Abu Bakar Ba'asyir has been jailed for 15 years in Jakarta for his involvement with terror organisation for supporting a terrorist training camp in Aceh. Ba'asyir is widely suspected of being the spiritual leader of terror group Jemaah Islamiah, responsible for the deadly Bali bombings of 2002 and 2005.
Here in Bali expats do not seem to be talking about Ba'asyir's conviction yet, maybe they will when the fact settles in. Many expats in Bali rely on the tourist industry for a living. Another bombing would seriously damage people's economy and put some out of business totally.
So far so good. There does not seem to be an increase in tension regarding possible terrorist attacks. People here do not tend to mention this sort of thing in conversation because they probably think its all in the past. Fingers crossed.
