Bali police shoot and kill robber

Police in Bali had put an end to a violent gang of robbers, killing one member in the process. Over the last few months the amount of violent home invasions and robberies has skyrocketed, with seemingly news robberies happening every week. Bali police had dealt this latest crime wave a serious blow by capturing 3 members of a robbery gang and killing a forth.

One aspect about living in 'friendly relaxed Bali' is that once in a while you'll read a nasty story in the newspaper about some other expat, usually female, who has been brutally attacked in their own home. This follows from the Indonesian style of burglaries. In western countries most burglaries happen in the afternoon, due to the fact that afternoons are quiet and most people are at work. Here in Bali streets are busy during afternoons, meaning that burglars have no easy guaranteed escape route. Consequently burglars prefer to come at night. Only problem with this strategy is they face the very real prospect of coming face to face with the person who lives in the house. Solution....bring a machette. For sure these guys aren't the smartest people in the world and this leads to many ugly incidents. As mentioned in publications such as the Beat Mag, Jakarta Post and Bali Times, the assortment of break-ins, attacks and robberies have spiked recently.

Many expatriot women who live alone get a dog to act as a warning system. Robbers know women may not fight back, but still will use deadly violence if they think their indentity. If you find yourself confronted by burglars in Bali the best strategy is to either escape yourself of lock yourself in a room. You do not want to block the escape route of a burglar. Better to make a lot of noise.

This latest news is a great thing for foreign tourists and expats in Bali.
