Geologists have predicted the mud volcano in Sidoarjo East Java could keep erupting for 100 years. After extensive scientific studies which including modelling of mud flows, the predictions were the underground volcano, named Lusi, had a 10% chance of erupting for over 100 years.
If you've followed this news item from the beginning you'll know that the whole saga kicked off in May 2006 when a gas company drilled into an underground reservoir of hot water without using a drill casing. When the pressure forced the super-hot water upwards it came into contact with layer of mud churning that up and forcing it out of the drill hole. This collossal screw up cost 13,000 families their homes and livelihoods. Whole villages, ricefields, schools, shops, roads etc have been completely buried in meters of boiling mud. Here's more from the BBC.
