Hooray no taxing personal items in arrival in Bali

This year has started off well with someone in the Indonesian government coming to his senses and deciding not to enforce the latest Customs directive of charging Bali visitors a tax on personal items.

The new law was announced in early December and stated that all passengers arriving in Indonesia will be allowed a $250 dollar limit on personal items, the excess being charged a 20% duty. The tourism industry is a $4 billion a year earner. A great way to kill off that industry is to harass visitors by charging them duty on personal items such as jewelry, cameras, laptops and iPhones. Imagine a newlywed couple, he sporting his new laptop and her the diamond wedding ring she has just received. If the laptop cost $1,000 and the ring $5,000 those 2 people are $5,500 over the limit and would be liable for a fine of $1,100….thanks for choosing Bali for your honeymoon!
