Indonesian government - We’ve blocked 1m porn sites

The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Mon, 02/06/2012 3:05 PM
The Communications and Information Ministry claims that it had blocked nearly 1 million sites that carry pornographic content.

Communication and Information Minister Tifatul Sembiring said that censorship on porn sites was in line with the government’s commitment to securing sites accessed by Indonesians and building a more positive character for the nation.

“We’ve blocked more than 983,000 porn sites. We will keep doing it,” Tifatul said during a seminar on Healthy and Safe Use of the Internet at Pullman Hotel in Jakarta on Monday. The seminar was held ahead of the International Safe Internet Day, which falls on Friday.

Tifatul added that the censorship would in turn improve people’s ethics in using the Internet for positive purposes.

According to Tifatul, Indonesia is home to 45 million Internet users with growth in household computer use reaching 25.8 percent per year.

“Censorship and filters will not work if the people’s ethics in using the Internet are low and people prefer to look for porn sites,” he said as quoted by kompas.com.

The government has banned online pornography since 2010. The Communications and Information Ministry ordered local service providers to block access to pornographic websites, a decision that brought controversy because experts doubted its effectiveness.

Balivillacafe says - This will not work for a couple of reasons. 1. The majority of Indonesians like pornography and think its funny, 2. The #1 place to buy pornographic material is right outside the government building in Jakarta, 3) Indonesia doesn't have the technical capability (if anyone does) to block all porn sites. Existing sites can be mirrored and put up in a different name in no time.
