Indonesia’s Pro Juniors to Compete for Wildcard Spots in the 2012 Oakley ASP World Pro Junior Championships Bali on October 5

1 October 2012, Nusa Dua-Bali:  Indonesia’s junior (under 21 years of age) surfers will be getting the chance of a lifetime on October 5th as they gather at Canggu Beach in Bali to compete in the trials event for two wildcard spots in the 2012 Oakley ASP World Pro Junior Championships, scheduled to run from the 6th to 17th October in Bali, Indonesia.

Raising the stakes even higher, for the first time in history the winner of the Oakley event will also be crowned the 2012 ASP World Pro Junior Champion. The two lucky wildcard winners will not only have the opportunity to take on the world’s best but also to take out the title on home soil.

In last year’s Oakley World Pro Junior Bali, Darmaputra Tonjo from Legian made headlines by first knocking out number 2 seed Nat Young, then going on to eliminate number 1 seed Jack Freestone in his very next heat.   He was finally stopped in Round 4 by Hawaii’s Ezekial Lau, but had the distinction of being the first Balinese surfer to advance past Round 3 in an ASP pro junior event.

Tonjo is now 21 so will not be competing this year, but his team mate Putra Hermawan from Nusa Lembongan is keen to get into the fray and better Tonjo’s performance.

“I’m confident I can make it through the trials and into the main event,” said Hermawan.  “I’ve got a pretty good track record at Canggu and at Keramas, I got second in the trials last year, so I know I can do well.  I know the boys are really excited to compete and get the wildcards, so they all will be surfing their best.”  When asked how it would feel to equal or better Tonjo’s result last year and take down the world’s top pro juniors, he replied, “For sure I would be very proud of myself, and that is my goal.  To knock out the world’s number 1 in my own backyard is my motivation.  I can’t wait to get out there!”

Hermawan is no stranger to the podium and championship crowns, as he has a 2009 ISC Junior Championship, a 2010 ISC Pro Junior Championship, and a 2010 ISC Open Championship to his credit already, so expect to see him going big at every opportunity as he chases first a wildcard and then another championship victory.

The field of some 20+ Indonesian surfers under 21 years old are standing by and frothing for action, waiting for the horn to blow the start of the first heat of the trials at Canggu Beach on Friday October 5th at approximately 7:30 am.

Come on out to witness all the action in the trials on October 5th, and then watch the Indonesian wildcards take on the world’s best in the main event that starts on October 6th, where the world’s best under 21 year old men and women from Australasia, Africa, Hawaii, Europe, Japan, North America and South America compete for the ASP World Championship title and the $130,000 prize purse.

The Oakley ASP World Pro Junior is supported by surfermag.com, Komune Resort and Beach Club Bali, Pullman Bali Legian Nirwana, New Era, BIMC Hospital, the Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championships, and Odysseys Surf School, with media support by indosurflife.com, Surftime Magazine, and Lines Magazine

Surfer-surfer Indonesia Pro Junior Siap Bertanding Memperebutkan Wildcard Untuk Event Oakley ASP World Pro Junior Championship 2012  di Bali, 5 Oktober Mendatang

Rip Curl Asia Welcomes Usman Trioko To The Team

Rip Curl Asia Welcomes Usman Trioko To The Team

September 20, 2012

Kuta, Bali – Rip Curl Asia is proud to announce the addition of Lombok's most talented surfer, Usman Trioko, to its already stacked surf team.

Hailing from one of the world's most legendary lefthand reef breaks, Trioko is one of Indonesia's top freesurfers and arguably one of the best barrel riders in the world. Trioko has made a name for himself as the top local surfer at Lombok's longest barrel, often outperforming many of the best professionals who come from all over the world to get shacked at his local break.

The 17-year-old goofyfooter has avoided contests in favor of catching big swells at the world-class reef breaks near his home in West Nusa Tenggara, and scoring some of the longest barrels on the planet. Trioko's performances at his home break are truly the stuff of legend. He's been known to pull into 20-second barrels across the entire reef and emerge from the tube well past the infamous and dangerously shallow “Grower Section.”

Lately, Trioko has also been fine tuning his rail and aerial surfing, and now possesses a potent backhand attack in righthanders as well. For Usman, who has been without a sponsor for the past eight months, the deal with Rip Curl represents an important milestone in his young professional career.

“I've had no sponsor for a long time now, so I'm really stoked to have the support of such a respected company like Rip Curl,” Usman said. “I want to thank Rip Curl and all my friends and family who have supported me and my surfing. I'm looking forward to surfing and searching for new spots with guys like Garut and Oney and everyone else on the Rip Curl Asia team.”

Rip Curl SEA Marketing Manager James Hendy said that getting Trioko onto the Rip Curl Asia surf team was a no-brainer, and hinted that we could possibly see Trioko receive a prestigious invitation to the 2013 Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang Invitational, a gathering of the best tube riders on Earth.

“Part of Rip Curl's DNA and one of our main brand values is The Search, and Usman represents this value in every conceivable way,” Hendy said. “He is an incredible tube rider from a remote region of Indonesia who has honed his skills surfing on broken boards left behind by traveling surfers. We're stoked to be in a position to support Usman, giving him the products he needs to live his Search in the best possible way.”

SINGAPORE, SEPTEMBER 25, 2012 – The DC Tour made its rounds in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand between September 4 and 15, with four DC Australia Skateboarders and four DC Global BMX riders from the USA on the forefront of the tour.

The two-week tour started off on September 4 in Jakarta, Indonesia, and saw the riders visiting key Skate Parks in Jakarta, and Bandung, as well as several street spots which DC Indonesia riders frequently visited, including Senayan Big 5 Stairs, and Taman Proklamasi.

The visit to Buquiet Skate Park in Bandung boasted a particularly strong turn-out with about 500 local riders showing up in full force at the demo and signing session.

Both Skate and BMX support were equally strong in Indonesia. Many local riders have been loyal fans of our Global BMX riders – magazine features and articles from the past were brought to the autograph session for signing, proving that the DC Global BMX team riders’ popularity holds sway in S.E.Asia.

The DC Malaysia crew welcomed the tour group with much gusto on September 7.

All eight athletes visited the DC KLCC store, where over 100 fans turned up to get their posters autographed, as well as to have their photos taken with their favourite riders.

The tour group also paid a visit to Shah Alam Skate Park and Putrajaya Challenge Park, where avid riders gathered to interact with our riders. Freebies like tees, skate decks, and stickers were given out at demo sessions.

The tour ended off in Phuket, Thailand, where it joined force with the Quiksilver Open to make an action-packed mega event along the world-renown Patong beach.

Matt-black DC ramps, which are synonymous with the brand, were set up by the beach for the athletes to do demos and interact with the crowd.

Members of the media from all three countries gave strong coverage of the tour and all eight athletes. The tour was well-featured across all channels of media - television, radio, magazines, print press, and online media.

With such rousing response from each country the tour visited, CEO of Quiksilver/DC South Asia Paul Hutson said, “The tremendous reception for the tour in all three countries it visited was amazing – we are thankful for the overwhelming support from the fans. It is evident that our athletes have a strong fan base here, and by allowing them a chance to meet their idols, we believe that it would spur them on and give them more reason to want to excel in actions sports. This is ideal as we want to build a stronger action sports culture in our region, as we’re able to support it with the best products in the marketplace.”

“This is just the start of many other future events that DC will bring to the region, so there is much more to anticipate,” he added.

“The DC Tour in South East Asia was an amazing opportunity for the Global BMX team to participate in. We were excited to see the level of support from fans at such a high level. The people of Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand were great hosts, and made our time in each country truly unforgettable,” added Mike Aland, Marketing Director of DC Shoes USA and team manager of the Global BMX and Auto teams.

“Perhaps equally as impressive was the emerging action sports scene in the region, with some great talent among local riders. We are excited to see some serious talent coming from there to the world stage in the future. What's more, we are even more excited that DC is on the forefront of introducing, and fostering action sports in the region.”

Competitors Locked In For Upcoming Oakley ASP World Junior Championships Bali
KERAMAS, Bali/Indonesia (Wednesday, September 26, 2012) – The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 2012 Men's and Women's World Junior Champions will be decided next month at the Oakley ASP World Junior Championships Bali. The ASP's seven regions including: Australasia, Africa, Hawaii, Europe, Japan, North America and South America have used their respective Pro Junior series' to determine their regional representatives at the event who will now battle it out to be the first ASP World Champions crowned in Indonesia.
Andrew Doheny (USA) finished runner-up at this event in Bali last year and will be looking to use his exciting brand of surfing to push for another solid result next month.
"Last year's event was a good experience," Doheny said. "The waves were really fun and I had a great time, doing well in the contest made the trip that much better. I'm really exited to go back and try my best in the contest and get some good surf. I like going to Bali it's always fun times there."
Maxime Huscenot (FRA), 2009 ASP World Junior Champion, will be competing as a junior for the last time at the Oakley ASP World Junior Championships Bali. Husenot's smooth style and competitive experience will see him enter the event as one of the favourites to take it out.
"I'm feeling good and have good boards at the moment," Huscenot said. "I've been working hard lately, I've trained physically since last year and I have a good rhythm going. This is my last opportunity as a junior so I'm going to Bali with hopes of clinching the World Title! I know the wave pretty well and it is very similar to my home wave in Reunion Island."
Rosanny Alvarez (VEN) will be the first surfer from Venezuela to compete at the ASP World Junior Championships after she claimed the prestigious ASP South America Pro Junior title.
"I am very excited to have secured the ASP South American Junior Title, that is unheard of for my country," said Alvarez. "Here in Venezuela we do not have much support for travel and to compete, but the president of the Venezuelan Federation of Surf is seeking sponsorship for me to represent my country for the first time in the Oakley ASP World Junior Championships and I believe everything will be okay. Already I am counting the days traveling to Bali!"
Matt Banting (AUS), the 18-year-old from Port Macquarie, Australia has had a breakthrough year in 2012. Banting started the year with a bang, winning both the Pro Junior and the men's divisions at the prestigious Australian Open Of Surfing and now sits at a very respectable 65th on the ASP Men's World Rankings.
"I watched the World Juniors at Narrabeen for years when I was a grom," Banting said. "I watched guys like Adriano De Souza and Jordy Smith in the finals and it's always been a goal to win one myself. Bali is a great venue! It has a wide variety of waves, great food, great people and the water is warm. My preparation has been good as I've just come off the Europe World Tour leg. It's good to get home, tweak a few things and reset for Bali."
Nao Omura (JPN) who finished equal 5th at last year's Oakley ASP World Junior Championships is looking forward to returning to Bali and competing on the world stage.
"I'm so happy and excited to be in the Oakley ASP World Junior Championships again!" Omura said. "The waves in Bali are always fun, with both barrels and rippable waves. I've been following the ASP Star events because my home doesn't have much waves, and I'm training hard at home for the competition."
The Oakley ASP World Junior Championships Bali will run from October 6 – 17. For LIVE webcast and event videos and more check www.oakleyprojunior.com

Quiksilver SEA Congratulates Annissa Flynn, Arif “Mencos” Nurhidayat and Decha Sithidej for their 2012 Asian Surfing Championship Crowns

( English & Indonesian)

24 September 2012, Jakarta-Indonesia:  Quiksilver SEA is very proud to congratulate 14 year old Annissa Flynn from Thailand for receiving the 2012 Asian Surfing Championship Women’s Division crown, Arif “Mencos” Nurhidayat from Indonesia for his second consecutive ASC Longboard Division crown, and Decha Sithidej of Thailand for his second ASC Master’s Division crown at the recent Asian Surfing Championship Awards presentation held at Patong Beach in Phuket Thailand on Saturday night September 15th.

Annissa Flynn sealed her 2012 Women’s Championship bid with a Women’s Division win earlier in the day at the 4th annual Quiksilver Open Phuket, after also winning the Grommet (under 16 years of age) division as the sole female competitor in the final.  She has only been surfing for 5 years and has rapidly become a serious competitive surfer, besting women surfers many years her senior.  Flynn competed in all 7 ASC sanctioned events during the 2012 season and won 3 of them, two in Malaysia and the final event in Thailand, and is sponsored by Roxy.

Arif “Mencos” Nurhidayat hails from the small beach town of Batukaras in West Java, Indonesia and is just 23 years old.  He won the Longboard Division of the Quiksilver Open Phuket to earn his second Asian Surfing Championship Longboard title. There were only two longboard events for the 2012 ASC tour season, the first being the Quiksilver Open West Java, and Mencos won both of them with his exciting mix of old school and new school styles.

Decha Sithidej is one of the key figures in the development of Phuket’s surfing community and wins his second ASC Master’s title having competed in but one event during the 2012 ASC season. He competed in two events in Malaysia, one in Indonesia, and the final event in Thailand.  A Patong Beach local, Decha owns Andaman Sea Surf, a surfboard rental business at the beach where the Quiksilver Open is held as well as the Baan Andaman Sea Surf accommodations.

Quiksilver’s Sports Marketing Manager Tipi Jabrik was delighted to have such honor bestowed on three members of his team, saying,“I’m naturally very proud of the achievement of these three surfers, and I love having them on the team.  Not only because they are champions but because they are also great individuals and a very positive example for other surfers in South East Asia.”

He went on to say, “It was especially exciting to have 5-time Women’s World Tour Champion Stephanie Gilmore handing Annissa her trophy and congratulating her. Annissa is well on her way to becoming a world class surfer, and with us supporting and encouraging her she could be joining the world tour someday for sure.”

“Mencos is the most creative and unpredictable longboarder I have ever seen, especially being so young.  Whenever he paddles out you never know what will happen…except that he will be winning the contest.  He is such a great ambassador for Quiksilver as he has a true waterman’s image, so I’m stoked to have him on my team.”

“Decha is such a great example of a surfer helping other surfers.  He is always at the beach, surfing or helping others to surf, spreading the stoke and enjoying life, and still regularly competes in not only the Masters but also the Longboard and Open Divisions.  My congratulations goes to all of them!”

Purnie
