Indonesia struggling with pornography issue

The 21st century and communication technology mean access to all kinds of information is easy for almost everyone. Balinese farmers who formerly would be ploughing fields and learning gamelan can now contact and chat with models in Jakarta on their smart phone. High school kids in Jakarta have access to all kinds of adults information,as do kids and adults all over Indonesia who visit internet cafes. For a largely Muslim country, and especially one that run by anal-retentive little men who are scared of everything from the outside world, this presents a huge problem.

Indonesia has been working with ISP's to block pornography (a very difficult task unless you have a team of people online 24/7 checking every site accessed by everybody) and also working with Blackberry to block adult content.

One of the highest profile cases of anti-pornography is the prosecution / persecution of Ariel 'Peterporn' (Nazriel Irham) who did the unforgiveable when he video taped himself with his girlfriend. For this unpardonable sin Ariel is faced with a 5 year prison sentence and Rp 250 million fine.

The funny side of all this is that a lot of Indonesians are big fans of pornography. Just visit a local internet cafe and watch people pointing anf giggling. Same with the widespread availability of DVDs. The way the govenment is trying to criminalize person behaviour smacks of fear of their part and a failure to understand modern life and also how processes work.

Ariel Peterporn's verdict will be on Tuesday February 1st 2011.
