Bali buys 10,000 tons of rice

Travel safe in Bali - Travel insurance from Worldnomads.com

by The Jakarta Post

Bali buys 10,000 tons of rice

Denpasar: To secure the island’s rice stocks for the coming month, the Bali office of the State Logistics Agency (Bulog) has procured 10,000 tons of rice imported from Vietnam and India.

Andi Abdul Rahman, head of Bulog’s service division, said that the agency now had 14,900 tons of rice in its warehouses.

“Bulog will buy a further 5,000 tons of rice from East Java in the near future,” Rahman said.

“Rice imports are an inevitable policy taken by Bulog to secure the island’s food supplies since local harvest yields have been decreasing over the last few years,” he added.

This has been caused by a substantial decrease in productive farms in Bali as they make way for various development programs.

In 1999, Bali had 86,071 hectares of rice fields. In 2011, this had reduced to only 39,022 hectares.

Balivillascafe says:  There are all kinds of tipping points and maybe this is another major one for Bali. As the number of people living here increases and the amount of farming land decreases, Bali now has to import rice. Sad situation and a big indicator along the 'progress highway'. Maybe in 50 years time Bali will have to import rice farmers from Thailand to stand at the edge of rice fields for tourists.

Solution: 1. Ban the sale of land to foreigners. 2. Ban the wholesale development of ricefields. 3. Make rice farming more attractive by subsidizing farmers.

Surf Memorabilia and Art Auction Raises Over $12,000 to help preserve Uluwatu

July 23, 2012

Uluwatu, Bali – On a historic night, Rip Curl and Uluwatu Surf Villas successfully raised over $12,000 for local environmental organization Eco Surf Rescue Uluwatu (ESRU) during their surfing art and memorabilia auction on Saturday.

Mega Semadhi and his famous Padang padang picture taken by Jason Childs

Over 350 guests attended the auction fundraiser, expertly hosted by SurfTime Magazine Editor-In-Chief Matt George, and held at the beautiful Uluwatu Surf Villas overlooking the Indian Ocean. All proceeds from the auction will help fund ESRU clean-up projects and environmental initiatives at world-famous Uluwatu beach, one of the greatest surf spots in the world.

Among the prized items auctioned off Saturday night was original artwork by American artist Kevin Walsh, rare collectable surfboards, and historic surfing memorabilia. The two items fetching the highest bids of the evening were the Dream Sessions, where the winning bidders get to surf the world-famous waves at Uluwatu and Padang Padang for one hour with just a few friends. The Uluwatu surf session with lifeguard-enforced crowd control sold for an impressive 9.1 million IDR (over $1,200 US). The one-hour empty Padang Padang dream session fetched an impressive 15 million IDR.

“We are proud to be part of such a successful event to help preserve the Island's most famous surf spot - Uluwatu,” said Rip Curl Southeast Asia's James Hendy. “The auction was a smashing success, both in raising money and in raising awareness about the work ESRU is doing to protect this spot.

A portion of proceeds from the sale of the Rip Curl Cup event merchandise will also be donated to ESRU, 'Were really excited and looking forward to seeing how many T-shirts and other event merchandise we can sell during the Padang Cup,” Hendy said, “so we can add to our total contribution to ESRU.

Curtis Lowe ESRU Project Manager commented - We were all there for the same reason and together we made big progress in raising the funds needed to make Uluwatu a cleaner place. We'd like to thank all the great people who came out and made it such a successful and fun night!

About Eco Surf Rescue Uluwatu

Started by a group of expat surfers in Bali, ESRU was formed when NGOs GUS Foundation and ROLE Foundation teamed up with the surf industry, local businesses and residents to address the pollution problems at Uluwatu. The ESRU mission is to work with locals to provide solid and liquid waste infrastructure that keeps Uluwatu clean and beautiful. We hope the world-famous surf break will one day become a pristine and healthy World Surf Heritage Area for the benefit of the Uluwatu community and future generations.

Right now ESRU is working to keep the newly installed solid waste and recycling system running. Next, ESRU will install a professionally designed and environmentally friendly liquid waste system to finally solve the problem of leaking sewage and kitchen waste water.

About the Rip Curl Cup

Now in its ninth year, the Rip Curl Cup Invitational at Padang Padang is Indonesia’s longest-running surfing competition and the only ISC tour event featuring top international surfers alongside Indonesia’s best. The field of 32 surfers is split equally between 16 of Indonesia’s all-time greatest and 16 of the world’s best barrel riders. This invitational format, along with the allure of the wave at Padang and a $10,000 prize purse, makes the Rip Curl Cup the most anticipated event of the Indonesian surf season.

For 2012, Rip Curl has extended the event waiting period to a grand total of six weeks to ensure catching an epic swell for the “one-day, one-swell” event. This year's window will run from July 15th through August 26th and the contest will be run entirely on the chosen day. When contest directors see an ideal “Padang swell” in the forecast, they will give the green light and the 32 competitors will have 24 hours to make it to Bali’s Bukit Peninsula.

Bethany Hamilton receives wildcard entry into 2012 Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang Invitational

July 25th 2012

Kuta, Bali –
Hawaiian charger Bethany Hamilton has been awarded a wildcard spot in the 2012 Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang Invitational. Hamilton, 22, from Kauai, Hawaii, will be the first-ever woman surfer to compete in the Rip Curl Cup (July 15 – August 26). The fearless goofyfooter, known for her exploits in powerful waves, is relishing the historic opportunity to surf against the best barrel riders on the planet at Bali's most revered wave.

“The Rip Curl Cup at Padang Padang is the longest running surf event in Indonesia so I am really stoked to get one of the wildcards.” said Hamilton, who arrived in Bali on Tuesday night. “It should be super sick to just go and surf Padang Padang with three other guys. Even though that is a little intimidating, I am just really excited for one day of epic barrel riding."

Hamilton earned her invitation to the Ultimate Tuberiding Contest based on her solid credentials in big, hollow surf, and her several impressive freesurfing performances out at Padang Padang in recent years. Hamilton has also charged the treacherous barrels at Teahupoo in Tahiti, and is a regular at many of the lesser-known heavy reefbreaks near her home on Kauai.

“I only surfed Padang Padang for two solid swells but I immediately fell in love with the wave,” Hamilton said, “It's challenging but then once you get a barrel you are just so exhilarated.”

In 2003 Hamilton became arguably the world's most famous surfer when, at the age of 13, she was attacked by a 14-foot tiger shark while surfing off Kauai’s North Shore. The attack left Hamilton with a severed left arm. Miraculously, just one month after the attack, she returned to the water to continue pursuing her goal of becoming a professional surfer. In 2004 Hamilton published a best-selling autobiography entitled Soul Surfer, which was later made into a major motion picture.

Hamilton has competed in many ASP Women's World Tour events since turning pro in 2007, but the 2012 Rip Curl Cup will be her first time competing against male surfers in a professional surf contest. In her opening round heat at Padang Padang, Hamilton will surf against Laurie Towner (Australia) and local surfers Mustofa Jeksen (Kuta) and Made Lana (Uluwatu).

Contest Director Pete Matthews also commented:
"We're stoked to be in a position to award Bethany a wildcard spot into the main event, we've been discussing it for a few years now after seeing her charge the waves at Padang on each visit to Bali. With the opportunity of surfing with only 3 others in the water, I'm sure Bethany is keen to dominate the uncrowded line-up and with her incredible barrel-riding skils, she will be one to watch'.

Locals Take Over Uluwatu For Rip Curl Cup Trials

July 17, 2012

Uluwatu, Bali, Indonesia – Any doubts about who sits atop the pecking order at Uluwatu were put to rest on Tuesday when local legends Made Lana and Wayan Gobleg overpowered a field of much younger adversaries to take the top two spots in the trials of the 2012 Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang Invitational.

Uluwatu legend Made Lana warming up before the Finals

As the top two finishers in the Bukit Trials, Lana and Gobleg earned wildcard berths into the main event and the chance to compete for $10,000 in prize money. They will join 30 of the world's best tube riders at Padang Padang when an ideal swell prompts contest directors to run the 2012 Rip Curl Cup, any day between now and August 26th.

The twelve surfers from Bali's famed Bukit Peninsula competing in the trials were met with a solid new swell pouring into the Uluwatu reef on Tuesday morning. Solid 6 to 8 foot sets were thundering through The Peak and Racetrack during the morning high tide, and later at Outside Corner as the tide dropped out. The 12 trialists were divided into two six-man heats, each lasting one hour. The top three placing surfers in each heat then advanced to a six-man Final, also lasting one hour.

Line Up at Uluwatu

In the Final it was Lana who stole the show and first place. The iconic goofyfooter stroked into a pair of solid eight footers and laid down his trademark deep bottom turns and vicious backside snaps under the lip. After his second long ride, which saw him kick out nearly halfway to Padang, Lana decided to paddle in to the beach with 15 minutes still remaining in the Final. He returned to the judging area set up at The Edge (Lana's infamous bar on the cliff at Uluwatu), and was met with a roar of cheers and applause from the several hundred spectators gathered in the warungs.

“It's an honor to make it back to the Padang Cup,” Lana said after receiving his ticket to the main event in front of a crowd gathered on the rooftop of The Edge bar. “The swell looks like it's going to be good all this week, so hopefully we'll get to surf Padang when it's on. I don't worry about swell forecasts, I just show up to the beach every day and see what the ocean is doing. We'll just have to wait and see.”

Gobleg and Made Lana

Gobleg meanwhile was also in blazing form, schooling the younger Bukit surfers in the art power surfing on his way to a second place finish. In his first heat Gobleg started off slow, pulling into a pair of closeout barrels through the Racetrack section. Then he moved over to Outside Corner and proceeded to catch the two biggest bombs of the trials back to back, gouging and hooking the unruly sections and throwing buckets of spray. He would earn an 8.83 and a 6.83, and combo the rest of the surfers in his heat. Gobleg was the only surfer to score a double-digit heat score in both his heats.

Although they were unable to take down their elders, the next generation of Bukit surfers proved that they will be a force to be reckoned with in the future. Third place finisher Gesit gave the masters a run for their money in the final, surfing with speed and flair on the heaving Outside Corner walls, and Koki, who finished fourth, also surfed impressively, making it out of one particularly nice barrel in the final.

“I'm proud of all the local boys who came out today and went for it,” said Gobleg. “It was difficult out there today. There was a lot of current and a lot of wind and chop. But all the boys were charging. Uluwatu was well represented today.”

This year's window will run from July 15th through Aug. 26th and the contest will be run entirely on the chosen day. When contest directors see an ideal “Padang swell” in the forecast, they will give the green light and the 32 competitors will have 24 hours to make it to Bali’s Bukit Peninsula.

Stephanie Gilmore claims 5th ASP Women’s World Title at Roxy Pro Biarritz

GRANDE PLAGE, Biarritz/France (Saturday, July 14, 2012) – Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 24, has claimed her 5th ASP Women’s World Title today, winning the Roxy Pro Biarritz over Tyler Wright (AUS), 18.

“I woke up this morning and thought it wouldn’t happen today,” Gilmore said. “But as the day progressed, and things fell into place, I began to believe it could happen. France is such a special place and having so many people on the beach watching us surf today is really emotional. I think I’m going to cry.”

Gilmore set an ASP record by being the first surfer ever to win four titles from four attempts (2007 – 2010), but fell back to ASP Women’s World No. 3 in 2011. Today’s emotional win is a reassertion of her dominance as one of the greatest icons in women’s sports.

“This year for me was all about improving my consistency and having fun with my surfing,” Gilmore said. “From when I started five years ago to where we are now, women’s surfing has improved so much. It’s an honor to be back up top as these girls push me every day and are all incredible surfers.”

Today’s incredible achievement puts the young natural-footer in an elite class of surfers to win five or more ASP World Titles, overtaking women’s records set by Freida Zamba (USA), Wendy Botha (AUS) and Lisa Andersen (USA). The only other two surfers in history to claim five or more titles are Kelly Slater (USA) and Layne Beachley (AUS).

Fellow finalist Wright put on an impressive display of surfing throughout the Roxy Pro Biarritz, besting Courtney Conlogue (USA), 19, and Coco Ho (HAW), 19, en route to today’s Finals. Unfortunately for Wright, her momentum didn’t transcend into the Final bout against Gilmore, but the tour sophomore was happy with her performance nonetheless.

“I feel pretty good,” Wright said. “I was so excited for Steph (Gilmore). She was ahead of me the whole time and with five minutes to go I was like, ‘you’ve done it!’ It’s incredible – she ripped the whole contest and didn’t lose one heat, she was shredding!”

Today’s Runner-Up finish at Grande Plage is a season best for Wright and vaults her from 5th to 3rd on the elite ASP Women’s World Championship Tour rankings.

“I’m happy with how that season went,” Wright said. “I’m just enjoying myself! I feel it’s funner when I just messing around rather than be too serious. You know I love surfing and that’s about it.”
Coco Ho (HAW) 21, was responsible for the biggest upset today when she defeated Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS), 21, in this morning’s Quarterfinals. Ho was later stopped by runner-up Tyler Wright in the semis, not able to find the highest scoring rides in a wind affected line-up. Finishing equal third in Biarritz, Ho confirms her newly found rythmn after a brilliant second place in the previous event in Brazil.

Uluwatu Surf Villas and Rip Curl Present: Artist Of The Search Exhibition and Uluwatu Fundraiser

July 12, 2012

Uluwatu, Bali, Indonesia – Uluwatu Surf Villas and Rip Curl will host an evening of ocean-inspired art, music and film above the cliffs of Uluwatu on the evening of Saturday, July 21st to benefit local environmental organization Eco Surf Rescue Uluwatu.

Original artwork by Rip Curl's Artist of the Search, Kevin Walsh, will be on exhibit and available for auction. Don't miss this opportunity to take home an exclusive hand-made piece by one of the surfing world's most dynamic young artists.

Come join surfing luminaries and the surfers in this year's Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang Invitational as we gather for what will undoubtedly be the highlight of the opening week of the Rip Curl Cup waiting period. The evening will feature live music from Andy Six String, catered food, and full bar service. The program will also include the Asia premiere of Taylor Steele's latest film, “Here & Now,” as well as a series of film shorts from this year's Ombak Bali Film Festival.

Admission is IDR150,000 and includes dinner. The festivities will begin at 5 pm. All proceeds from the event will benefit Eco Surf Rescue Uluwatu (ESRU), the environmental organization creating sustainable waste management solutions for Uluwatu beach.

To learn more about ESRU or to make a donation, check out: www.ecosurfrescue.moonfruit.com.

About Kevin Walsh & Artist Of The Search

Based in the iconic California surf town of Santa Cruz, Kevin Walsh, 28, has been producing some of the surfing world's most prized artwork for over a decade. His unique ocean-inspired designs have graced everything from Maverick's guns to Jack Johnson concert posters. Now Bali's legendary surf breaks of Uluwatu and Padang Padang are the focus of Kevin's Artist Of The Search T-Shirt collection, designed right here on the Island of the Gods.

When you buy any Rip Curl Artist Of The Search merchandise, including the 2012 Padang Cup event T-Shirt, you are also helping to protect the waves at world-famous Uluwatu and Padang Padang. For every Kevin Walsh designed Artist Of The Search T-shirt sold, Rip Curl will donate a portion of proceeds to Eco Surf Rescue Uluwatu (ESRU), the environmental organization creating sustainable waste management solutions at Uluwatu beach. Last year Rip Curl donated IDR 54 million (US$5,465) to ESRU from the sale of the 2011 Padang Cup T-shirt. Purchase your piece of surfing history and help us ensure that the perfect tubes of Uluwatu and Padang Padang are clean and healthy for generations to come.
