6-Star ASC Rip Curl Pro Terengganu is Ready for Asia’s Best Surfers – Action Begins Tomorrow

29 November 2012, Terengganu-Malaysia:  After several days of preparation the contest venue of Batu Buruk Beach in Terengganu is ready to host the first ever 6-star Asian Surfing Championship surfing competition in Malaysia, the Rip Curl Pro Terengganu, which will kick off tomorrow November 30 at approximately 10 am.

In conjunction with the government of Terengganu, Rip Curl Malaysia is proud to be the first surf brand in Malaysia to sponsor a 6-star rated ASC surfing competition with total prize money of 36,500 MYR (over $12,000 USD) across five surfing divisions; Men’s, Women’s, Longboard, Masters, and Bodyboard, plus a Skateboard Slalom Race and various specialty awards such as “Best Malaysian Surfer” and “Best Wipeout” to name a few.  In addition there will also be 22,500 MYR ($7,500 USD) worth of Rip Curl products given out to the finalists.

With big prize money and valuable ASC championship points on offer, the Rip Curl Pro Terengganu has drawn the Asian region’s best professional surfers from Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan, and the Maldives, as well as surfers from Japan, Singapore, and France.

Bali’s Mega Semadhi arrived last night and wasted no time in getting out to test the waters this morning.  “It was small but fun out there,” said Semadhi, who in September won the last event of the 2012 ASC season in Phuket, Thailand. “It’s my first time to come to Malaysia and I’m looking forward to doing well in the competition.  I’m hoping the waves get a bit bigger but even if it stays like this it will be ok, as I enjoy surfing in anything.  I’m confidant I can do well here and hoping I can win this event.”

Dede Suryana from West Java, Indonesia was the winner of the Open Division at last year’s ASC sanctioned event held here in Terengganu, and he is happy to be back to defend his title.  “It’s going to be pretty competitive this year, with more guys from Indo here, guys from Thailand and from the Maldives too,” said Suryana.  “Plus the locals have improved a lot so it’s not going to be easy. Hopefully I can win it again.”

The event will kick off tomorrow morning at around 9:30 after allowing for any last minute registrations, and according to Contest Director Bryan Ng it may be the Longboard or Bodyboard Divisions that will be first out, depending of course upon the morning’s conditions.

The swell is forecast to increase slightly and remain fairly constant at 2-3 feet (.5 to 1.0 meter) through the weekend, with favorable winds and moderate weather conditions, setting up for a fun weekend of surfing and hanging out on one of Malaysia’s cleanest and whitest stretches of beachbreak.

The Rip Curl Pro Terengganu 2012 is sponsored and supported by the State Government of Terengganu, Rip Curl Malaysia, EC Extreme, the Ministry of Tourism Terengganu Office, and Tourism Malaysia, and co-sponsored by Fanta, Nestle Drumstick and Sunplay with Suria FM as media partner.

About the Asian Surfing Championships

The Asian Surfing Championships began in 2011 with the mission of growing the sport of surfing in South East Asia from the grassroots level by assisting each country in organizing professional surfing events that will develop the skills of their surfers in healthy competition as well as to draw attention to their area for the progression of surfing locally, nationally, and throughout the SEA area.

Organized surfing competitions have historically been the best medium for the development of surfers and for the sport of surfing, where learning how to compete fairly and to being disciplined in training and competition are key skills needed not only for surfing but also for life.

The ASC works with the local, national and multinational event sponsors and organizers to maximize the results of these competitive surfing events towards accomplishing the goals of sharing the sport of surfing and bringing positive economic, social, and environmental benefits to the people in these South East Asian countries.  See more at http://www.asiansurfingtour.com
