so here we are again, another beautiful spot destroyed by greedy corrupt retards and the people of Bali left short changed again.
