Masters Division Action a Highlight on Day Two of the Quiksilver Open West Java 2012

15 June 2012, Cimaja-West Java: The Master’s Division (over 35 years of age) competitors saw action today on Day Two of the Quiksilver Open West Java at Cimaja Beach today, as the expected swell increase had 4-5 foot sets exploding onto the cobblestone break, giving the senior surfers plenty of great waves to tear into.

The first round of four heats got started at just after 8:00 am, with 16 surfers from Indonesia, Thailand, and the USA battling it out in the glassy and near perfect righthanders.  Bali’s Ketut Juliarta and local brothers Sujari and Edin (Dede Suryana’s older brothers) were standouts, and when the afternoon’s semifinal sessions were completed, they along with Uluwatu legend Made Lapur filled the four finalist positions.  The Master’s finals will be run along with all the finals on Sunday the 17th of June.

Round Two of the Men’s Open competition was also completed today, with some expectations being fulfilled and some surprising upsets as well.

Heat One saw 2011 Coca-Cola ISC champ Marlon Gerber getting a slow start in the heat, going a bit too hard and uncharacteristically falling on his fist few waves, but about mid midway through the heat under pressure from Angga Mardiana, he found his rhythm and scored a 7 point wave to jump into the lead and maintain it to win the heat.  “I hadn’t surfed a 2nd round heat in well over a year,” said Gerber,  “So it maybe I did feel a bit of pressure I guess.  The waves were really fun though, and I’m stoked I made it through that one because I want to keep surfing!”

Angga Mardiana and fellow Lembongan surfer Agus Frimanto put on great displays of competitive surfing today in their heats, living up to the expectations that Judge Sachan voiced yesterday. Mardiana finished his heat just less than one point away from Gerber’s total, 10.65 to 11.60, and Frimanto bested Cimaja locals Andre Julian and Suparman, as well as Ketut Juliarta to rack up the day’s highest combined heat score of 13.25 out of a possible 20 points.

They will go on to try their luck against the top seeded surfers tomorrow in Round 3, with Ardiana in Heat 1 against two time Coca-Cola ISC champion Lee Wilson, Soma Warsoma, and Agus Setiawan, and Frimanto taking on Darmaputra Tonyo, Putu Anggara, and Dedi Santoso.

A few of the local Cimaja surfers fared well today including Dede Suryana’s young protégé Deden Sutendi, along with Asep Pahruroji, Sujari, and Ruslandi.  They will get their chance against Asia’s best surfers tomorrow, and we wish them lots of luck.
The competition will resume tomorrow morning at 7:00 am with Round 3 and Round 4 of the Open Division.

As part of the “Keepin’ It Green” program of the Coca-Cola ISC Tour, Quiksilver along with the ROLE Foundation, GUS, and the Cimaja locals have created a beach cleanup program where Quiksilver’s Tony Sruntul and ROLE’s Curtis Lowe are instructing local groups of school children each day on environmental issues such as collecting and separating trash, and then giving away prizes to encourage them to continue.

Yesterday was the first day of the program and the kids were first divided into teams of two and given two separate bags, one for organic waste and the other for plastic.  At the end of the 1-hour collection period, the kids had amassed a trash pile weighing in at 125 kilograms!

Today it was some kids from the Madrassa Secondary School who showed up at the beach and collected 70 kilograms.  Each day it will get harder and harder to find the trash so the numbers will go down, and at the end of the Quiksilver Open West Java Cimaja Beach will be spotless!

“These school kids were so stoked to be coming here and after their efforts seeing a clean beach,” said Curtis Lowe.  “I know that Quiksilver and Coca-Cola have been coming here for a few years now and doing cleanups each time, and from what I can see the kids are really getting it now, so those past efforts are clearly having a positive impact.”

Along with prizes given for the biggest bags of trash, all the kids received an instructional cartoon booklet especially designed by the Bali-based GUS Foundation to teach kids about their health and the environment.

It promises to be another epic day action as the top surfers in Asia compete in Rounds 3 and 4 tomorrow, so please follow along with us here at the Quiksilver Open West Java 2012 on-line at www.isctour.com/events/quikwestjava and on Facebook at both ISC and Quiksilver Indonesia, and there will be all the up-to-the-minute heat scores and results during the day, then press releases, photos, and video highlights after the day’s competition has ended.
