Traffic in Bali is a getting worse and has been for years. Over the last 5 years the number of motorbikes has doubled.
What has been done to alleviate the conjestion?
Not much. The Sunset Rd has been widened slightly and re-surfaced. Jl. Legian has a very nice new brick surface and sidewalk. Money has been spent. Simpang Siur, top end of Sunset Rd, 5 points and the airport area are always a headache.
What needs to be done?
South Bali needs a mass transit system like the one in Bangkok. Elevated light railway system. There are simply too many people travelling everyday using too many vehicles on roads that are not big enough. Until a mass transit system is built the situation will get rapidly worse.
How is it now?
Recently the cops have been positioned on the Bypass to wave through traffic in peak periods. The programming on the traffic lights on the Bypass is totally screwed. The solution is to to a study and re-program them. If you avoid peak traffic times it is still possible to get from the airport to the top of the Sunset Rd in about 20-25 minutes.
