Bali one of world’s top MICE destinations

Travel safe in Bali - Travel insurance from Worldnomads.com

Bali one of world’s top MICE destinations

by Wasti Atmodjo on 2012-11-28
The Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry has stated that the world has acknowledged Bali as one of the top destinations for meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE).

Firmansyah Rahim, the ministry’s director general of tourism destination development, said that Bali, especially the Nusa Dua area, was already equipped with international standard MICE facilities.

Nusa Dua, managed by Bali Tourism Development Corporation (BTDC), has dozens of four and five star hotels and resorts, convention centers, exhibition halls, a hospital and other supporting facilities.

PT Bali Tourism Development Corporation (BTDC), guaranteed that the thousands of available bedrooms and meeting rooms in the resort compound would be sufficient to accommodate the guests of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in November 2013.

In 2013, PT BTDC targets having as many as 20 hotels, a museum, the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center (BNDCC), and a golf course in the 300-hectare Nusa Dua resort area.

A total of 3,643 rooms, comprising 3,512 hotel rooms and 131 villas, are available in the compound. The most comprehensive meeting room facilities at hotels in Nusa Dua are the Grand Hyatt (29), The Westin Resort (28) and BNDCC (41).

The largest meeting room is capable of hosting 4,400 people.

The quiet and spacious location had enabled Nusa Dua to accommodate world-class conferences and meetings attended by thousands of participants, Rahim said.

Bali will utilize its international-standard conference facilities in the Nusa Dua area when it hosts the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in November 2013. The conference facilities will also play host to several other world-class conferences, including the Global Youth Forum in December.

Ida Bagus Kade Subhiksu, head of Bali Tourism Office, told Bali Daily recently that the island hosted hundreds of meetings and conferences every year, with around 88 percent of the events on an international scale.

Data from the Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry showed that Bali hosted 168 international and domestic meetings, conferences, incentives and exhibitions in 2011, contributing 1.91 percent of total foreign visitor arrivals — around 2.9 million — to the country.

Meanwhile, domestic visitors involved in MICE activities contributed 4.1 percent of the total domestic arrivals — 5.67 million — in 2012.

MICE events, he said, would have a significant economic impact on the island’s tourist industry.

MICE events involve the use of hotels, exhibition rooms, conference halls, professional organizers, florists, catering services and transportation services, among others.

“They [the events] will create crucial job opportunities and boost the island’s economy,” Subhiksu added

Rahim continued that Bali was already designated as Indonesia’s major MICE destination.

“The ministry has targeted drawing eight million foreign tourist arrivals in 2012, hopefully many of them will come to Bali for MICE activities,” added Rahim.

Improvements to the island’s infrastructure, such as its airport and road facilities, are now ongoing to help ease traffic congestion and welcome visitors at the renovated airport.

Bali’s MICE facilities had to be able to compete globally. “Afterwards, we have to optimize our marketing.

The potential is huge. Bali is known as a successful host for various important international conferences, including the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the ASEAN Summit.

The best place to have sex in Bali

Travel safe in Bali - Travel insurance from Worldnomads.com

The best place to have sex in Bali is the Bali Mouintain Retreat in Tabanan. Why do I say that? Because I have had sex there many times. The BMR is situated up a mountain surrounded by ricefields and jungle. Your girl will love it straight away and so will you. The rooms are great and cool, clean mountain air means even a first date will want to snuggle up. All you've got to do is play your cards right and wait for things to heat up!

My favourite room is Rm #3. I've had great success in that room so for me it my lucky charm. Give it a go.

Raditya Rondi Wins Men’s Open and Yasnyiar Gea Takes Women’s Win at 2012 Taiwan Open of Surfing

19 November 2012, Jinzun Harbor-Taitung County: In an exciting climax to a spectacular three days of competitive surfing at the 2012 Taiwan Open of Surfing Taitung County yesterday, Indonesia’s Raditya Rondi posted his second consecutive ASC Men’s Open victory of the 2012-2013 tour season by besting Australian Dean Brady in a riving 23 minute man-on-man final, winning the largest single division prize money prize of $75,000 NTD ($2,500 USD) so far on the ASC tour and in the biggest surfing competition every held in Taiwan.

“I’m so happy to have won this event today,” said Rondi after hearing that Brady’s final wave score wasn’t enough to take the victory away from him.  “Thanks to my sponsor Billabong for sending me here and thanks to the Taitung government and the ASC for putting on such a great surf contest.  I’ve had such a great time here, surfing and meeting all the local people, and eating great food.  Thanks for all of this!”

Rondi, who was recently crowned the 2012 Indonesian Surfing Championship Men’s Open Champion and already has two Asian Surfing Championship Men’s Open titles to boast about, was up against a formidable opponent in Dean Brady, who was one of Australia’s top ranked Pro Junior surfers and is now an internationally known free surfer.
“I was really lucky to get a couple of good waves at the beginning of the heat to take the lead,” explained Rondi.  “I had seen Brady take out Marlon and then Tipi in the previous heats, and even though he is a big guy he can really surf small waves super good, so I knew it wouldn’t be easy to win.  I was getting nervous in the middle of the heat because there weren’t many good waves coming through, then near the end I got a good wave of 6.5 points so I started to feel more relaxed.  But then just a minute from the end Brady got that one wave and smashed it….so coming in we both didn’t know if it was enough to beat me or not, so I was really nervous again!”

Both competitors and the spectators waited in anticipation for the scores to come down from the judges tower, the ASC Director Tipi Jabrik announced that Brady’s score came up just 1 point short, as he needed a 7.2 point score but earned only a 6.2.
“That was great fun, win or lose.  I was happy to be in the final for sure.” Said Brady.    “Raditya was surfing so well all through the whole event, he certainly deserved to win.  I fell just short, but if I hadn’t got that last wave it would have been way short, so I feel better about that. On the beach before the start we both high fived and I gave him a hug and we both agreed to just go out there and have fun, and we did that. I think we gave the guys on the beach a good show too, and it was a pretty great way to end a super fun three days here in Taiwan.”

In the Women’s Open Division it was 5-time Indonesian Women’s champion and 2-time Asian Women’s champion Yasnyiar “Bonne” Gea (IND) who took out her second consecutive event win of the year, just edging past Taiwan’s Jessie Hong in the final minute.  “I’m so lucky to have gotten that last wave,” said Gea.  “Jessie was leading from the start and we all were chasing her, and I just couldn’t get another good wave until the very end.  I thought I should get a good score because I got lots of turns in, and was so happy when it came it at just enough.”  In her final point tally she bested Hong by a single point.

The Longboard Final was a spectacular display of both progressive and traditional longboard surfing, with world champion Taylor Jenson (USA), young Aussie phenom Nic Jones (AUS), 2-time Indonesian and Asian champ Arip “Mencos” Nurhidayat, and ASP number one ranked Georgia Young showing the Taiwanese crowd on the beach everything from Hang 5’s to Hang 10’s, floaters, deep gouging cutbacks and re-entries, aerials, and maneuvers that haven’t even been named yet, to draw massive rounds of applause and cheers after every wave.  Jenson won the final matchup, scoring the event’s highest single wave score of 8.9 point (out of a possible 10) on his final wave to the delight of the crowd.

In the Junior “Grommet” Division final (16 years of age and under), Australia’s Harry Bryant wowed the crowd with his impressive ‘go for it’ style, taking first place over Rory MacDonald (TWN), Taitung local Wang Zhen Ming “Monkey”, and Wolf Wertheimer (USA).  “I wish the waves had been a bit better for me in the final” said Harry.  “I really wanted to do some big airs and try a bunch of different things, but I just couldn’t get the right waves.  But it was so great just to be here, I’m so stoked about the place, the people, the food and everything!”

In Noserider Pro Invitational final, the remaining 5 noseriding specialists from the original 16 that started the competition on Friday (a mix of competitors from Australia, Indonesia, Taiwan and the USA) paddled out to see who could wrap their toes over the nose of their boards the longest and most often and come home with the big winner’s check.  It was not a big surprise that Taylor Jenson took out the final, as he had won every heat since the first day, and was a star attraction on the beach as well as in the water, as many of the Taiwanese surfers are avid longboarders.   When asked about his experience so far, Jenson replied, “This is my first time to the Taitung area, so I didn’t know what to expect with the whole event. I was surprised at how many people there were here and how big the set up was.  It seems like longboarding is pretty popular here too, probably because the waves can be a bit slow and a touch flat, which lends itself well to longboarding.  Plus most people learn on longboards and surfing is relatively new here.  I really had fun out here and I’m stoked to be here.

At the awards presentation held the evening after the day’s finals had been concluded, Taitung governor Jason Huang thanked the competitors, the judging panel, the ASC, and the event organizers for their support and hard work at making the event such a great success, and promised to continue to support the growth of surfing in Taiwan.  He was very impressed by the surfing he witnessed, saying, “Being able to watch you perform, right here in Taitung, is a wonderful experience, for me and all the local people.  I think they have only ever seen anything like this on You Tube or TV or on the internet.  So this is a very meaningful event and I thank you for your participation and your support in making this event a big success.  Next year we will be doing it again and I hope to see you here,” which drew a big round of applause.

ASC Director Tipi Jabrik in his speech complemented Governer Huang saying, “This place is really special, so natural, the water so clear. That’s the reason people want to come here to surf.  And another thing that is really special.  Wherever you go for a surfing competition, you will never see the governor going to the contest site.  You should feel really honored to have the governor coming and checking if everything is ok.  It’s a great sign that the government really does care about surfing, so we’re looking forward for great things in Taiwan’s surfing future.”

The 2012 Taiwan Open of Surfing was an Ultima grade Asian Surfing Championship sanctioned surfing competition, sponsored by the Taitung County government, with total prize money of the NTD 600,000 (USD $20,000) in prize money across the Men’s Open, Women’s, Open, Longboard Open, Juniors, and Noserider Pro Invitational divisions, which is the biggest prize purse ever offered in a surfing event in Taiwan.

About the Asian Surfing Championships
The Asian Surfing Championships began in 2011 with the mission of growing the sport of surfing in South East Asia from the grassroots level by assisting each country in organizing professional surfing events that will develop the skills of their surfers in healthy competition as well as to draw attention to their area for the progression of surfing locally, nationally, and throughout the SEA area.

Longboards, Shortboards, Women and Rain on Day 2 of Taiwan Open of Surfing

Travel safe in Bali - Travel insurance from Worldnomads.com

Longboards, Shortboards, Women and Rain on Day 2 of Taiwan Open of Surfing

17 November 2012, Jinzun Harbor-Taitung County: After an excellent day of weather yesterday, rain was the order of the day as all but the Junior division contestants saw action on Day Two of the 2012 Taiwan Open of Surfing, taking place at Jinzun Harbor in Taitung County, Taiwan.

Despite the inconvenience of the rain for the organizers and the spectators, the wave conditions continued to be excellent for the contestants for the majority of the day, with solid 3-4 foot waves rolling in with regularity.

At just after 7 am, with a rising tide conditions and glassy wave faces, the contest directors elected to start off the day by sending out the 9 remaining Noserider Pro Invitational contestants to decide their 5 man final.  Despite snapping his board near the end of his heat, Nic Jones (AUS) posted the highest single wave score of a 7.1 and combined two wave score of 13.4 to lead the field.  He was followed by Taylor Jenson (USA) with 11.9 points and Rosie Locke (AUS) who also with 11.9 points, then Cheng Tung-Ming (TWN) with 8.1 and Chou Chong Hong (TWN) with 7.8 to round out the final 5.

When asked how he felt being one of the two locals making it into the final, Cheng Tung-Ming replied, “I felt like it was going to be a difficult heat because everyone is so talented, so I just tried as best I could to choose the right waves that would give me the most scoring potential. I am so happy to surf against such great surfers, and I hope it helps me to progress my surfing. I am really happy to represent Taiwan in the final.”

Tung-Ming, who is 37 years old, lives in the Kenting area, which is about a 3 hour drive from Jinzun Harbor and has been surfing now for over 20 years.

In the highly competitive Longboard Division, Indonesia’s Arip “Mencos” Nurhidayat won the first heat of their quarterfinals by posting a set of solid scores for his often unique and mostly unpredictable surfing style, and is very focused on ending up in the top spot of the podium tomorrow. “I was really disappointed yesterday at not getting through my heat in the noseriding division,” said Arip.  “So now my goal is to win the longboard division, and that’s what I have to do.  There are some really good surfers here, but I’m not going to think about that, I’m just going to have to surf really good so I can win.”  Arip hails from the small town of Batu Karas in West Java, known as the Malibu of Java, and is the current Indonesian (ISC) and Asian (ASC) longboard champion.

Possibly the most interesting matchup occurred today in the Men’s Open division man on man Round 4, where in Heat 8 it was 12-year-old Rory MacDonald (TWN) who was sent out to take on world renown free surfer Dean Brady (AUS).  After his heat, Rory was asked for his reaction regarding the matchup. “I didn’t care,” he said smiling.  “I just wanted to surf and get some good waves.  I really don’t care who is out there because I’m looking at the waves and trying to find the best ones.  That’s what’s important to me.”
Quarterfinal matchups tomorrow for the Men’s Open are:  Raditya Rondi (INA) taking on Nic Jones (AUS), Dede Suryana (INA) vs (Rahtu Suargita (INA), Marlon Gerber (INA) vs Dean Brady (AUS), and Taylor Jenson (USA) vs Tipi Jabrik (INA).

After the completion of Round 4 of the Men’s Open, as the wind and the rain began to blow in earnest, the four heats of the Women’s Division were run in rather challenging conditions.  Indonesia’s 5 –time Women’s champion Yasnyiar “Bonne” Gea posted the sessions highest single wave score of 7.5 in the opening heat, and ended up also with the highest combined heat score of 13.00 to lead the field into the semifinals. “Yes it was hard out there,” she said.  “Finding a good wave was the most challenging, one that I could turn on without falling down!  Then there was a lot of paddling in between.  But I’m so glad to make it through and into the semi’s.”

Tomorrow will see the conclusion of the Taiwan Open of Surfing, where the winners will be awarded their share of the NTD 600,000 (USD $20,000) in prize money up for grabs across the Men’s, Women’s, Longboard and Noserider Pro Invitational divisions, which is the biggest prize purse ever offered in a surfing event in Taiwan.

The Taiwan Open of Surfing is an Asian Surfing Championship sanctioned Ultima event.

Excellent Conditions and Exciting Action on Day One of the Taiwan Open of Surfing

16 November 2012, Jinzun Harbor-Taitung County:  It was an full and exciting day of surfing action today in excellent wave and weather conditions to open the 2012 Taiwan Open of Surfing taking place at Jinzun Harbor in Taitung County, Taiwan.

The 18 Noserider Pro Invitational contestants from Australia, Indonesia, Taiwan, and the USA were first to hit the water this morning at just after 7:00 a.m. Current World Longboarding Champion Taylor Jenson from the USA was in the first of the three six man heats and wasted no time in showing the fans exactly what it takes to be a world champion.  At the conclusion of the heats, he had posted the highest single wave score of 7.3 points (out of a possible 10 points) and the highest combined heat score of 13.3 (out of a possible 20 points) to advance into the semifinals.

“I had fun out there,” said Taylor, who hails from San Diego but is currently living in Australia.  “Taiwan is such a beautiful place and it’s great to be here.  I’m feeling pretty good about getting some scores in that first heat, because in this morning’s conditions it was a bit difficult for noseriding.  Be great if the conditions get better for the semifinals, so looking forward to that.” Jenson is also competing in the Longboard and Men's Open divisions.

Also advancing into the Noseriding semifinals are Australian’s Nic Jones and Rosie Locke, and Taiwanese surfers Tung-Ming Chen, Cheng Chung Hua, Cheng-Hsien Lin, Jen Hsuan Huang, Chong Hong Chiou, Wu Jia Jiz, and Paul Teng.

Next up were the 32 Longboard Division competitors who were treated to solid 3-4 foot glassy waves and bright sunshine for their first round of 8 heats.  Australia’s Nic Jones (Sunshine Coast), despite having been out of action for the last two days due to stomach flu, showed no signs of it affecting his surfing, easily winning his first heat.

“The waves were pretty fun,” said Jones.  “I seemed to be in the right spot at the right time, so the heat went well for me.  I still feel pretty drained of energy after being sick, but hopefully it’s all behind me now.  I was here in Taiwan last month for on a surf trip, and I’m happy to be back here again.”

In the Men’s Open Division two rounds were run today, with a total of 32 competitors from Australia, Indonesia, Japan, Taiwan, and the USA battling it out in hopes getting closer to the big prize pot that will be handed out on Sunday afternoon.  Winning 5 of the 8 second round heats were surfers from Indonesia, with current 2012 Asian Surfing Champion Raditya Rondi from Bali leading them off.

“I was a bit nervous out there at first,” said Rondi.  “I fell on my first two waves and then it took some time to get my confidence back.  But then I got a couple of scores that got me through, so I’m happy I get another chance to surf tomorrow.  Hopefully I can do a lot better in the man-on-man heats tomorrow.”

Also winning their heats were fellow Indonesians Dede Suryana, Rahtu Suargita, Marlon Gerber, and Tipi Jabrik.

At the conclusion of the day, Head Judge Keenan Roxburgh from Australia (who is sharing the head judging duties with Trevor Brady, both ASP certified judges) said, “We really liked what we saw out there today on the first day of comp.  Sometimes the waves limited the scoring potential of the lower ranked and less experienced surfers, but we had to keep our scale consistent across all levels and our panel did a great job at that today.  Tomorrow should see bigger scores as the better surfers start to push one another into more aggressive and difficult maneuvers.”

Tomorrow will have all divisions in action during another full day of surfing competition at Jinzun Harbor, with the semifinals of the Noserider Pro, the quarterfinals of the Longboard Open, round 3 of the Men’s Open, as well as the Women’s Open and the Junior divisions.  The swell is expected to increase and provide both the competitors and the spectators with more exciting surfing at Taiwan’s biggest ever surfing competition.

The Taiwan Open of Surfing will run from 16-18 November at Jinzun Harbor in Taitung County Taiwan, an Asian Surfing Championship sanctioned Ultima event with the NTD 600,000 (USD $20,000) in prize money up for grabs across the Men’s, Women’s, Longboard and Noserider Pro Invitational divisions, the biggest prize purse ever offered in a surfing event in Taiwan.
