Bali Bird Flu - February 2012

The Ministry of Health announced the death of a 12-year boy, identified only as DWM, from Badung regency, Bali. Avian flu – more widely known as bird flu – was suspected as the cause.

According to the press release, DWM first fell ill on Feb.11. He was rushed to the nearest hospital four days later because his feverish condition had shown no signs of improvement. On Feb.20, it was feared that the young boy had contracted bird flu. He passed away the next day.

The ministry had deployed officials to screen the family house and but could not find definitive indications confirming bird flu.

To date, the ministry has recorded 186 bird flu cases in Indonesia, with 154 cases resulting in death. Bird flu first became a scare across the country in 2005.

Taiwan Junior Surf Champion Rory Macdonald Signs with Quiksilver

Taipei, Taiwan (February 22, 2012) — Quiksilver, the world’s leading surf wear and boardriding company, is proud to announce the signing of a 3 year contract with 12 year old junior surf champion Rory Macdonald from Taiwan.

Born and raised in Taiwan’s southern town of Kenting, Rory was introduced to surfing by his father at the age of 3. His surfing talent and trilingual language abilities (Mandarin, Taiwanese & English) quickly established him as the grommet to watch on the island. Competing in local contests since the age of 6, he is a well known face around the resort town. “I like surfing in Kenting; the waves are different every time but I still surf it no matter what. It’s all good practice,” Rory said.

Since 2010, Rory has won 8 championships including 4 titles in Junior Short Board and 4 titles in Men’s Short Board divisions; becoming one of the most accomplished young surfers in Taiwan. His recent performances at the 2011 Quiksilver ASC Taitung County International Surf Challenge and the 2012 Riyuewan Open in Hainan, China, also proved his tremendous potential to the international surfing community.

“Having followed Rory’s progress over the last few years it is fantastic to now welcome him to the Quiksilver family. Rory rips and is blessed with a heap of natural talent. There is no doubt that he will be a big part of the surfing future of Taiwan”, said Quiksilver Taiwan’s General Manager Clayton Wholley.

As part of his sponsorship agreement, Rory will travel overseas to numerous international contests this year – the first being the Asian Surfing Championship sanctioned Oakley Pro 2012, to be held at Canggu in Bali this April.

When asked how he felt about joining Quiksilver, Rory said “I’d be stoked to be able to become a pro surfer, and cannot wait to travel and surf around the world…. I want to keep challenging myself and improving.”

Bali police take Kerobokan prison after riot

As many media outlets report, 100 members of the Bali police have re-taken Kerobokan prison after a riot. The riot started at around 11pm with guards subsequently fleeing the prison and losing control of the facility after inmates allegedly threatened them with improvised weapons. The riot follows an incident on Sunday afternoon when a smaller riot broke out after a prisoner was stabbed. It is still unknown whether the last night’s riot had stemmed from that prior incident.

Unlike foreign prisons Kerobokan's security is weak and local 'Laskar Bali' inmates who were previously incarcerated intimidated guards into giving them the run of the place.

The heavily armed police detachment was able to regain control of the jail without injury to officers or to foreign prisoners.

Balivillascafe says - This prison is a joke. Its not a real prison, really just a holding pen for unfortunate people. Without proper sanitation, habitation, security and food. Not surprising that these incidents can happen and all hell breaks loose.

Billabong to slash and burn outlets to save cash

Surfwear retailer Billabong International Ltd. says it will shed 400 jobs worldwide and close dozens of loss-making stores as it tries to restore its flagging fortunes in a tough retail market.

The cost-cutting drive and a decision to sell half of its Nion Inc. watches and accessories brand was announced as the company Friday reported a 71 per cent dive in six-month earnings to 16 million Australian dollars ($17.3 million).

Billabong has 677 stores worldwide and says it could close between 100 and 150 stores that are losing money or performing weakly. It hope to reduce its annual costs by AU$30 million.

The company earlier this week received a takeover offer from private equity company TPG Capital, but said it was uncertain the deal would go ahead.

One of the secret spots for Bali expats is / was the pristine beach at Pura Masuka on the Bukit peninsula.
Most people, including expats may not know the name, Pura Masuka, but they know the spot. Pura Masuka is the name of the temple located in the center of the south coast on the Bukit peninsula. Looking a map of Bali its the most southern part of the mainland.

Getting to Pura Masuka means driving up Jl. Uluwatu in the direction of Dreamland and taking the side-street off to the left-side when the main road takes a sharp right turn (looking for signs saying Pura Masuka). Ten minutes of following narrow tarmacked roads, which just a few years ago were dirt roads gets you to a parking area next to a new hotel / villa complex. There is now an electric elevator that transports hotel guests down to the beach and a couple of  'beach clubs' on the beach. Back in 2005 for example the only activity on the each would be a couple of tourists and a local fisherman.

Getting down to the beach for those of us who aren't staying in the hotel means descending via a long, slippery set of steps. Its good exercise and the views are stunning.

The beach at Pura Masuka is still virtually unspoilt till now. When the tide is out you have plenty of space to enjoy. This beach is within 30 minutes of Kuta.
