Bali seaweed farmers being swept aside by rampant corporate development

Along the coastlineof Bali where coral reefs can be found, the local Balinese practice of seaweed farming continues. This hands on labour intensive industry provides and income to poor Balinese families who have not been able to carve a chunk out of the tourist industry. Now in places such as Geger Beach in Nusa Dua even this small cottage industry is being swept aside by the mighty broom of corporate tourism.

As the Beat Magazine states, The situation is made particularly ironic by the fact that that Indonesia will, for the first time, host the 21st International Seaweed Symposium in 2013, which will be attended by participants from roughly 60 countries, who will discuss the latest research and industry conditions in the seaweed business world.
