Countdown To Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang Trials Begins

July 4, 2012

Padang Padang, Bali, Indonesia – Twelve of the best surfers from Bali's famed Bukit Peninsula are primed for the trials of the 2012 Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang Invitational. They will be competing for two local wildcard spots in the main event. The Rip Curl Cup trials will be held over one day between July 1 and July 14, either at Padang Padang or Uluwatu, depending on swell conditions.

Local Bukit surfer, Wayan "Gobleg" Suyadnya.

The 12 surfers will be divided into two six-man expression session heats, each lasting 90 minutes. At the end of the two heats, the top two standout surfers, as determined by a panel of ISC judges and Rip Curl representatives, will receive entry into the main event and the chance to compete for $10,000 in prize money.

The 12 local trialists are: Made Lana, Wayan Gobleg Suyadnya, Made Lapur, Blacky, Tumbling, Dag-Dag, Koki, Loyo, Manik, Koko, Alik, and Teko.

“This is an amazing opportunity for the local groms,” said Uluwatu surfing legend Wayan Gobleg Suyadnya. “I know they're all very excited about the chance to make it into the main event. It's all they're talking about.”

The two winners from the local trials will join 30 of the world's best tube riders for the opening ceremony for the 2012 Rip Curl Cup on July 15th. The opening ceremony will be held at Padang Padang beach and marks the first day of the six-week event waiting period. Rip Curl has extended the contest waiting period to an unprecedented six weeks, beginning July 15th and running through Aug. 26th, to ensure catching a contest-worthy swell.

Among the 16 international surfers confirmed to compete in 2012 are Chris Ward (USA), Jamie O'Brien (Hawaii), Dean Brady (Australia), and Bruno Santos (Brazil). Indonesia will be represented by two-time Rip Curl Cup champion Made “Bol” Adi Putra, Rizal Tanjung, Marlon Gerber, Garut Widiarta, Dede Suryana and defending champion Lee Wilson, among others.

About the Rip Curl Cup

Now in its ninth year, the Rip Curl Cup Invitational at Padang Padang is Indonesia’s longest-running surfing competition and the only ISC tour event featuring top international surfers alongside Indonesia’s best. The field of 32 surfers is split equally between 16 of Indonesia’s all-time greatest and 16 of the world’s best barrel riders. This invitational format, along with the allure of the wave at Padang and a $10,000 prize purse, makes the Rip Curl Cup the most anticipated event of the Indonesian surf season. For 2012, Rip Curl has extended the event waiting period to a grand total of six weeks to ensure catching an epic swell for the “one-day, one-swell” event. This year's window will run from July 15th through Aug. 26th and the contest will be run entirely on the chosen day. When contest directors see an ideal “Padang swell” in the forecast, they will give the green light and the 32 competitors will have 24 hours to make it to Bali’s Bukit Peninsula.
