High Performance Action and
Close Calls on Day 3 of the Quiksilver Open West Java 2012
16 June 2012,
Cimaja-West Java: Bright sunshine, perfectly pumping waves, and the best
surfers in South East Asia putting it all on the line in the race to the final
on Day 3 of the Quiksilver Open West Java; it was a day of close calls, upsets,
and high scoring maneuvers that had the fans on the beach screaming and
cheering in every heat of Rounds 3 and 4.
Top ranked Lee Wilson went to work in the perfectly formed
glassy waves and put on an exciting performance start off the day, winning his
heat. Next up was Marlon Gerber,
who only took three waves during his 20 minutes but one was an almost perfect 9-point
wave (out of a possible 10).
Heat 3 of Round 3 was by far the most exciting heat of the
day, as the barrel machine at Cimaja turned on for Quiksilver’s Dede Suryana
and his 15 year old protégé Deden Sutendi. Both surfers pulled into multiple barrels and came out
slashing and turning, with Suryana nabbing a perfect 10-point wave (to add to
his 8.5) to get the day’s highest single wave score as well the day’s highest
heat score of 19 points out of 20.
Young Deden surfed like a champion as well, slotting into barrels and
mimicking Suryana’s powerful turns.
After the heat Suryana was grinning, saying “It was like
good team work out there wasn’t it? Deden and I were getting so many good waves
and keeping the lineup busy. For
sure our local knowledge helped us with wave selection, as its not always easy
to know which of the waves will give you an open barrel. It was great fun being out there with
Deden, and I love it when Cimaja turns on like this!”
By the time Round 4 rolled around, the wind had come up and
was slightly onshore, making it a bit more of a challenge for especially the
goofyfooters. In the man-on-man
round (only two surfers competing), heat times were extended to 25 minutes, but
conditions remained good to very good til the completion of the round.
In Round 4 action, Lee Wilson defeated Agus Frimanto in a
blow for blow battle; Dede Suryana continued his stellar performance by racking
up another set of high scores, a 9.0 and an 8.4 to take down Wayan Susiana, and
local Asep Pahruroji advancing over Rahtu Suargita. Pepen Hendrik narrowly got the better of Tipi Jabrik, Made
Widiarta fell to Marlon Gerber, Putra Hermawan bested Soma Warsoma, and Putu
Anggara advanced over local Sandi Selamet.
The final heat of Round 4 topped off the long list of highlights
of the day, with Bali’s Mustofa Jeksen just saving his lead in the dying
moments against a charging young Deden Sutendi. “That was a close one,” said Jeksen during his post heat
interview. “After the first 15
minutes I only had a couple of scores in the 5 and 6 range, and I knew from
watching Deden earlier that wasn’t enough, so I was in a dangerous
position. I kept trying to get a
really good wave and go hard but I fell a few times, so was not comfortable at
all. Then with I think only around
a minute left I scored that 8, and felt like I could hold the lead and win. I felt pretty lucky. Deden has a great future as a pro
surfer for sure, and even now surfs beyond his years.”
MC Lorca Lueras was also impressed, saying “Deden was behind
but then kept getting the scores he needed right up until the end, giving Mus a
great battle. It was a super
finish to a day full of the best surfing action you could ever hope to be
watching here in South East Asia.”
The action promises to be riveting tomorrow as it will be
the final day where the top surfers in Asia compete for their share of the Rp
70 million ($7,500 USD) in prize money and valuable Coca-Cola ISC and ASC
championship points.
The quarterfinalists of the Men’s Open Division were told to
be standing by on the beach for another 7 am start. The quarterfinal man-on-man lineup is:
Quarterfinal 1:
Lee Wilson vs Dede Suryana
Quarterfinal 2:
Asep Pahruroji vs Pepen Hendrik
Quarterfinal 3:
Marlon Gerber vs Putra Hermawan
Quarterfinal 4:
Putu Anggara vs Mustofa Jeksen
The finals of the Women’s Division, Master’s Division, and
Longboard Division will be run just after the 2nd Men’s semifinal.

16 juni 2012, Cimaja-Jawa Barat:
ketiga Quiksilver Open West Java.
Peselancar peringkat atas Lee Wilson berhasil
Dede Suryana.
Setelah heat selesai Suryana tersenyum,
heat diperpanjang menjadi 25 menit, tetapi keadaan tetap bagus, bahkan
bertambah baik sampai akhir penyelesaian round.
Suargita. Pepen Hendrik mengalahkan Tipi Jabrik, Made Widiarta dikalahkan oleh
berpotensi Deden Sutendi. “beda skornya tipis,” ucap Jeksen saat
wawancaranya setelah menyelesaikan heat.
Berikut daftar
dari para finalis untuk perempat final :
Perempat final 1: Lee Wilson vs Dede Suryana
Perempat final 2: Asep Pahruroji vs Pepen Hendrik
Perempat final 3: Marlon Gerber vs Putra Hermawan
