 Thirteen-year-old Andre Anwar wins his first Rip Curl GromSearch in heavy conditions at Lakey Peak, Sumbawa

Lakey Peak, Sumbawa, Indonesia – In a stunning display of big-wave power surfing well beyond his years, young Andre Anwar has won the second stop of the 2012 Rip Curl GromSearch Southeast Asia Series in perfect 4-to-6-foot waves at world-famous Lakey Peak, Sumbawa. For Andre, who is only 13 years old but has been competing in the Under-16 division of GromSeach since he was nine, his first-ever GromSearch victory was a big relief.

“I was telling everyone that this year I was going to win,”said Andre, after being soaked with Coca-Cola by his friends on the winner's podium. “I knew after the Final that I was either second or first. When they told me I won I was so happy.”

Andre was the form surfer throughout the day-long event, surfing with reckless abandon and showing no fear in waves that were easily double and triple overhead for the groms.

“Right from his first wave of the Final you could see how hungry he was,” head judge Mark Clift said. “Andre was surfing faster than everyone else by a fair bit. He was going flat-out on every turn.”

In the Under-16 Final, Andre ran up against an on-fire Bomar Arya Prasetia, 15, who was surfing in his first GromSearch Final. Andre caught the first wave of the Final and linked a series of vicious top to bottom turns for a 6.8. Bomar answered back immediately with a huge first turn, followed by a strong cutback, and finished with a reverse foam bounce for a 7.8. But Andre would go on to score an 8.0 for a wave with four huge maneuvers, including a massive no-grab air followed by another big turn. Andre claimed victory with a total heat score of 14.8, narrowly defeating Bomar's 13.8. In third place was Febby Andre, 14, who pushed his surfing level to a new personal best, followed by M. Nur Allien, 16, in fourth place.

“Pretty much everyone in the two finals saved their best for last,” Clift said. “They were showing us stuff in the finals we hadn't seen before all day.”

As the top two placing under-16 surfers at Lakey Peak, Andre and Bomar have qualified for the GromSearch Southeast Asia Finals, Oct. 20-21 at Kuta Beach, Bali. They will square off against the top groms from GromSearch events in Java, Bali and Thailand for the opportunity to compete in the Rip Curl International Final, held in conjunction with the Rip Curl Pro ASP World Tour event at Australia's legendary Bells Beach. It will be Andre's third time competing in the regional final in Bali and the first for Bomar.

In the Under-14 Final it was Irfan J. who finally got to taste victory at the Lakey Peak GromSearch after finishing in third place last year and fourth place the year before. Irfan came charging out of the gates in the Final, scoring an 8.0 and a 7.0 on back-to-back waves with a flurry of vertical turns in critical sections. Irfan's rapid fire scores left the rest of the field comboed, and essentially spelled victory within the first eight minutes of the Final. Second place finisher Sah J. charged valiantly, but couldn't rack up scores quite as high as Irfan's. In third place was Andre Anwar's cousin Ompu Anwar, 11, and in fourth place was Agus Salim, 13.

“I don't know if I'll surf in the Under-16 division next year,” Irfan said, still bleeding from a fresh reef gash on his leg after hitting the reef during the contest. “Right now I'm just so happy. I can't wait to ride my new board.”

Winners Andre and Irfan each received a brand new DHD surfboard from Rip Curl, which they will no doubt use to further their tube riding skills out at big Lakey Peak. Rip Curl team rider Garut Widiarta said he was impressed with how the Lakey groms tackled the large surf and they have set a very high standard for the remaining GromSearch surfers in Bali and Thailand to meet.

“They weren't scared of those waves at all today,” said Garut, who also helped judge the contest. “They were choosing the biggest sets, and it was a solid six-foot out there. The level was way higher than last year.”

In the Expression Session, Gazlin Hamzah earned the Skullcandy Best Trick award for his massive air reverse, which he lofted over a dumping Lakey Peak lip and landed smoothly. Meanwhile, Mansur Ramlin took home the Skullcandy Best Wave award. Both surfers earned Skullcandy headphones and a Rip Curl prize pack for their dazzling display of surfing in the high-stakes conditions.

“Everybody was charging so hard,” said event judge and Rip Curl team rider Pepen Hendrik. “It looked like Pipeline for the groms out there today.”

About the Rip Curl GromSearch

Already in its ninth year, Rip Curl’s GromSearch series is the longest running competitive junior surfing series in South East Asia, having started in Bali in 2004. GromSearch has produced several of Indonesia’s best surfers, including 2010 Indonesian Open Champion Putra Hermawan and wunderkind Oney Anwar, the only Indonesian to win an ASP pro junior event, the Dripping Wet Pro Junior 2010 in Sydney Australia.

Lakey Peak, Sumbawa, Indonesia - Dalam tampilan yang menakjubkan berselancar dengan baik di tenaga ombak besar jauh melampaui prestasinya di tahun-tahun sebelumnya, Andre Anwar, 13 th  telah memenangkan pemberhentian kedua dari Seri Kejuaraan surfing Rip Curl GromSearch Asia Tenggara 2012 yang sempurna  di ketinggian  gelombang 4-ke-6-kaki yang terkenal di dunia yaitu di Lakey Peak, Sumbawa. Untuk Andre, yang hanya 13 tahun tapi telah bersaing di divisi bawah-16 dari GromSeach sejak ia berusia sembilan tahun,  ini merupakan kemenangan pertama kalinya pada Rip Curl GromSearch Series.

"Saya memberitahu semua orang bahwa tahun ini aku akan menang," kata Andre, setelah direndam dengan Coca-Cola oleh teman-temannya di podium pemenang. "Saya tahu setelah final bahwa saya terbaik kedua atau pertama. Ketika mereka mengatakan bahwa aku menang aku sangat bahagia. "


Andre  adalah surfer dengan karakter dari  seluruh acara sepanjang hari,  ia berselancar dengan sembrono dan tidak menunjukkan rasa takut dalam gelombang yang dengan mudah  dia lewati.

"Sejak pecahan gelombang pertama sampai akhir Anda bisa melihat bagaimana semangatnya dia," kata kepala juri Mark Clift menegaskan. "Andre surfing lebih cepat daripada orang lain dengan sedikit wajar. Dia selalu flat-out pada setiap kesempatan. "

Di bawah-16 Final, Andre melawan- Bomar Arya Prasetia, 15 tahun yang berselancar di GromSearch final pertamanya. Pada gelombang pertama Andre melakukan serangkaian  manuver dengan point 6.8. Bomar menjawab kembali segera dengan giliran pertama, dengan gelombang besar untuk 7.8. Tapi Andre akan pergi untuk mencetak angka 8,0 untuk gelombang dengan empat manuver besar, termasuk manuver no-grabair. Andre mengklaim kemenangan dengan skor total 14,8  dibelakangnya nyaris mengalahkan Bomar dengan point 13,8. Di tempat ketiga Febby Andre, 14 tahun denga tingkat berselancar baik, diikuti oleh M. Nur Allien, 16, di tempat keempat.

"Hampir semua orang di dua final terakhir  menyimpana aksi terbaik untuk yang terakhir," kata Clift. "Mereka menunjukkan kepada kita hal-hal di final yang kami tidak lihat sebelumnya sepanjang hari."

Sebagai tempat dua teratas divisi under-16 peselancar di Lakey Peak, Andre dan Bomar telah lolos ke final GromSearch Asia Tenggara, 20-21 Oktober di Pantai Kuta, Bali. Mereka akan berancang-ancang terhadap  juara groms di Jawa, Bali dan Thailand untuk kesempatan bersaing di Rip Curl GromSearch  Internasional   pada seri terakhir yang diselenggarakan bersamaan dengan acara Rip Curl Pro ASP World Tour di Pantai Bells legendaris Australia. Ini akan menjadi ketiga kalinya bagi Andre bersaing di final regional di Bali dan pertama untuk Bomar.

Di bawah-14 Akhir itu Irfan J. yang akhirnya mencicipi kemenangan di Lakey Peak GromSearch setelah finis di tempat ketiga tahun lalu dan tempat keempat tahun sebelumnya. Irfan pada saat saat terakhir sebelum final akhirnya terpacu  mencetak skor 8,0 dan 7,0 pada back-to-back gelombang bergantian yang vertikal di bagian kritis ombak. Pada dasarnya  bias dikatakan  kemenangan dalam delapan menit pertama Final. Tempat finisher kedua  adalah Sah J. yang beraksi gagah berani, tapi tidak bisa mengejar skor  yang cukup setinggi Irfan. Di tempat ketiga adalah Andre Anwar sepupu Ompu Anwar, 11, dan di tempat keempat adalah Agus Salim,13.

"Saya tidak tahu apakah saya akan surfing di divisi bawah-16 tahun depan," kata Irfan, masih berdarah dari luka karang segar pada kakinya setelah terpukul karang selama kompetisi berlangsung. "Saat ini saya sangat bahagia. Saya tidak sabar untuk naik papan baru saya. "

Pemenang Andre dan Irfan masing-masing menerima papan selancar baru  yaitu papan selancar DHD dari Rip Curl, yang tidak diragukan lagi akan digunakan mereka untuk berselancar di besarnya ombak Lakey Peak. Rip Curl tim rider Garut Widiarta mengatakan dia terkesan dengan bagaimana Lakey groms menangani ombak besar dan mereka telah menetapkan standar yang sangat tinggi untuk  peselancar GromSearch yang tersisa  yaitu di Bali dan Thailand.

"Mereka tidak takut pada gelombang besar sama sekali hari ini," kata Garut, yang juga membantu menilai kontes. "Mereka memilih set terbesar, dan  saat itu  gelombang keluar enam kaki yang kokoh di sana. Tingkat itu jauh lebih tinggi dari tahun lalu. "

Dalam Sesi Ekspresi, Gazlin Hamzah meraih penghargaan Best Trick Skullcandy untuk trik air reverse nya dan mendarat dengan lancar. Sementara itu, Mansur Ramlin membawa pulang penghargaan Best Wave Skullcandy. Kedua peselancar mendapatkan headphone Skullcandy dan paket hadiah Rip Curl  yang  telah tampilan mempesona berselancar di kondisi berisiko tinggi.

"Semua orang memiliki energi yang luarbiasa," kata para juri dan Rip Curl tim rider Pepen Hendrik. " Hari Ini tampak seperti kejuaraan Pipeline untuk  para groms."

Roxy Indonesia’s “Let The Sea Set You Free” Free Surf Day and Audition Party in Bali Draws Big Entry Numbers

3 April 2012, Kuta, Bali:  On Saturday March 31st, over 100 girls participated in the Roxy Free Surf Day and the Roxy Audition Party with Surfer Girl that was held in Bali as an introduction to Roxy’s worldwide “Let The Sea Set You Free” program, a contest where on June 15th three girls will be chosen to experience the life-changing adventure of “Living the Life of a Roxy Girl”.

Ultimately, Roxy is looking for three of the most intriguing, fun, engaging, daring and media savvy girls in the world between the ages of 18-28 to experience this life-changing adventure that includes a trip to Biarritz, France for the Roxy Pro Surf Competition, meeting the Roxy pro athletes, receive up to $5,000 USD, Roxy products, be a face and voice for Roxy, learn to surf in some of the best waves in the world and more.

In the Bali audition there were 61 entries on Saturday, with an additional 39 in Jakarta for a total of 100 girls so far.  The Indonesian Roxy Girl winner will take home a limited edition Yamaha Fino motorbike, become the Roxy Indonesia Brand Ambassador, and enjoy a fabulous 4 night - 3 day stay at The Villas in Seminyak complete with luxurious pampering at the Prana Spa.

On Saturday, Roxy Indonesia invited girls of all ages to come to Legian Beach to take surfing lessons in the morning, and then in the evening threw a party at the Surfer Girl flagship store in Kuta complete with food and drinks, a makeup and photo session, meet and greet poster signing with Indonesian Roxy Girl Gemala Hanafiah, live acoustic music by Raras and a Roxy Fashion show.

The morning’s Roxy Free Surf Day session took place under clear blue skies and great learning conditions on Legian Beach, with Roxy’s Holly Monkman and Gemala Hanafiah joining the Quiksilver Surf School to assist the girls in their first surfing experience.

“I was really blown away with the amount of local girls who came down to the beach and learnt to surf with all of us, said Monkman.  “The hardest part to the day was trying to get the girls out of the ocean. It was really special to see them all laughing and enjoying their first surfing experience together, and we couldn’t have had more fun.”

17-year-old Maria from Bali agreed with Monkman, saying, “I had the best time out there and I didn’t want to stop.  I’m definitely going to keep trying to learn after this, because I really want to become a surfer.  Some of my friends have tried it before, so that’s why I wanted to try. I hope we can all become good surfers someday.”

The evening’s Roxy Audition Party took place at the Surfer Girl store on the main street of Jalan Legian, with the main goal (in addition to just plain having fun) of providing an easy way for the potential Roxy Girl candidates to enter the “Let The Sea Set You Free competition by giving them their own personal photos.  A makeup room was set up courtesy of Etude where the girls could get prepared for their photos session, dressed up in the latest fashions from Roxy.

The photos will be uploaded to the Roxy website and tagged to them, so they can easily copy them and enter the contest with their own professional high quality photos.
 

After their photo session, the girls a chance to meet and learn about being a Roxy Girl from Roxy Girl Gemala Hanafiah, who is also a TV presenter in Jakarta.  Hanafiah personally signed posters for the girls and gave a short talk before answering question from the audience.  She explained how being a Roxy Girl wasn’t just about surfing, but about being fun, kind-hearted, generous and adventurous, always ready for a challenge and to have fun. Hanafiah has traveled, surfed, dived, and trekked all over Indonesia and South East Asia, and is a fantastic role model for Indonesian girls.

As the party was winding down, 20-year-old Putri from Bali was asked why she came to the event and was interested in entering the contest.  She replied that she was currently in college studying to be a dentist, and when she heard about the contest from a friend that worked at Surfer Girl she was immediately interested.  “I want to take every opportunity to try something new, like traveling and seeing places and meeting new people.  Being a Roxy Girl seems like it would be the perfect experience before I start my career.”

Marketing Executive of SEA for Quiksilver and Roxy Holly Monkman was extremely pleased with the turnout for the event, saying “Our goal with Roxy’s “Let The Sea Set You Free” campaign is to share Roxy’s passion for adventure & experience with Indonesian girls as well as having a fun day at the beach and an evening party. We’ve had an over whelming response with this campaign both online and during this week-ends auditions across Bali and Indonesia.”

3 April 2012, Kuta, Bali:  Hari Sabtu, 31 Maret, lebih 100 perempuan di Bali dan Jakarta berpartisipasi mengikuti Roxy Free Surf Day dan Roxy Audition Party with Surfer Girl yang diadakan di Bali sebagai rangkaian program Roxy global “Let The Sea Set You Free” , kompetisi dimana tiga perempuan pemenang Roxy Girl “Living the Life of a Roxy Girl” akan diumumkankan pada 15 Juni.

Tim Roxy sedang mencari tiga perempuan yang paling menarik, menyenangkan, berani dan cerdas usia 18-28 tahun untuk menjalani petualangan yang akan mengubah hidup termasuk perjalanan ke Biarritz, Perancis untuk menyaksikan Roxy Pro Surf Competition, bertemu atlet-atlet Roxy, menerima uang tunai hingga Rp 50 juta, produk-produk Roxy, menjadi duta dan juru bicara Roxy, belajar surfing di beberapa tempat dengan ombak terbaik dunia dan masih banyak lagi.

Audisi di Bali diikuti oleh 61 peserta dengan tambahan 39 peserta dari audisi Jakarta dengan total 100 perempuan sejauh ini. Hari Sabtu lalu, Roxy Indonesia mengundang para perempuan dari berbagai usia untuk datang ke pantai Legian untuk belajar surfing gratis di pagi hari, dan di malam harinya Roxy mengadakan audisi dan pesta di Surfer Girl flagship store di Kuta lengkap dengan makanan dan minuman, sesi makeup dan foto studio, meet and greet dan poster signing dengan Roxy Girl Indonesia Gemala Hanafiah, live accoustic oleh Raras dan fashion show Roxy.

Pagi harinya, Roxy Free Surf Day berlangsung dibawah langit biru cerah dan ombak terbaik di pantai Legian, dimana Holly Monkman dan Gemala Hanafiah dari Roxy turut mengajari para perempuan belajar surfing pertama kalinya, didukung juga oleh Quiksilver Surf School.

“Saya benar-benar senang melihat banyaknya para perempuan Indonesia yang datang ke pantai dan belajar surfing bersama kami semua,”, ujar Holly.  “Bagian paling susah hari itu adalah membuat para perempuan itu berhenti surfing. Benar-benar luar biasa melihat semua tertawa dan menikmati pengalaman surfing pertama bersama-sama, dan kami benar-benar bersenang-senang hari itu.”

Maria, 17 tahun, asal Bali setuju dengan Holly, dia berkata “Saya benar-benar menikmati surfing dan saya tidak mau berhenti. Saya pasti akan terus belajar setelah ini, karena saya ingin menjadi surfer suatu hari nanti. Beberapa teman saya telah mencoba sebelumnya, makanya saya juga mau mencoba. Saya berharap kami dapat menjadi surfer baik suatu hari nanti.”

Malam harinya, Roxy Audition Party di jalan utama Legian, tepatnya di toko Surfer Girl bertujuan untuk mencari kandidat Roxy Girl Indonesia untuk mengikuti kompetisi “Let The Sea Set You Free” dimana mereka bisa berfoto sesuai keinginan. Ruang make up dipersembahkan oleh Etude dimana para perempuan didandani dan kemudian bisa memilih sendiri fashion terakhir dari Roxy.

Foto-foto hari itu akan diunggah ke facebook Roxy dan ditag ke masing-masing peserta dimana mereka bisa mengunduh foto tersebut untuk mengikuti kompetisi dengan foto kualitas profesional.

Seusai sesi foto, para peserta dapat kesempatan untuk bertanya seputar Roxy Girl langsung ke Gemala Hanafiah, Roxy Girl Indonesia, yang juga seorang presenter TV di Jakarta. Gemala juga menandatangani poster secara pribadi dan menjawab pertanyaan-pertanyaan dari para peserta. Dia menjelaskan bahwa menjadi Roxy Girl tidak hanya mengenai surfing, namun lebih menjadi pribadi ramah, murah hati, dan suka bersenang-senang. Gemala telah berkeliling, surfing, diving dan berjalan-jalan ke penjuru Indonesia dan Asia Tenggara, dan seorang panutan yang ideal bagi perempuan Indonesia.

Salah seorang peserta, Putri, 20 tahun dari Bali, ditanya alasan mengapa dia datang dan tertarik mengikuti kompetisi ini. Dia saat ini masih kuliah kedokteran gigi dan ketika mendengar adanya kompetisi ini dari temannya yang bekerja di Surfer Girl, dia langsung tertarik. “Saya mau mencoba hal baru dalam semua kesempatan, seperti traveling ke tempat-tempat baru dan bertemu orang-orang baru. Menjadi Roxy Girl adalah kesempatan sempurna merasakan itu semua sebelum saya memulai karir saya.”

Big Waves Bring Big Moves on Day 2 of Oakley Pro 2012 at Canggu as Round 4 is Completed

2 April 2012, Canggu-Bali: Rounds 3 and 4 of the Oakley Pro 2012 at Canggu were completed today in pumping 4-6 foot surf, with occasional bigger sets closing out the entire beach.  The big waves brought out the big moves from Indonesia’s best pro surfers, and after the final horn blew a stop to the days competition there now 8 surfers left to battle it out in tomorrows quarterfinals that are scheduled to begin at 6:30 am, conditions permitting. 

It is hoped that the competition will conclude tomorrow, as the already sizeable swell is predicted to be increasing steadily over the next several days and Canggu isn’t able to handle a much bigger swell than what was on offer today.  If conditions don’t permit completing the competition tomorrow, it will go on hold as there would still be 12 days left in the 14 day waiting period that ends on April 14.

The day’s action began at 7 am with 2011 Coca-Cola ISC champion Marlon Gerber starting his 2012 season by easily winning Heat 1 of Round 3.  He later also won his man-on-man Round 4 heat against a charging Gazali Hamzah to secure himself a spot in the quarterfinals, where he is now matched up against number 12 seeded Darmaputra Tonjo.

After his Round 4 heat win Gerber was asked for his thoughts at the start of the new season, to which he replied, “I’m really looking forward to competing this year, but for sure I feel a bit more pressure than I did at this same time last year.  I’m committed to getting another championship this year, definitely, so I’m probably thinking more about things and less relaxed.  But I’m confident too, knowing that I already have my name on that championship trophy.”

Later he was asked if he had any favorite competition sites this season he said, “No, I like them all.  After all, the approach and the goal is the same for all of them right?  Surf your best and win!  I like going backside and frontside just the same, but when there is a wave like Macaroni’s I’m super stoked because I love that wave.  I’ve been surfing it since I was 18.  But anyways, its nice to see that this year’s schedule looks more balanced with rights, lefts, and peaks, so I’m pretty stoked to be competing on the ISC. I have new boards from YU, my new board sponsor, and they are working really good, so I’m all set.”

Gerber will compete against young Darmaputra Tonjo in Quarterfinal 1, which will be no walk through, as Tonjo grabbed international headlines last year at the 2011 Oakley World Pro Junior contest where as a wildcard he took out first number 2 seeded Nat Young and then number 1 seed Jack Freestone.

One of the most hard fought battles of the day came in Heat 8 of Round 3, which saw arguably Bali’s best goofyfooters Garut Widiarta, Made “Bol” Adi Putra, and Raditya Rondi, all related by the way, with one of West Java’s best goofyfooters Asep Pahruroji from Cimaja in the heat.  “That was one crazy heat,” said Widiarta back on the beach after winning the heat. “I couldn’t believe it when I saw the heat draw.  Us Bali boys are all from the same family and Asep from Cimaja surfs Cimaja every day, which is a right just like Canggu, so I’m really kinda surprised I won it. Now I’m up against Mus (Mustofa Jeksen) in the quarters, so at least I’m up against another goofyfooter.  I didn’t have lots of luck in comps last year, so I’m hoping that my luck has changed for this year and I can get into a final or even win.”

Atraksi-Atraksi Terbaik Hadir Dengan Set Ombak Besar Sebagai Penutup Babak 4 di Hari Kedua Oakley Pro 2012, Canggu

2 April 2012, Canggu-Bali: Babak 3 dan 4 event surf Oakley Pro 2012 di Canggu selesai hari ini dengan ombak ketinggian 4-6 foot menutup set secara keseluruhan. Ombak-ombak besar yang tersaji menjadikan lanskap sempurna bagi para surfer pro terbaik Indonesia untuk bermanuver secara maksimal. Saat horn dibunyikan sebagai tanda berakhirnya babak hari ini, event menyisakan 8 surfer untuk bertanding di perempat final yang dijadwalkan besok dan dimulai pukul 6.30 pagi apabila kondisi cuaca memungkinkan.

Diharapkan kompetisi bisa selesai besok karena swell yang tersedia sekarang diprediksi akan terus naik di beberapa hari ke depan, mengingat Canggu sendiri sudah tidak mungkin menyediakan swell yang lebih besar dari yang tersaji hari ini. Jikalau kondisi tidak mengijinkan untuk diselesaikannya kompetisi esok hari, event tetap akan di hold karena masih ada 12 hari tersisa dari 14 hari waiting period yang berakhir tanggal 14 April.

Aksi di hari kedua ini dimulai pukul 7 pagi. Adalah Marlon Gerber, juara Coca Cola ISC 2011 yang mendapat giliran pertama dan memulai debut tahun 2012 ini dengan menang mudah di Heat 1 babak 3. Kemudian ia kembali memenangkan pertarungan man-on-man di heat babak 4  melawan Gazali Hamzah untuk membawanya ke perempat final, dimana ia akan melawan surfer muda tangguh yang duduk di peringkat 12, Darmaputra Tonjo.

Sesaat setelah kemenangannya di Heat babak 4, Gerber dimintai pendapatnya tentang bagaimana start musim tahun ini dan menjawab,” Saya benar-benar menunggu musim tahun ini, tapi jujur saja kali ini saya merasakan ada sedikit tekanan dibandingkan dengan tahun lalu. Tentunya saya berkomitmen untuk kembali jadi juara tahun ini, jadi mungkin yang saya bakal lakukan adalah berpikir untuk beberapa hal dan sedikit lebih relaks. Tapi di sisi lain saya juga merasa nyaman, menyadari bahwa nama saya sudah pernah ada di tropi.

 Sewaktu ditanya tentang kompetisi favoritnya di musim tahun ini, ia berujar,” tidak ada yang spesial, saya menyukai semua kompetisi. Lagian, maksud dan tujuannya juga sama saja kan? Surfing semaksimal mungkin dan menangkan kompetisinya! Buat saya, backside maupun frontside itu sama saja, tapi saat kamu dapet ombak kayak di Macaroni saya bakalan sangat antusias karena saya suka banget sama ombak itu. Saya sudah surfing di ombak itu sejak saya umur 18. Tapi ngomong-ngomong, senang rasanya melihat skedul tahun ini lebih balance dengan right, left juga peak. Dari situ saya sangat antusias sekali bertanding di kompetisi-kompetisi ISC. Saya sekarang punya board baru dari YU, sponsor papan saya yang baru, dan mereka menciptakannya dengan luar biasa. Dengan semua itu, saya siap bertarung tahun ini.

Gerber akan berhadapan dengan surfer muda berbakat Darmaputra Tonjo di perempat final 1, dimana pertarungan ini akan menjadi pertarungan sengit karena seperti yang kita ketahui Tonjo menjadi headline di kalangan surfing internasional saat kontes Oakley World Pro Junior 2011 tahun lalu, dimana sebagai pemegang wildcard ia menumbangkan surfer junior no. 2 dunia Nat Young dan setelahnya ia menaklukkan surfer junior no 1 dunia, Jack Freestone.

Satu lagi pertarungan terbesar hari ini yaitu saat Heat 8 babak 3, dimana para goofyfooter terbaik Bali yaitu Garut Widiarta, Made “Bol” Adi Putra, dan Raditya Rondi dan salah satu goofyfooter terbaik dari Jawa Barat, Cimaja, Asep Pahruroji  semuanya bertarung dalam satu heat. “Ini heat yang gila,” kata Widiarta setelah memenangkan heat. “Saya seperti tidak percaya saat melihat heat draw-nya. Kita, surfer-surfer Bali berasal dari keluarga yang sama dan Asep dari Cimaja surfing di Cimaja setiap harinya, dimana spot kanannya hampir serupa seperti Canggu. Tentunya saya ngga nyangka bisa menang. Setelah ini, saya akan bertarung melawan Mus (Mustofa Jeksen) di perempat final. Kembali, saya akan melawan goofyfooter yang lain.  Prestasi saya tahun lalu sungguh kurang bagus, jadi saya harap tahun ini keberuntungan ada di pihak saya untuk bisa masuk ke babak final, dan sampai menang.”
